Defining the Perspective

• Common Core State Standards (CCSS)“…define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education experiences so that they will graduate high school to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs…”

• Adopted in CT in July 2010: full implementation mandated for the 2013-2014 school year

• 48/50 states and 4/6 U.S. territories in current compliance: others to follow

What about Preschool-Age Children?

• Early Childhood Education Cabinet: a Birth-to-Age 5 Initiative for Connecticut

• CT Preschool Curriculum Framework (PCF)• Preschool Assessment Frameworks (PAF)• Prekindergarten Grade Level Expectations

(GLEs) in English Language Arts and Math: already aligned with Kindergarten CCSS

Parents and other special adults are the first teachers of children.

2. Recognition and naming of letters and their sounds in context.(Note: Recognizing and naming ALL upper and lower case letters is now a requirement in the Kindergarten CCSS, and was previously a Pre-K grade level expectation.)

• Hold book right way up.• Read/Explore left to right.• Turn pages in sequence.• “Study” the pictures.• Know that pictures make up a story.• Know that words make up a story.• Recognize familiar letters and

words.
