Local businesses in Gidgegannup have stepped up to adapt to national health directives which have, in most cases, reduced customer patronage and the ability to trade freely.

“Customers have more time now and they are getting back into gardening so hopefully they will keep it up,” said Tim.

At Tim Eva's Nursery vegetable seedlings and seed potatoes have been walking out the door.

Prior to the Covid-19 lockdown the nursery's retail side was slow but new customers are coming in to learn how to be more self-sufficient.

Ann Williams and Alan Edge have closed their newsagency on Saturdays as a direct result of the pandemic.

“They enjoy the visit as it gives them a valid reason to get out,” according to Tim.

Gidge Rural has fast-tracked a web-ordering system and pre-prepares orders for older customers who can remain in their cars while the goods are loaded.

“There were a lot of new faces for the first few weeks looking for dog food and kitty litter,” said Helen Martin-Smith from Gidge Rural which also supplies soil and building materials.

Social distancing regulations have stopped bar and restaurant service at the Noble Falls Tavern which continues to provide a takeaway service of food and beverages from 4-8pm.

Keg deliveries have been suspended but 'growlers' (flagon beer) will be available until stocks run out.

“More people want to pay by Eftpos which is sometimes a problem as it shares the line with the phone,” said Alan who is expecting even more parcel deliveries due to online shopping.

There have also been interruptions to mail and parcel freight deliveries from the eastern states due to the suspension of interstate passenger planes.

Soil for veggie gardens and pine posts are in demand as customers with more spare time build cubby houses and playground equipment for their housebound kids.

Sharon and Brian Wickins have encouraged their staff to take annual leave and a returning chef will trial takeaway deliveries within a 10km radius of the tavern.

Early panic buying of stockfeed was reported by Gidgegannup Produce and Saddlery, Gidge Rural and Gidge One Stop (Pullela's).

Local business adapts to Covid-19 changesBy Ieva Tomsons

“There is a shortage of Level 3 medication and no choice in brands allocated at the wholesale level. We're in a pandemic and people have to understand that,” said Jana.

Even before the Federal Government banned the issue of multiple prescriptions Jana had acted to ensure no one was left without their medication due to hoarding.

“Tissues are still a problem and flour and pasta are in short supply as the warehouse suppliers can't keep up with demand,” he said.

“Toilet paper is king,” laughs Gidgegannup IGA Xpress proprietor John Pellegrini.

“We couldn't get hand sanitiser for our customers, so we started making our own.”Even with low fuel prices income from the Vibe bowsers is lower with fewer people being able to travel across the intra-state border at Morangup and Toodyay Roads.

Pharmacist Jana Practico at Gidgegannup Pharmacy is well placed to deal with the hand sanitiser shortage and also makes her own.

Social distancing is 'encouraged' at the counter where a binding twine barrier at the counter sports a 'warning/electric fence' which gets a laugh.

“There is no shortage of hay and chaff but gas sales have definitely increased as more people stay home,” said Lyn.

At Gidgegannup Produce and Saddlery Lyn and Bob Stevens say it's business as usual, including delays to specialised horse feed which occurred regularly before the pandemic.

Jana and her staff were shocked at the abuse they received from an established customer who berated them for closing on Saturdays which Jana said was necessary to give staff the chance to shop for their groceries in depleted stores.

“At the start trade was a bit slower and (after the restrictions) some 2-litre casks were out of stock but prices remain the same,” Bec said.

Gidge Grog manager Bec Thomson is trading as normal within the limitations of government restrictions on the amounts of alcohol people can buy.

Hairdresser Angie Gray from Gidge Hair Salon was another service provider who made up her own mind about how she would operate during the pandemic.

Bev Kerr at Gidge Takeaway has reduced her opening hours and now delivers orders to drivers who can stay in their cars and pay by Eftpos. Inside seating is still available but chairs are placed 2m apart.“We can't get hake and vegetables have increased from $50 to $80 dollars but we are wearing the costs and not handing them on to customers.”

Sunday trading has resumed and they are baking a lot more

“The government directives were very confusing and contradictory so I did what I thought was right for my customers and will reopen when it feels right to do so. The way things are going , that will now be on Tuesday May 12.”

Things are looking up at Gidgegannup Bakery which was hit hard with the closure of its cafe and alfresco eating area.

While she is entitled to keep working she shut up shop due to concerns for her older and vulnerable clients.

Note: Gidgegram interviews were conducted in mid-April and with easing restrictions trading conditions may have changed.

Local computer specialist Glen Bailes says his business GB's PCs is always unpredictable but has noticed an increase in recommissioning old computers as more people are working from home and children are being home schooled.

The restaurant produces its own olive oil but this year because the fruit is hand-picked and processed there was no production.

Proprietor Antje Buurman is happy to provide leftover bread, pastry items and meals to the local Country Women's Association. “They do a wonderful job distributing to families in need.”

family-size pies and some takeaway meals.

Cherith Grove Restaurant chef Richard Mehl now provides pre-ordered takeaway meals on Friday and Saturday nights and hopes to reopen when spacing regulations are eased and he can re-employ his four casual staff.

There has never been a more pressing time for locals to stand by their small businesses – shop local and keep shopping local.

Gidge One Stop lessee Craig Chappell had only been in business a month when the pandemic struck.

Apart from an initial run on stockfeed the lack of passing traffic has severely impacted the new business which also sells coffee, snacks and a wide variety of plants.“The local community has made us feel very welcome,” said Craig who may see an upturn in trade now that the Morangup community can once again patronise Gidgegannup now that the confusion of the border community's travel rights has been resolved.

Celebrating 100 Years

Many people will be standing at the end of their drives at 6.00am thon 25 April, 2020, with their radios to hear the reveille and also

candles to honour those who are no longer with us. Poppies have been painted and will be displayed, musical instruments will be heard across Gidge. This will probably be one of our more moving ceremonies, as, although we are apart, we are surely acting as a united country supporting each other.

This will have to be the strangest ANZAC Day any of us will have known. Nevertheless plans are in place to make this memorable. A huge movement across Australia has ensured that Australia will not forget those who have done so much for our country and all its' people.

The Gidge community is coping pretty well with self- isolation. If you live in Gidge this is nothing new as most of us have been carrying this practise out for years. Social Distancing is a bit more difficult as the Gidge community are a friendly bunch and find this not so easy. Saw our neighbour last Thursday as she put her bin out and so did we; so we had a nice chat across the road whilst waving to the passing neighbours on the road. Never thought of putting the bin out as a social occasion.

Swan Active Walking Challenge – The City's Swan Active team have an exciting challenge for you to get involved in. Running across six weeks, and with prizes up for grabs, this brand new Walking Challenge is one of a kind! Check out how you can compete to 'walk the Bibbulmun Track' –only in the familiar surrounds of your local area. Interested? Get involved

WA is doing well at the moment but no reason to relax, there is still a battle to be fought and the community is doing an amazing job in very strange times. The more we listen to our leaders now the sooner a more normal life can resume.

Still though we need rain – it's very dry and Gidge seems to be missing out on the rain other parts have had. At the moment only 5mm for the whole month, although May looks more promising and it can even rain on the 24th May as the Field Day has had to be cancelled.

Rural Properties Revegetation Program - Applications for the 2020 Rural Revegetation Program will open on April 3, 2020 through an online form on this page. Applications will close on May 1, 2020. Please note: this year, due to limited availability of volunteers, unfortunately you will not be able to select your plants. You will receive a random allocation of trees, shrubs and groundcovers on pick up day. Please maintain social distancing for your health and safety and for the volunteers.

On the subject of bins:

Lots of takeaway options in Gidge now and even home delivery. An amazing amount of information up on the Community fb page and worth checking out.

Rubbish still being dumped around Gidge – report to City at [email protected]. Very efficient at picking it up and tracking down the perpetrators.

A man goes out with his friends for the night. Before he leaves he tells his wife, "I promise I will be home by midnight."Midnight comes and goes. He finally arrives home at about 3 AM. As he walks in he realizes the cuckoo clock is about to go off. As it begins to go off he has a flash of genius and decides to coo another 9 times. He sneaks in to bed satisfied with himself. The next morning he wakes up and his wife has breakfast made. She doesn't seem to be mad. Satisfied with himself he asks her, "You sleep okay last night?”She replies, "Yeah, but we need a new cuckoo clock."He asks her why and she tells him, "Last night it cooed 3 times. Then it yelled, 'Crap!' It cooed another 6 times and giggled a little bit. Finally it cooed 3 more times, farted, and tripped on the carpet."

Racing is thriving with no crowds in attendance and one of the few sports to watch on television. Interesting to see if the AFL gets off the ground this season. Certainly makes the weekends more productive.

And so we carry on in Gidge and the next month should be interesting to see if restrictions are lifted or become more restrictive should there be an increase in cases of the virus. Will see if I can gather more news for then

Lots of gardening to do at the moment. Really needed to catch up on last year when spring was taken up with visits to hospitals. The veggie garden seems to have come into its own again with queues outside Bunnings eagerly waiting to buy seedlings and seeds. The most exciting news is that toilet rolls are back in the supermarkets. Thought this might be the case when I went shopping and every second trolley had a pack sitting on the top of the trolley. Shopping is a whole new experience with everyone being polite (mostly) and none of the hideous scenes that appeared on the news of supermarkets over east.

And so to the joke

PERTH HILLS STRATEGIC PLANNING VISION;

Cr. Henderson has expressed his concern re. the Lillie Road/Reserve Road intersection which is still raising its head with regular reports of driver inattention. It would be good if Jim Coten could write to Main Roads expressing concern.

GPA have now had a telephone conversation with the RDA and been given the background to this initiative. The next step will be that a survey will be sent out to get the community's views on several topics. The results of these

GPA April and May meetings cancelled due to Corona Virus. GPA could not meet due to social distancing so held our meeting by email. Thanks to those members who have had input. Looks like next month might be the same as well.

Comment has been sought by the Shire of Mundaring and the GPA have made a submission supporting this proposal.

Regarding all other premises in the area, we will soon be in a position to update everyone on how we will get connections ready before the June deadline if we cannot provide them through a Fixed Wireless option – We will have some information for you soon. We are meeting this week to see final plans.

Telstra advise re. mobile coverage: The Telstra Go Repeater (Stationary version) would be the best option, it would provide coverage across your house – if you looking for coverage across the farm the mobile/portable version that can be installed in vehicles might also be an option. Below is a link to our Regional Australia webpage that has more information https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/network-coverage-extension-devices

NBN Report: We understand the tower we call Gidgegannup South proposed for Bunning Rd is proceeding with local council approvals next month so we hope to have a good update then. Please note though that final approvals + preparation + construction means we are still some months away.

It is now being scattered into the bush by wind and animals. Please would you arrange a pickup to occur as soon as possible. Hopefully there will be evidence so you can identify the culprits.

Should you have any queries regarding this project, please contact the City's Asphalt and Seal Engineer, Michael Newman on 0488 700 386.

The conversation was to learn about the Issues and Needs the community have in this area. A survey will be sent out in the near future on line seeking community's input.

P l e a s e r e p o r t d u m p e d r u b b i s h t o t h e C i t y a t [email protected]. Thanks to the City who are being most efficient on clearing the mess up and tracking down the perpetrators.

To ensure the safety of both the City's contractors and the general public, it will be necessary to implement traffic management restrictions. Local residents living on Kooringal Vl will still have access to their properties; however delays of approximately 20 minutes should be anticipated when asphalting the intersection, as there are no other alternative roads for access/ egress.

RUBBISH:

The City of Swan advises that as part of the City's Annual Resurfacing Program, it will shortly commence resurfacing works on the intersection of Kooringal Vale and Brennan Rise, in Gidgegannup.

A member has reported to the City that a bin load of domestic rubbish has been dumped into the gully drain on the bottom s-bend that is approx. 300m south of the Wooroloo Brook bridge on OBrien Rd.

ANZAC DAY 2020 - With Anzac Day ' s once indestructible traditions cruelled by forced isolation, Australians will instead walk to the ends of their driveways on April 25 and light up the dawn.RSL branches in every state have unanimously endorsed the gesture, with families across the nation expected to stand at their gates, on balconies or verandahs at 6am and hold a candle to fallen heroes. Since regular public marches and services are cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis, radio networks are signing on to livestream services people can tune in to outside on phones and tablets.Musicians everywhere are being called on to take to their front yards to play the Last

surveys will be used to frame workshops composed of councillors from the Local Governments in the Perth Hills. Toodyay and York will be involved in this workshop as well. This will be a regional initiative. This is a Federal initiative.

NOTIFICATION OF WORKS – Resurfacing of the Intersection of Kooringal Vale and Brennan Rise, Gidgegannup.

Rubbish has also been reported dumped in Berry Road, City informed and it has been picked up. Hopefully some information on to who has dumped it may be found.

The resurfacing works will be completed in one day, on Tuesday 28th April 2020 between the hours of 7am – 5pm; although this may be extended if adverse weather conditions are experienced.

· A zero percent rate increase for 2020/21,

What began as a grassroots idea to mark Australia's great day of remembrance has grown into a national campaign

Post and Rouse or Reveille for neighbours. Residents are being urged to dress windows and mailboxes with poppies and kids to make bright red “wreaths” from painted egg cartons to hang on doors.

Very disappointing but no alternative in the present circumstances. So there you are no Field Day this year but be assured we will be back next year and it will be one of the best ever.

Following the clear directive given at the Prime Minister's press conference that the ban on gatherings over 500 people would be in place for the next six months, we have no choice but to cancel the Field Day. The Field Day Committee regret this but fully support the Government in their efforts to keep the community safe.

UPDATE: We have booked the Showgrounds for the weekend of 29th and 30th May, 2021. Slightly optimistic as none of us know what the situation will be then. Directly we know whether an event such as the Field Day can practically be held next year, we will let the community know and also all our participants whether exhibitors, entertainers, speakers and the whole list of other people involved in our event.

Thank you to all our exhibitors who have sent their applications in and we hope to see you next year. Those exhibitors who have already paid for their site please forward me your banking details so I can eftpos a refund.

Thanks to all those who were going to be involved this year and we hope you will be at our 2021 Field Day to be held on Sunday, 30th May, 2021

So many people take part the list runs into the hundreds, The Honey Festival, The Slow Food Movement, the Alpaca Association, The Mounted Games of WA, The Woodturners Association of WA, all the livestock groups who come along and individual livestock exhibitors as well, the Bullsbrook Poultry Association, all the local groups and associations who come along, all our wonderful exhibitors, some of whom have been attending since we started the event in 2008, The School, The CWA, the sporting clubs, the Fire Brigades. Around the Paddockby The Farmer

How to prepare your land for a bumper crop

This month I'm concentrating on soil preparation. First and foremost, clean-up leaf litter, branches and rocks on the paddocks to be sown. Once these obstacles are out of the way, movement with machinery is a breeze.

Grazing animals will achieve a partial result but won't kil l the plants. Scarifying or ploughing will be needed to complete the weed kill. This second option usually takes a couple of weeks longer than the knock-down takes.

Spraying with a knock-down herbicide is the easiest and quickest way to prevent weed germination.

If you are thinking of putting in pasture or a hay crop this coming season, here are a few tips on achieving a successful crop. But don't forget, rain is needed – and at the right time.

If there is animal manure build-up in the cropping area, grab a set of harrows and drag them around to break the manure up. The manure can then be worked into the ground at the next stage.

It's important to know the fertiliser history of your property. If this is not known, now is the time to start.

My rule of thumb is to apply lime every year, or as necessary.

Lime is a valuable form of fertiliser and comes in different forms, from lime sand through to specially blended mixes (my preference). Gypsum is another product that may be needed on heavier soils.

Testing for soil acidity (pH) can be a handy tool in finding out what is needed to make your soils as productive as possible.

Fertiliser (superphosphate) with pot ash and thirdly trace elements are essential for healthy soils and should be applied in a rotating five-year cycle.

In the four th year spread on ly superphosphate and the final fifth-year rotation apply superphosphate and potash.

Apply superphosphate and potash in the third year. There are various grades of potash and a pH test will indicate what your land requires.

In the first year apply superphosphate and trace elements. In the second year, spread superphosphate on its own.

Once you have prepared your land, seeding can be started in the first year. Seeding will be covered in the next issue of our local and excellent Gidgegram.Don't delay, make a start – there's a lot of pleasure in growing your own crop.

May 2020 9

ON MARCH 17 and 20 Chalice Gold Mines Pty Ltd applied for 10 new exploration licences which cover more

2than 2000km in the Shire of Toodyay including Lower Chittering. If granted, the mining tenements will straddle the town of Toodyay, the entire Julimar State Forest and Conservation Reserve, half of the Avon Valley National Park, Coondle, Nunile, Hoddys Well, Morangup and Bejoording. The rush to secure these tenements comes on the back of a rare discovery of high-grade nickel-copper-palladium group elements (PGEs) on Chalice's approved 26-by-7km resource area in Julimar. Shares in Chalice (ASX: CHN) soared 90.6 per cent to trade at 30.5 cents after the initial announcement and a month later doubled again to trade at around 60 cents. In mid-April a further announcement of another high-grade resource area 60m east of the original discovery raised the share price a further 83 per cent to hover around the $1 mark then soaring to $1.37 before closing at $1.05 on April 24. The find has been compared to the 2012 Nova nickel discovery in WA's Fraser Range which saw the cash-strapped explorer Sir ius ' shares skyrocket 4000 per cent from 5 cents to $2.50. With more that 23 million to invest, Chalice is no 'penny-stock' exploration company and is chaired by mining investor and entrepreneur Tim Goyder the brother of former Westfarmers, Qantas and Woodside chairman and now head of the AFL Commission Richard Goyder who owns Glendearg farm on the Bindi-Bindi-Toodyay Road near Culham in the Shire of Toodyay. Tim Goyder holds 17 percent of Chalice stocks. “Given the rarity and value of nickel-sulphide discoveries, particularly in Western Australia, and the recent all-time high palladium price of more than $US2800 per ounce ($4800 per ounce), the result is specially significant,” said managing director Alex Dorsch on the company's website. The company is at the early stages of exploration and has assayed six holes with plans for further drilling including in the Julimar State Forest if it is granted ministerial approval. Chalice's reverse circulation drilling exploration rig is currently on privately

In a corporate presentat ion to shareholders on April 16, the company estimated it would take from four to six months to gain approval to get on the ground in the State forest to explore a 24km area of potentially high deposits of nickel-copper-PGEs.

owned land on Keating Road which leads into the Julimar State Forest where the company is permitted to conduct airborne electromagnetic (EM) surveys.

Residents in Lower Chittering are concerned about the increase in traffic if mining starts in their area.

HikeWest has expressed concerns that the exploration area coincides with approximately 30km of the Camino Salvado Pilgrimage Trail which traces Benedictine monk Dom Salvado's journey to establish a mission in New Norcia in 1846.

Chalice is now sourcing a second drilling rig to operate in the Julimar area which it says is well-situated in relation

Areal EM surveying determines s u r f a c e c h a n g e s i n e l e c t r i c a l conductivity and can give an indication of the resource area's nickel-copper-PGEs potential but it is not foolproof due to conductivity of other things in the ground and Chalice will need to secure on-ground access to verify results.

to access to roads, rail, Fremantle Port and established infrastructure.

In the Gardenwith Tim Eva

Yes, we are still hanging out for regular rain to start but the deciduous trees are changing colour, nights and days are cooler and plants are growing.

It is such a busy time of the year, pruning shrubs that have flowered over summer, putting some fertiliser out for the coming flowering season for most native plants and tidying up the orchard.

I find it's a great time to review what plants have performed well over spring and summer which helps plan for future planting.

SUMMER is over and we are in the middle of autumn – such a fabulous time of the year.

For any tropical-type plants such as Hibiscus, Abelia and Buddleja which have flowered over the summer, a light prune helps before it gets too cold. Leave heavier pruning until spring has sprung.

With still no regular rain, soil water repellancy is often a plant killer in autumn. A final treatment of wetting agent at this time of the year will help the soil absorb more of the rain when it finally comes.

Hakeas, Grevilleas and other natives are all budding up and starting to flower and, as a general rule, prune off one third after flowering.

Busy time ahead for keen gardeners

It's change-over time in the vegetable garden. Tomatoes and capsicums are finishing, the brassica family is starting; that is broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts. It's also a wonderful time to plant beans, peas, carrots and beetroot.

With some Grevilleas this can be a challenge to find a time when they are not in flower but sacrificing a few flowers for the greater good results in a better plant that will produce even more flowers.

If you have Hyacinth or Tulip bulbs pop them in the fridge in a labelled paper bag for a couple of weeks before planting out.

If you have a special topic you would like In the Garden to tackle, please email: [email protected].

You could even make it a competition to see who in your household can grow the best broccoli or the biggest cauliflower.

With many kids still at home it's a great activity to get them to plant and grow something edible in a pot or in the garden. Turn it into a science activity by getting them to keep a diary recording the day they plant, how much growth happens weekly, how often they fertilise and when they get to eat the produce.

Kids love growing vegetables in the garden. Good family fun.

As part of our standard procedure during COVID-19, and to ensure our patients receive the best and most appropriate prehospital care, our Crews will be asking all patients if they have any flu like symptoms. This is to protect our amazing Volunteers and our Community of Morangup against the spread of any potentially infectious illness including COVID-19.

When calling for an Ambulance, you will be asked by the 000 call taker if you have flu like symptoms. When our crews arrive, they will ask you the same questions. Please don't be scared to answer truthfully, even if you think you just have a mild cold. We have strict hygiene measures in place to keep you and our crews safe. Our goal is to help our community stay safe and stop the spread - but we can't do that without our resilient and fantastic Community behind us.

So locals please drive carefully around the circle, until these animals are caught and the fence fixed.

Since April 19 there have been reports of a mob of 30 to 50 sheep wandering along the firebreak at Red Brook Circle Morangup. The mob disappears into the bush along the Red Brook when approached. Residents are concerned that they will wander on to Toodyay Road which could cause accidents, and as the creek is dry at the moment the animals will find it hard to find water. In the meantime the owner has been located and several have been taken home. However some still seem to be elusive and have escaped again. Indeed one was sighted running along Red Brook Circle on the 24th April.

Relief is also coming for residents and ratepayers, with a zero per cent rate rise, zero per cent rise in City fees and charges and zero interest charged on overdue rates or other charges for the 2020/2021 financial year.

Further actions will streamline procurement and statutory planning processes, fast tracking the ability to stimulate the local economy.

There will be no parking charges for up to six months, with a possible extension if the State of Emergency is still in effect.

In acknowledging the burden these measures will place on the City's finances, Council have asked that a formal request be put to the State Treasurer to provide a five year interest-free loan for the amount of $25 million to ensure the City can adequately respond to and recover from COVID-19.

“The City of Swan recognises the significant financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our local people and businesses. “Our COVID-19 relief package is designed to make life a bit easier for people during challenging times and prepare us for recovery.

A complete list of support measures is listed below.

The City is also delivering rent relief to support those in lease arrangements with the City who are experiencing financial hardship as a result of COVID-19.

The measures include an $8.85 million economic stimulus package to increase local investment, encourage job creation and inject money quickly into the local economy.

At the Special Council Meeting on April 15, 2020, the City of Swan Council approved comprehensive measures designed to support City residents, ratepayers and businesses during their time of greatest financial need.

The funds will go towards 'shovel ready' capital works and major maintenance programs that will be fast tracked to stimulate the local economy.

• Rate relief through flexible payment options and creation of a City of Swan COVID-19 policy to govern debt recovery during the State of Emergency. The COVID-19 policy is to include payment arrangements and debt recovery, and be presented at the May or June Ordinary Meeting of Council.
