Even the IWB Reps Have a Hard Time Getting Smart about Using IWBs

• Even those who promote the use of interactive whiteboards have a hard time showing how they can be used effectively.

• Most of the photos in this compilation were taken from an ISTE presentation sponsored by Smart called “The Role of Interactive Whiteboards in a 1:1 Environment.”

• Use this slide show as a teaching tool for students about what not to do when using IWBs and projectors.

• Here is a guide to read identifying the The Ten No Nos of Teaching with a Projector or Interactive Whiteboard

• Identify those you see here.

Get out of the dark. Class is not a place for lights to be out.

Don’t waste costly projector bulbs by leaving an image on the screen that no one is looking at.

No one is looking at the IWB. They don’t need an image left on the screen, they can call it up on their laptops.

The big wigs are here to impart their knowledge. But they all have their backs to the students.

Why use an IWB with a laptop in your hand? Just use the laptop and projector and face your audience!

Do these students look engaged as a result of the IWB?

Page 6: Getting Smart About Interactive Whiteboards (Smartboards, Promethean Boards)

Don’t handwrite a number in excel just because your IWB has no keyboard! Type in cells from the laptop so that you can see the magic of excel’s formulas.

Does the rest of the class really have to sit around while these students stand blocking the board chatting? Is this the most effective use of time?

Or, if this is just a center, why do they need to be up at the huge board writing instead of typing in excel?

The class stares and looks at this student’s back while she’s blocking and maybe talking to the board…not the class.
