Aims and Ambitions

Thames Landscape Strategy- To enhance existing pathways and open spaces

Before choosing our individual sites along the Thames, we assembled a whole Thames scale analysis, as a class combined effort. II have decided to work along the Brentford connection, due to the agricultural advantage, as well as its historic surroundings.

The lack of water around Lot’s Ait and Brentford Ait (Islands) makes it uneasy to create developments that

interact with the rivers edge, opposite waterman’s park and at the mouth of Ferry Quays. The ferry I am proposing won’t

be able to follow its designated route during Low tide. Possibly introduce a rolling footbridge that can be lowered

and raised when necessary.

Proposed Walk

Charles Jencks - Landforms

Where there is green space, it is hardly being used to its full

advantage. Im proposing a floating boardwalk that flows with the tide, with landform designs to emphasize on a flow atmosphere creation.

With limited access into the marina, it is hard for users to get the full experience of their walk along the Thames. During my visit, I felt restricted and most of the time lost. My intention is to analyze the site area and land, and work with the land to create a more welcoming and flowing visit. To create flow, I have looked into landform design by Charles Jencks in order to visualize how he captures that smooth flow effect so often seen in his designs. I also aim to propose plans and designs for paving and bench/decking with a ‘wave’ pattern, to contribute to the flow atmosphere. Im proposing a floating boardwalk that allows people to lay on the water and feel the flow when the tide changes. In order to create a more accessible marina, and a more efficient pathway, I am proposing a sky/boardwalk that goes over the marina, allowing access into Syon park, and over the river re-establishing the long lost link with Kew and the botanical garden.

Ferry Quays Developments

Ferry quays has a vision to become the most desirable place to live in West Londn. It has been redeveloped into luxurious apartments and cottages, as well as offering something more, a community and the chance to

be part of the regeneration. There are local amenities, a seperate harbor, and pier, plenty of seating and attractive decor, as well as an ideal location at the edge of the river. This is a bonus considering it is between

waterman’s park, and Brentford marina, and provides a decent amount of Thames path. Creating connections and links between the public spaces surrounding the Islands is essential. The re introduction of the Brentford

Ferry would be ideal, as Ferry Quays would act as a drop off and pick up point. There are new developments on ferry wharf, including a proposed riverside restaurant/cafe, which would also benefit from something to look at

in the river. (Lot’s Ait)

Experiments with decking and paving to create a more fluid feel to the marina. The new paving will be solely for the marina area, as well as the benches. The wave pattern decking is for the lip of the marina (Floating deck) and just infront of Julius Court.

can be used multiple ways, to provide seating, shelter, or simply for design purposes.

Two of the connections/links along the Toronto Central waterfront between Queens bay boulevard and Lake Ontario, designed by West 8

architects, the Simcoe and Spadina wavedeck. They were inspired by the flow of the lake, and were created to give ‘urban dwellers’ a feel for the flow, using playful curves that change to create ledges and seating, as

well as new perspectives and vantage points. What I am looking to create is a combination of West 8’s curvy boardwalk design, and Charles

Jencks flowing landform design.

Extended development - Thames Path

Extending my previous proposal along a longer stretch of the river’s edge (2km) will make it possible to create a series of public spaces that can link, or connect with each other using varied heights (landforms), access (ferry) pathways and lighting. The allocated area runs north up the river alongside Waterman’s park and up to Kew bridge. By re introducing the ferry, access to and through these new set of public spaces will be much more convenient.

A couple of panoramic views of the islands between Brentford and Kew. Lot’s Ait and Brentford Ait were originally created in order to block the industrial views from the palaces of Kew. They represent the decaying industrial age. The ait’s are also of significance wildife importance, as they act as a haven for flora and fauna, due to the rich intertidal soils. The muds contain flatworms, freshwater shrimp, leech, gastropods, ear snails and ramshorn snail. This creates a rich feeding ground for birds, when the tide is low during winter. I am proposing mini growth container buckets that produce fruit, vegetables, and plants with berries and nectar, to create an alternate source of food for the birds, enhancing the preservation of nature.

Uninhabited and derelict docklands warehouse, however provides a perfect habitat for nesting and feeding grounds, especially Herons. Teal, widgeon, kingfisher are some of the other bird visitors throughout the year.

Exisiting trees on the islands, formed from osier beds over time, create a scrub/woodland consisting mostly of willow/crack willow.

Due to the location of Brentford, it is essential links and connections are focused upon in detail. If a path is to be restored along the Thames from Kew bridge to Syon park, it will be possible to take a trip through Great Britains History from the 17th Century, and the industrial remains.


Amphibious Floating Garden

The Physalia amphibious floating garden, built to resemble a whale, was designed by Vincent Callebaut Architects, and uses

a bio filtration system to clean the rivers it sails upon, mimicking the same process of a aquarium filtration system,

sprouting a green roof garden. Although this is still a concept, the act of using nature as model, measure, and mentor (Janine

Benyus and Biomimicry) is essential for a more sustainable way of living.

Waterman’s park is vital to the regeneration of the Kew/Brentford area since it acts as a cultural and creative hub that attracts visitors. One of my aims is to integrate watermans park with the fossil islands, not so that they connect, but so that they relate to each other, and can be seen from each other.

People enjoy activities, or just plain interaction with the water,

which is nonexsitant at Brentford. All that exists is a slightly green lip

at the front of the marina which was previously used as a BBQ area.

I have proposed landform designs and railing that has a fluid smooth

effect, that creates flow.

I am also proposing a floating platform boardwalk that

allows users to get a feel of the river and become part of it in a

way they wouldn’t normally.

The floating deck consists of 2m timber (African Padauk/Ekki/Jarrah)

that extends into a grassy lip. The deck and the lip are both connected to an

underwater stainless steel acid resistant cage built to support 50x50cm polyethylene spheres that will flow

with the tide of the river. They require no maintenance

Lot’s ait and Brentford ait, although uninhabited and derelict, remain a haven for wildlife and act as a bird sanctuary. The proposal is to create new links and connections for a new thames path, whilst integrating surrounding spaces.

I am proposing to use the islands as a source of food for the bird sanctuary. Floating gardens will have mechanisms designs so they can be self sustainable, and produce nectar, seeds, flowers, and berries to attract and feed insects, amphibians, and birds.

I am not developing Brentford Ait, because it is considered a site of specific importance and acts as a bird sanctuary, but I have sacrificed Lot’s Ait to create interaction and purpose.
