Excellence

our Journeytowards

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to Volume 13 of the Getz Pharma Life and Times newsletter. This issue provides an overview of our events and activities in 2014,and celebrates our numerous achievements and accomplishments.

Since the last time we met on this platform, there have been significantdevelopments at Getz Pharma. We have once again been rewarded the BestExport Performance by the Government of Pakistan, and have receivedawards for our CSR and environmental initiatives. The highlight of 2014 wasindeed the Pre-Qualification of our Quality Control laboratory by the WorldHealth Organization (WHO), making us one of the 38 companies worldwidewith this accreditation. We spoke about the WHO Pre-qualification extensivelyin the last issue. In this one, we focus on our remarkable journey and how wehave reached the position where we are today. With the hard work, dedication and innovation of our employees and supporters we have risenfrom the 198th position in 1995, to being amongst the top pharmaceuticalcompanies in most markets we operate in today. We are now looking atachieving the WHO Pre-qualification of our manufacturing facility.

We are proud to be moving at a rapid pace, a result of a bold and ambitiousvision which we developed from our very beginning. It is our belief thatregardless of size, industry and nationality, the future of an organization isdetermined by its vision, values, leadership and culture – a culture thatreinforces the core values of the company. We committed ourselves toinvesting in state-of-the-art technologies, systems, facilities and people;creating relationships built on candor, mutual trust and respect; attainingWorld Health Organization pre-qualifications; not compromising on highstandards that we set; and pursuing ‘what is right’ rather than ‘who is right’.Right from the start, we supported a strong culture of people development, making it an equal priority of our business to profitability. At the same time,we were resolute in keeping only the right people on the bus, and gettingthe wrong people off the bus These are factors which guide us towards oursuccess and help us meet and exceed our objectives.

As a result of the implementation of our values, the company has been ableto leverage synergy within the Getz Pharma family and has taken people tothe next level of their performance. This issue documents how the rewardsof peak performance are shared with the Getz Pharma family and thecommunities which it serves.

I wish you and your family the very best for the year ahead,

Khalid Mahmood

Getz Pharma’s journey began in 1995when we acquired Saitex, a smallpharmaceutical company which was

heavily in debt, produced only four productsand had no employee benefits. In twodecades, Getz Pharma has transformed from asmall production facility to a world classbranded generic pharmaceutical companywith a global outlook. In 1995, the companyranked 198th out of 200 companies inPakistan, and today it is rated as the thirdlargest pharmaceutical company in Pakistan, operating= in over 23 countries andproducing over 500 products.

We were determined to start strong with avision, mission and guiding principles, whichwould lead us towards our success. Westarted working on a strong brand portfolioand launched Ribazole in 1996, whichestablished itself as a market leader. This wasfollowed by Risek, which to date, is the topbrand for anti-ulcer and later followed byUniferon another market leader. Since then, our brand portfolio has grown to cater to theincreasing market demands.

The international market was never farfrom our view. In 1998, we began ourinternational operations with entry intoVietnam. By 2001, we were exportingpharmaceuticals products to sixcountries. In 2003, we set up anoffice in Sri Lanka, followed by thePhilippines in 2006. Philippines is nowour largest international market with42 products.

Our growth was indeed phenomenal, aswe were growing at five times the

industry rate within four years afterinception. The industry growth rate was 14percent while we were growing at 55percent. By 2004, we entered the elitebillion rupee club in Pakistan, a feat weaccomplished in less than half the time andwith a smaller product base than otherbillion rupee companies. Our employee basegrew from 45 in 1995 to over 5700 well-trained and qualified personnel today.

Our rapid growth and expanding employeebase, along with operations in a cGMPcompliant production and warehouse facility, helped us win the Prime Minister’s Award forbest export performance in the pharmaceuticalcategory in 2007. We continue to win thisaward every year.

Our expansion continued in full swing. By 2008,IMS had ranked Getz Pharma as the sixth largestpharmaceutical company in Pakistan. Withconstant growth in mind, we invested heavily inbiotechnology and produced Pakistan’s firsthuman insulin, Insuget in 2009, within 3 years, wehad three superior biotech products. Ourinvestments continued, and in 2010, the companyinvested in manufacturing infrastructure for adedicated biotechnology plant, which included anew injectables facility, a dry powder for oralsuspensions facility and a warehouse. We alsoinvested in new offices, a fully equippedgymnasium, training centers and a state of the artauditorium. Today, we are the largest investor andthe second largest tax payer in thepharmaceutical industry in Pakistan and theseventh largest payer of Workers ProfitParticipation Fund (WPPF) in the country.

To ensure, that our products meet and exceedinternational standards, Getz Pharma’s QualityControl laboratory is the only one in Pakistan andamongst 38 in the world which has been pre-qualified and certified by the World HealthOrganization (WHO). Getz Pharma is also the firstand only manufacturing company in Pakistan, andamong the very few in the region that complieswith the principles and guidelines of the currentPharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme(PIC/s) GMP Guide.

Our continuous growth has not interfered withour commitment to the community. We lend agenerous hand towards worthwhile causes andconstructive actions with focus on education, health, environment and culture to help developa better and healthier society. Our CSRinitiatives are both internal and external – ouremployees enjoy generous benefits which alsobenefit society at large.

Counterfeit drugs are amajor issue for the

global pharmaceuticalindustry. not only dosubstandard or fake

drugs deceive patients, but they also harm thereputation of firms that

are committed topromoting better health.

The World HealthOrganization (WHO)pre-qualification of our

Quality Control Laboratoryand our strict compliancewith PIC/S GMP guidelinesare already proof of ourcommitment to quality, however, as an industryleader we have decided togo further in 2014 byimplementing ProjectChogori.

This initiative, launched byour Production team, imprints key safetyinformation on all ourpackages to prove the authenticity and safety of our drugs. Thename of our project, Chogori, is also the name of K2, Pakistan'shighest peak and the second highest mountain in the world, which exemplifies our high standards.

Under this new initiative, a bar code will be printed on eachpackage that will help identify the batch and convey data aboutmanufacturing and expiry dates. This has helped build trust inour brand and increased the professional and scientific look ofour products.

In order to spread word about this important step, our field forceapproached doctors and chemists directly to communicate the vitalfacts of the campaign. We also sent detailed letters and brochuresto ensure that prescribers knew about our efforts to ensure patienthealth and maintain our world class standards. The wide-rangingcampaign involved 2,000 Territory Managers with their AreaManagers and Sales Managers and has influenced over 40,000doctors and 50,000 chemists. Both doctors and patients lauded thiscampaign as it ensures commitment to health and safety. l

Mystical poetry has been an integralpart of our culture and civilization, being commonly sung by village

bards in rural public gatherings, at streetcorners and even in general publicmeetings in cities today. However, to ourmisfortune, this classic literature is beingdrifted away from the hearts and minds ofmost Pakistanis.

People from all walks of life, from doctorsto academics to literature fans, attendedthe launch ceremony of Kalaam-e-Aarifaan in December 2014 and praisedour steps to maintain our traditions.Renowned author Fahmida Riaz spoke

beautifully about our Sufi past andemphasized the need to inculcate thesevalues in our youth, in order to counterviolence and promote respect for diverseviews, cultures and beliefs.

Getz Pharma believes in the preservationof our cultural and social heritage, and isconscious that the Sufi culture has beenneglected because of overpoweringfundamentalist trends in society. Thismarginalization has prompted us to worktowards reviving disappearing Sufi culturalheritage by promoting the messagethrough book form. We are pleased toshare this Sufi knowledge with the world. l

Pharmacovigilance is like a sunshadeto describe the processes formonitoring and evaluating Adverse

Drug Reactions (ADRs) and it is a keycomponent of effective drug regulationsystems, clinical practice and public healthprograms. Pharmacovigilance is defined bythe World Health Organization (WHO) as“the science and activities relating to thedetection, assessment, understanding andprevention of adverse effects or any otherdrug-related problem”. The increase inADRs reported resulted in an increase inthe volume of data handled, making it moreimportant to understandpharmacovigilance, which is now firmlybased on sound scientific principles and isintegral to effective clinical practice. Inrecent years there has been a substantialincrease in the number of clinical trials indeveloped and developing countries. Intheir approval of clinical trials, regulatorybodies look at safety and efficacy of newproducts under investigation. Safetymonitoring of medicines in common use isnow an integral part of clinical practice.

Getz Pharma establishedPharmacovigilance system in Pakistanto detect previously unknown or

poorly understood adverse effects andreactions of medicines. Our focus on drugsafety is a key component of our core values. We informed our stakeholders about theseefforts at key forums, scientific meetings andmajor conferences. We’ve also contributed torenowned journals in the form of publicationssuch as the Journal of Pharmacovigilance andDrug Safety (Official Journal ofInternational Society ofPharmacovigilance). Our responsibility has notjust been limited toverbal perspectives, but on practicalaspects we tried torespond at theearliest to ourmajor stakeholders, medicalcommunity,Regulatory Officialsand Health CareProfessionals.

We believe in educationand training of healthprofessionals in medicine safety, exchange of information betweennational pharmacovigilance guidelines, coordination of such exchange, and the linkingof clinical experience of medicine safety withresearch and health policy, that enhanceeffective patient care.

The scope of pharmacovigilance continuesto broaden as the array of medicinalproducts grows. There is a realization thatdrug safety is more than the monitoring, detection and assessment of ADRsoccurring under clearly defined conditionsand within a specific dose range. Rather, it isclosely linked to the patterns of drug usewithin society. Problems resulting fromirrational drug use, overdoses, polypharmacy and interactions, increasing

use of traditional and herbal medicines withother medicines, illegal sale of medicinesand drugs of abuse over the Internet, increasing self medication practices, substandard medicines, medication errors, lack of efficacy are all within the domain ofpharmacovigilance.

Current national systems need to evolve in

order to address this broad scopeadequately to develop further to meetpublic expectations and the demands ofmodern public health.

Getz Pharma would extend the confidencein the health service in general, ensure thatrisks in drug use are anticipated andmanaged, improve communication betweenthe health care professionals and the publicand educate health care professionals tounderstand the effectiveness or risk ofmedicines that they prescribe. l
