8.1 SCOPE

8.1.1 This part of the Code covers the minimum requirements of building materials, and the criteria for accepting new or alternative building materials.

8.2 MATERIALS

8.2.1 Every material used in fulfillment of the requirements of this Part, unless otherwise specified in this Code or approved, shall conform to the specifications issued by the Ghana Standards Authority. In the case of materials where Ghana Standards are not available, the materials shall conform to the specifications issued by the recognized authority. A list of acceptable standard specifications are given at the end of this part of the Code.

8.2.2 The list given at the end of this part of the Code would be augmented from time to time by amendments, revisions and additions. The Authority shall take cognisance of such amendments and revisions. The latest version of a specification shall, as far as possible, be adopted at the time of enforcement of this part of the Code.

8.3 NEW OR ALTERNATIVE MATERIALS

8.3.1 The provisions of this part do not preclude the use of any material not specifically prescribed. Any such material must be referenced to the Ghana Standards Authority for approval provided it is shown to be satisfactory for the purpose intended and at least the equivalent of that in this Part in quality, strength, effectiveness, fire resistance, durability, safety, maintenance and compatibility.

8.3.2 Approval in writing shall be obtained by the owner or his agent before any new material is used. The Authority having jurisdiction shall base such approval on the principle set forth in Section 8.3.1 and shall require that tests be carried out (Section 8.6) or sufficient evidence or proof be submitted, at the expense of the owner or his agent, to substantiate any claim for the proposed material.

8.4 USED MATERIALS

8.4.1 The use of used materials may not be precluded provided these meet the minimum requirements of Section 8.3 and Part 2 Administration.

8.5 STORAGE OF MATERIALS

8.5.1 All building materials shall be stored on the building site in such a way as to prevent deterioration or the loss or impairment of their structural and other essential properties (see Part 11: Construction practices, Safety and the Environment).

8.6 METHODS OF TEST

8.6.1 Every test of material required in this part or by the Authority having jurisdiction shall be carried out in accordance with standard methods of test issued by the Ghana Standards Authority. In the absence of methods of Tests where Ghana standards are not available, the tests shall conform to the methods of tests issued by the recognized authority. Laboratory tests shall be conducted by recognized laboratories acceptable to the Ghana Standards Authority.

8.6.1.1 The manufacturer/supplier shall ensure that materials conform to the requirements of the specifications of the Ghana Standard and if requested, shall supply a certificate to this effect to the purchaser or his representative.

8.6.1.2 When the certificate in Section 8.6.1.1 are not available, the specimen of the material shall be tested and the cost thereof should be borne by the manufacturer/supplier if the material does not conform to the specification after such tests. If the material is found acceptable, the purchaser will bear the cost of such tests.

8.7 LIST OF STANDARDS

8.7.1 General

The following are Ghana and other equivalent Standards for various building materials and components are to be complied with in fulfillment of the requirements of this Part of the Code.
