GhIPPs Interoperability FAQ’s What is Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI)? MMI is the service which allows direct and seamless transfer of funds from one mobile money wallet to another across networks. e.g. An AirtelTigo subscriber can send money from the AirtelTigo money wallet directly to a friend who has an MTN mobile money wallet, or Vodafone cash etc. Why is it important to have MMI? Prior to the introduction of MMI, mobile money operators largely operated as closed platforms. Users of one network could not directly transfer money to users of other networks. This required mobile money users to own multiple phones to transact across networks. MMI will therefore enable mobile money users of one network to directly and seamlessly send money to other mobile money users on other networks. What are the benefits of MMI service? Create convenience for mobile money users Drives financial inclusion Lower cost of transaction Increase service reach Reduces reliance on cash 24/7 Access to funds in wallets and bank accounts Ease of moving funds between wallets and bank accounts As part of phase 1 of this project only the following transaction types will work Peer to peer (mobile wallet to mobile wallet) Wallet to Bank (mobile wallet to bank account) Ease of receiving and making payments for goods and services How can I use the service? MMI service has been integrated into the existing mobile money service. Simply dial your existing mobile money short code(*500# for Airtel Money & *501# for Tigo Cash) to access the service. ➢ What is Mobile Money Interoperability (MMI)?

MMI is the service which allows direct and seamless transfer of funds from one mobile money wallet to another across networks.

e.g. An AirtelTigo subscriber can send money from the AirtelTigo money wallet directly to a friend who has an MTN mobile money wallet, or Vodafone cash etc.

➢ Why is it important to have MMI?

Prior to the introduction of MMI, mobile money operators largely operated as closed platforms.

Users of one network could not directly transfer money to users of other networks. This required

mobile money users to own multiple phones to transact across networks.

MMI will therefore enable mobile money users of one network to directly and seamlessly send

money to other mobile money users on other networks.

o Select option #2 “Send Money ( Other Networks)

o Select option # 1 “To Mobile Number”

o Select option # 2 “Other networks”

o Select recipients network

o Enter the phone number of recipient

o Enter amount

o Confirm name of recipient by entering your PIN to complete the transaction.

• Send to Bank from xAirtel

o Dial *500#

o Select option #2 ‘ Send Money’

o Select option #5 “Other Banks”

o Select option #1 “From Airtel Money Wallet”

o Select the Bank name

o Enter Account number

o Enter amount

o Confirm name of recipient by entering your PIN to complete the transaction.

• Send to Other Network xTigo

o Dial *501#

o Select option #2 “ Buy and Send“ ( Other Networks)

o Select option # 1 “To Mobile Number”

o Select recipients network

➢ Who qualifies for this service?

The service is available to ALL existing registered mobile money subscribers and future mobile money subscribers.

➢ Do I need an additional PIN to use this service?

No, you will use your existing mobile money PIN to authorize all transactions to other networks and banks.

➢ How much money can one transfer?

A subscriber can transfer as per daily limit allowed by their mobile money network operator.

➢ Who do I contact for more information?

• For xTigo subscribers call 100 for xAirtel call 222

• AirtelTigo social media platforms

• AirtelTigo shops

➢ What do I do if something goes wrong with a transaction?

• For xTigo subscribers call 100 for xAirtel call 222

• AirtelTigo social media platforms

• AirtelTigo shops

➢ What are the additional services to be derived from this MMI?

a. Transfer of money from a mobile money wallet to a bank account

(Wallet to Bank - W2B).

This means mobile money users can transfer funds directly from their wallets

to any bank account within the 29 banks listed below.
