CALIFORNIA CHROME SHIPPED TO KENTUCKYBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

His usual self in his Barn 2 stall at Gulfstream Park the morning of Jan. 29, two-time Horse of the

Year California Chrome awaited a scheduled trip to Taylor Made Farm, where he will begin his stallion career.

At 6:45 a.m. ET Sunday, California Chrome's groom Raul Rodriguez said the original plan to ship out around 9 a.m. to Taylor Made in Nicholasville, Ky. was still in place. Moments earlier on a cool, drizzly morning, California Chrome playfully let Rodriguez know he was around with a playful fake bite as the groom was doing some work outside his stall.

On Jan. 28 California Chrome's final race ended with a ninth-place finish in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) won by Arrogate. The result marked the first time since a sixth-place run in the 2014 Pennsylvania Derby (G2) that the son of Lucky Pulpit finished off the board.

After the race trainer Art Sherman said California Chrome had some fluid in his right knee.

"We can see he's a little off in his knee—he has a little fluid, nothing major," Sherman said after the race Saturday. "Maybe he has a small chip in the lower capsule."

On Sunday Rodriguez said swelling in the knee was about the same or may have gone down some.

Sherman noted after the race that the horse's flight to Kentucky would be less than three hours, so if a chip needed to be removed or other treatment was needed, he would receive it there. The trainer said the injury is common in racing but not for California Chrome.

"It's a common injury, but he's been so sound throughout his life," Sherman said.

In an interview with America's Best Racing the same morning, Frank Taylor of Taylor Made stated that X-rays, evaluation, and any necessary treatment would be done at the farm. He also reiterated that the injury was likely minor and could be a chip, which may or may not require surgical removal.

One odd thing Sherman noticed before the race was when California Chrome ducked in before loading into

the gate—something the trainer said the champion had never done before. An NBC cameraman with a hand-held camera was walking alongside when California Chrome swerved away and had to be redirected before loading.

After he's given any needed treatment and time to adjust to his new surroundings, Taylor Made hopes California Chrome can begin stud duty around mid-February. He'll stand for $40,000.

California Chrome retires with a record of 16-4-1 from 27 starts and earnings of $14,752,650. He won a total of seven grade 1 races including the 2014 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands and Preakness Stakes, and the 2016 Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline while on a six-race win streak that year. BH

ALL IS WELL FOR ARROGATE DAY AFTER PEGASUSBy BloodHorse Staff

It was still dark and a misty rain had yet to begin falling the morning of Jan. 29 when Jimmy Barnes, assistant

to Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and trusted traveling partner to his best horses, arrived on the Gulfstream Park backstretch to check on their stable star.

Fresh off his commanding victory late the previous afternoon in the world's richest race, the inaugural $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1), Juddmonte Farms' Arrogate was waiting.

"I got here around 5:30. We didn't have to nudge him or wake him up. He was already up," Barnes said. "This is him. He recovers quickly. He's just a freak. He came out of the race in excellent shape. He cooled out quick last night. It was just an awesome race."

Arrogate ran his win streak to six races with his third consecutive grade 1 victory and second straight over California Chrome, the two-time Horse of the Year making his career finale. In his 4-year-old debut and just

his seventh lifetime start, Arrogate won by 4 3/4 lengths despite not being asked by Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith in the last of nine furlongs, finishing in 1:47.61.

"He's got such a huge stride and he relaxes and shuts down, and when you call on him he responds," Barnes said. "I kind of saw early that 'Chrome' really wasn't 'Chrome.' We had to get out of the one hole and get into position and he did that. Mike got him out there and got him where he needed to be. He was still sitting

behind horses but when Mike called upon him to move and get into the clear, he accelerated, got his way out of there, got to the lead, and kept on going. And Mike shut him down, too."

Arrogate walked the shed row Sunday before going back to his stall where he enthusiastically greeted the few visitors who stopped by to offer congratulations, take pictures, and feed him carrots. He boarded a Brook Ledge van at 8:45 a.m. headed to Palm Beach International Airport for a Tex Sutton flight that will take him back to California, where they are scheduled to land at 6:30 p.m. EST.

Also on the van with Arrogate were Santa Anita-based Imperative, winner of the Pegasus' companion race, the $400,000 Poseidon Handicap, and Semper Fortis, who finished seventh in the Pegasus.

"It's hard to tell but I imagine he knows how good he is. He acts like he does," Barnes said. "It was exciting, the world's largest purse. We want to be involved in that and we want to win that, so it was fun. It was a lot of fun. It was a great day."

With Baffert already on his way back to California, Barnes did not speculate on the immediate future for Arrogate. Returning to the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), hosted by Del Mar for the first time in November, is the year-end goal.

"I know the Breeders' Cup Classic is in the plans again this year but we just want to keep him healthy. That's the main thing," Barnes said. "I'm pretty down to earth and just stay close to the horse, make sure he stays healthy and sound and just move on to the next race, wherever that may be."

A late-developing son of Unbridled's Song who didn't debut until the spring of his sophomore year, Arrogate's rise to stardom follows in the footsteps of American Pharoah, his former stablemate that Baffert trained to the 2015 Triple Crown.

"Life had to go on without American Pharoah, and he steps up," Barnes said. "It's tough coming off of an American Pharoah-type year because these kinds of horses come around once in a lifetime. To get two, back-to-back, it's incredible. It's amazing." BH

PEGASUS CARD SETS RECORD HANDLE FOR GULFSTREAMBy Jim Freer and Barry Unterbrink

In a rousing pari-mutuel wagering success, Gulfstream Park registered all-sources handle of $40,217,924 on

its Jan. 28 Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) card, setting a handle record for the track (not counting days it hosted the Breeders' Cup World Championships).

The record handle was fueled by betting on the $12 million Pegasus World Cup won by Arrogate, which saw more than $11.1 million wagered. Gulfstream's previous non-Breeders' Cup record was $32,082,270 set April 2, when it had 14 races including the Florida Derby (G1).

The day's handle was more than twice the amount wagered on last year's Donn Handicap (G1) card—the race replaced this year by the Pegasus. The handle also was more than twice the amount wagered on the 2015 William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) day at Monmouth Park, when Triple Crown winner American Pharoah won the Haskell.

Highlights of Saturday's wagering included:• $11,114,341 on the 12th race (excluding multiple-race

bets)• $4,697,843 in win, place, and show pools in the

12th race• $2,023,813 on the late Pick 4, which paid $102.80

on the minimum 50-cent bet• $1,105,296 on the late Pick 5, which paid $342.60

on the minimum 50-cent bet• $469,172 on the Rainbow 6. It paid $3,145.34 on the

20-cent only bet, with a carryover in the jackpot wager

Attendance wasn't reported by the track, but the crowd appeared to be the largest in recent years, with the exception of several Florida Derby days. Besides the Pegasus, the afternoon included six others stakes races.

"We are extremely pleased with the inaugural running of the Pegasus World Cup," said Gulfstream general manager P.J. Campo. "From early morning until late afternoon, Gulfstream was electric.

"From the amenities, to our guests, to the blue carpet, to the incredible performance by Arrogate, the inaugural running of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational was incredible. We feel we introduced a number of new fans to the sport of Thoroughbred racing and the great entertainment and amenities at Gulfstream Park on Pegasus World Cup Day.

"We want to thank the fans who came out, the horsemen who support our program, and the incredible performances by our human and equine athletes."

While there has been some talk of moving the event to Santa Anita Park in 2017, The Stronach Group president Belinda Stronach said the goal will be to keep the event at Gulfstream next year. She was thrilled with the racing and the event, which included entertainment by Thomas Rhett and Trombone Shorty. Other celebrities attending included Vanessa Hudgens, Usher, Maria Menounos, Mike Ditka, and Gene Simmons.

"We've established such a good relationship with the South Florida community here," Stronach noted of efforts made by Gulfstream staff to establish sponsorships and relationships with local businesses and other partners. "This was our first one. We tried

some new things and we'll learn from it. Next year will be even better.

"There's been such a vibe in the Miami area. The whole city has been looking forward to this. We want to create an epic racing event and I think we saw a glimpse of that today."

The day featured a North American-record price for a general-admission ticket of $100. It was the first time Gulfstream has charged for general admission to the racing facility it opened in 2006.

SALES UPDATE

DIALED IN YEARLING TOPS F-T MIDLANTIC SALEBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

The only short yearling in the Fasig-Tipton Mid-lantic winter mixed sale sired by 2016 leading

freshman sire Dialed In was purchased by Machmer Hall Farm for $70,000 to top the one-day auction Jan. 29.

Consigned as Hip 174 by Bill Reightler, agent, the April 5, 2016 foal was bred in Pennsylvania by Donald L. Brown Jr. and was produced from the winning Lord Carson mare Her Lady Grace. A half sister to Halory Leigh, a hard-knocking multiple grade 2 winner at Churchill Downs who earned $672,872, Her Lady Grace has been represented by three winners from five foals of racing age.

Machmer Hall’s Carrie Brogden said she has "become a reluctant fan" of Dialed In, the grade 1-winning son of Mineshaft who stands at Darby Dan Farm near Lexington. The stallion stood for $7,500 when the current crop of yearlings was conceived and is listed at $15,000 for 2017.

"(Dialed In) is an overachiever and I like stallions who are overachievers," Brogden said. "He was bred to workman-like mares like this one. It’s not like he's a one-hit wonder. Every time you turn around he has another winner."

Brogden said the sale topper and two Mucho Macho Man colts purchased for $19,000 and $15,000 would be pinhooked into future sales. The horsewoman said the colt's purchase price was right in line with her valuation. "That was my last bid," she said. "I love shopping this sale. I bought two here last year and did really well."

Fasig-Tipton reported 141 horses were sold for gross receipts of $901,400, compared with the $878,100 total for 101 a year ago. This year’s average price of $6,428 represented a 23.9% decline from the $8,443 figure in 2015 and the median declined from $4,350 to $3,500.

From 236 head cataloged in the main and supplemental books, 37 were withdrawn and 58 buybacks represented a 29.1% RNA rate.

The 2016 edition of the annual auction conducted at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md., was the first since the sale was relocated on the calendar from December to January. The next Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale is the May 22-23 sale of 2-year-olds in training.

Second-highest price on the day was the $35,000 bid from Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, for Lady Chesley (Hip 85), an unraced 3-year-old daughter of Speightstown from the extended female family of champion Inside Information.

Consigned as a broodmare prospect by Northview Stallion Station (David Wade), as agent, the filly is a half sister to Danzig Moon, the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) runner-up who earned more than $300,000 and two-time Canadian stakes-placed Leavem in Malibu. Lady Chesley is one of five foals to race, all winners, produced from the Danzig mare Leaveminthedust, a half sister to grade 3 stakes winners Reload, Philanthropist, and Defer.

Lady Chesley was bred in Ontario by William D. Graham. BH

UNBRIDLED MO UPSETS IN LADIES CLASSICBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Red Oak Stable's homebred Unbridled Mo played the upsetter Jan. 29 in the $400,000 Houston Ladies

Classic (G3).Three-time grade 1 winner and odds-on favorite

I'm a Chatterbox loomed during the stretch run to the wire, but the Uncle Mo filly turned away her older, more accomplished rival with determination to win the 1 1/16-mile dirt test by 2 3/4 lengths at Sam Houston Race Park.

The top-finishing pair trailed the field during the backstretch running, as Unbridled Mo raced in fifth and I'm a Chatterbox, off at 1-2, took up the rear in the six-horse field, 6 1/2 lengths off leader Danzatrice.

Danzatrice set fractions of :23.37 and :47.55 through a half-mile, but soon after faded. Unbridled Mo took over to cover six furlongs in 1:11.52 and made a three-

wide move in the final turn. I'm a Chatterbox traveled four- and five-wide in the final bend and pulled within a head with a furlong to run, but flattened out late as Unbridled Mo pulled away under jockey Jose Ortiz.

"She's a big filly, and as soon as she got into that big stride at the three-eighths pole, I knew I had a chance to win," said Ortiz, who won three of the five stakes Sunday on the "Houston Racing Festival" card at Sam Houston. "When I'm a Chatterbox came outside of me, I said, 'OK, let me go left-handed now' and when I went left-handed, she responded very well."

The 4-year-old filly, out of the Unbridled mare Unbridled Waters, hit the wire in 1:42.89 to collect her second grade 3 win. Her first came in the 2016 Monmouth Oaks (G3) Aug. 20 at Monmouth Park. She now has five wins from seven starts and $466,180 in earnings for trainer Todd Pletcher.

"We're very fortunate," said Red Oak owner John Brunetti. "What you have to do is, you have to have the best horse, best rider, best trainer, and that day is yours. I can't wait to get her in the breeding shed, but she's

got some more work to do."

I'm a Chatterbox, the winner of last year's Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (G1) and Delaware Handicap (G1), now has more than $2.3 million in earnings with her second-place finish. Grade 2 winner Family Tree checked in third in the Houston Ladies Classic, another 1 1/4 lengths back.

Unbridled Mo is a half sister to grade 3 winner Unbridled Essence (Essence of Dubai), who also was bred and raced by Red Oak. BH

MAKER GETS TRIFECTA IN CONNALLY TURF CUPBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

For the fourth year in a row, trainer Mike

Maker saddled the win-ner of the $200,000 John B. Connally Turf Cup Stakes (G3T) at Sam Houston Race Park. But in this year's edition, Maker not only trained the winner Bigger Picture, but had the trifecta as Oscar Nominated and Green-grassofyoming finished second and third, respec-tively.

In the 1 1/2 mile test Jan. 29 over firm turf, longshot Fall of Troy jumped out for the early lead, with Oscar Nominated tracking close in second and favorite Bigger Picture another length back in third. Fall of Troy set a leisurely pace of :25.23 and :51.49 through the first half mile.

Around the second of three turns, jockey Jose Ortiz asked Bigger Picture to move up through an opening on the rail to take control on the backstretch. With six furlongs going in 1:17.90 and a mile in 1:43.35, the 6-year-old gelding maintained his narrow lead but Fall of Troy and Oscar Nominated did not let him get more than a half-length away.

As the field moved into final turn, Bigger Picture used his inside spot to his advantage and took off down the stretch as Oscar Nominated and Greengrassofyoming chased gamely but were no match. Bigger Picture stopped the clock in 2:32.24, 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Oscar Nominated in second, with Greengrassofyoming another three-quarters of a length back.

Hay Dakota, West Road, Phantom Trip, Domikate, and Fall of Troy completed the order of finish.

Bigger Picture returned $4.20, $2.40, and $2.10 across the board. Oscar Nominated paid $2.40 and $2.10, and Greengrassofyoming returned $2.40.

Bred in Kentucky by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, the son of Badge of Silver was claimed by his current owner Three Diamonds Farm in November 2015 at Aqueduct Racetrack for $40,000. This is his second graded stakes win, following his 1 1/4-length score in the Nov. 12 Red Smith Handicap (G3T) at Aqueduct. He now boasts a record of 9-4-1 from 22 starts.

Last year, Maker won this race with Da Big Hoss, who won by 4 1/2 lengths in a track-record time of 2:28.16. In 2015, he won with Coalport and in 2014 with Admiral Kitten.

Two races earlier on the card, the $75,000 Frontier Utilities Turf Sprint, was another Maker-Ortiz score as the Ramsey's Partly Mocha had a driving stretch run to win by a head over odds-on favorite Hogy and Florent Geroux. The final time for the five furlongs on the turf was :57.64.

It was the first stakes win for the 8-year-old West Virginia-bred gelding, who now has a record of 8-8-7 from 35 starts. BH

CHAMPAGNE ROOM SOLID AHEAD OF LAS VIRGENESBy BloodHorse Staff

The 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner and champion 2-year-old filly Cham-

pagne Room worked five furlongs Jan. 29 in 1:00 flat at Santa Anita Park, in preparation for her 3-year-old debut against monster Santa Ynez Stakes (G2) winner Unique Bella in Santa Anita's grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes at one mile Feb. 4.

"Awesome" is how trainer Peter Eurton summed up the drill under exercise rider Jose (Pepi) Aragon. "I'm very pleased with her work."

Champagne Room, a bay daughter of Broken Vow, has been working steadily since her Breeders' Cup win last Nov. 5 at Santa Anita. Four of her last seven recorded breezes were the fastest at their respective distances.

The filly has only finished worse than third once while competing in three grade 1 races and the grade

2 Sorrento Stakes, which she won by 1 1/4 lengths over Miss Southern Miss.

Among the 123 recorded works on Santa Anita's fast main track Sunday was a seven furlong move in 1:25 1/5 by Sheer Flattery, a contender for the Feb. 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) for 3-year-old Triple Crown prospects. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer called it "a nice workout" under exercise rider Freddie Rodriguez. BH

BARBARO'S BROTHER NICANOR GETS FIRST WINNERBy Mary Reedert @BH_MReeder

Nicanor, the full brother to the late 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Bar-

baro, had his first winner when Joseph Besecker's Nica-more sped to a 2 1/4-length victory in a Jan. 28 Laurel Park maiden claiming race.

In his fifth start, the 3-year-old colt broke quickest from the gate in the six-furlong race, but was rated behind the eager Don't Be Scared. Nicamore challenged in the far turn with Three Beans giving chase, and was able to pull clear to score.

Three Beans finished second and Let Me Sleep On It rallied for third.

Nicamore made his first two starts at Laurel Park in October, finishing off the board in both. In his third start Dec. 10 at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races going 4 1/2-furlongs he finished second by a neck after a long stretch duel. Then he finished second by a half length Jan. 13 going 5 1/2 furlongs back at Laurel.

Bred in Maryland by Timothy Rooney, Nicamore is out of the stakes-winning Doneraile Court mare The Great Tyler.

Lael Stables' Nicanor raced from 2009-12 and was multiple stakes placed. He earned $147,697 in 18 starts. Although he did not perform to the level of Barbaro, he was followed closely by fans. He stands at Shamrock Farm in Woodbine, Md., where his 2017 fee is $2,000. BH

PEGASUS PUTS UNBRIDLED'S SONG ON TOPBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Nowhere is the impact of a $12 million race felt more keenly than on the general leading sire list for North

America, where Unbridled's Song has made a meteor-ic rise to the top. In 1:47.61, the late son of Unbridled's progeny earnings went from $276,412 to $7,276,412.

Now with Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) winner Arrogate primed for the rest of his 4-year-old campaign with the year-end target of another run in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), it is quite possible that Unbridled's Song could remain the leading sire largely off the outcome of a few races.

To further put in perspective how one race has influenced Unbridled's Song's ranking historically, his progeny earnings through Jan. 28—barely one month into the year—is more than his progeny have earned in all but three years since 2001. Unbridled's Song had his best year in 2016 with his progeny raking in $10,421,244 in purses. Arrogate was his chief earner with $4,084,600 for owner Juddmonte Farm.

Unbridled's Song previously had his second-best and third-best years by earnings in 2013 and 2008, respectively. In 2013 his progeny collected $9,509,946 led by Eclipse champion 3-year-old Will Take Charge, who won four graded stakes on his way to earning nearly $3 million. Unbridled's Song would finish 2013 ranked as North America's sixth-leading sire, the highest end-of-the-year ranking he's achieved on the general leading sire list. In 2008 Unbridled's Song was the 10th-leading sire with $7,287,632 in progeny earnings with his son Midshipman taking the title of chief earner with $1.38 million in prize money.

The sires of the second-, third-, and fourth-place finishers in the Pegasus World Cup also rose accordingly on the general leading sire's list.

Adena Springs' Ghostzapper, the sire of second-place finisher and Queen's Plate winner Shaman Ghost, is now ranked as the second-leading sire with $1,999,650. Ghostzapper (by Awesome Again)

finished as the 20th-leading sire last year with $7,803,733 in earnings.

The late Harlan's Holiday, the sire of Pegasus World Cup third-place finisher Neolithic, is now the third-leading sire with $1,410,238 in earnings. Neolithic, whose best performance prior to the Pegasus World Cup was a second in the grade 3 Discovery Stakes, earned a cool $1 million for owner Starlight Racing for finishing 3 1/2 lengths behind Shaman Ghost, who was 4 3/4 lengths behind Arrogate.

One feature of the inaugural Pegasus World Cup was that all finishers from fourth through 12th received $250,000. This helped Keen Ice raise his sire Curlin's progeny earnings to $720,359 to date, good enough to put him in the fourth spot on the general leading sire list.

Arrogate's big payday had an equally powerful influence on the ranking of his broodmare sire, Distorted Humor. WinStar Farm's hallmark stallion is the leading North American broodmare sire with $7,669,535. The race bumped up Distorted Humor's lifetime average earnings index as a broodmare sire, too, from 1.63 before the Pegasus World Cup to 1.71. BH s Share this story
