    Startup Weekend

    More than 30 cities around the worldare hosting Startup Weekend eventsduring GEW 2011. Aspiring entrepreneurs

    team up at simultaneous events designed to create as many start-upsas possible. Over the course of 54 hours, newly-formed teams in locations such as

    Lisbon, Sao Paulo and Sofia present to judges at the Sunday eveningshowcase.

    Last year, national winners from across the globe were put to a publicvote to crown the overall Global Startup Battle winner. In 2010 thiswas MIMIX at YallaStartup Weekend, Lebanon who won for their

    pioneering web and mobile app, which builds on speech recognitionand 3D modelling techniques to translate speech into sign languagein real-time.

    Cleantech Open Global Ideas Competition

    The contest is a hunt for the mostpromising clean technology ideasanywhere in the world. One national

    winner from more than 20 countries will thencompete during Global Entrepreneurship Weekat the global finals for a chance at $100,000 in support and services.

    Last year, Abeo of Denmark received first prize for their patentedSuper-Light Structure technology which minimizes the energy andmaterials necessary during building construction.

    Designed to promote global citizenshipand social responsibility throughentrepreneurship, Your Big Year will attract more than

    45,000 entrants from around the world to compete for afree year-long world tour meeting world leaders,innovators and inspirational entrepreneurs.

    Last year, the competition brought 24 internationalfinalists to Liverpool, England, during GEW 2010, via aseries of online challenges won by 30 year old CarielleDoe, a freelance journalist from NY, USA and 23 yearold Michael Teoh, a youth activist from Malaysia.
