Next month,

Broadway will celebrate

60 years of ministry to

the members of our

congregation, to the

Columbia community

and to the world. Such a

big milestone deserves a

big party—and the

Anniversary Committee

has designated October

as our Heritage Month.

Heritage Month will

begin Homecoming

Sunday on October 7.

There will be one

worship service at 10:30

a.m. in the Christian Life Center. Our special guests will

be Bill a Ryan, Broadway’s founding pastor and his wife,

Narka. The Ryans served Broadway for its first ten

years, and we are blessed to have them join us for this

special day! Following the service, we will celebrate, in

the Disciples tradition, with a potluck lunch. Dixie Fisher

is asking for volunteers to prepare recipes from our 50th

Anniversary Cookbook. You will find sign-ups in the

Narthex, or simply call Dixie at 474.3417.

Following Homecoming Sunday’s worship, we will

celebrate each Sunday in October with past and present

Broadway ministers. On Sunday, October 14, Rev. Don

Lanier will lead us in our three worship services. Don

and his wife, Alice Jane, served Broadway in the 1970s

to the early 1980s. On Sunday, October 21, Pastors

Nick Larson and Jacob Thorne will lead us in worship.

Jacob was Broadway’s

Associate Minister in the

early 2000s. We will close

the month on Sunday,

October 28, with worship

led by Rick Frost and Kim

Ryan. Rick has been

Broadway’s longest serving

Senior Minister, spending

22 years as Broadway’s

Senior Minister. Kim

served alongside Rick as

an Associate Minister for

20 years!

The Anniversary

Committee will also be

updating our Broadway

history with events from the last deaden of ministry.

Look for special posters and a historical timeline

highlighting important events from 2007 till now!

We will be signing our favorite hymns, wearing our

new Broadway shirts (see page three) and enjoying our

Heritage Month as we take a fond look back and a

faithful leap forward together!

Getting Ready to Celebrate A Really BIG Birthday!

Charter Member Glenn Geiger at an early Chicken Barbecue.

Today, you will find Glenn riding the Broadway Bus to attend

worship almost every week!

,Dear Broadwayites,

September marks a time when Broadway gets into more

of a routine. Summer travels have brought back waters from

distant places to co-mingle this Sunday. Sunday School

classes are meeting regularly again, and friends we meet in

the hall have been missed for a while. It is a time of

regrouping and growth.

Did you notice that last year Broadway served God by

providing $156,306.71 to support mission work? Our

Missions and Outreach Ministry’s budget was $87,473 of the

total, which represents a tithe of our total income. You

responded on top of this to hurricane relief, homeless,

hunger, support groups, refugees, and others through

separate donations out of your compassion. Thank you!

October will be Heritage Month, a time to enjoy glimpses

of Broadway Christian Church past and dream of the future.

October 7 will treat us several ways: Bill Ryan (pastor in

1958) will give the sermon in a combined worship paralleling

the first service of the 100 persons who started Broadway.

Then a carry-in dinner, using many of the recipes found in

the cookbook from our 50th anniversary, promises to be a

real Taste of Broadway. You hopefully voted for your top

ten hymns from the list that was circulated, and we will sing

one verse of those hitting the Top Ten chart. October 14 will

hear the voice of “The Church Today” program, aka Don

Lanier in the pulpit all three services. Rick Frost and Kim

Ryan are joining forces again on October 28, when they will

also officiate in all three worships. We will also celebrate the

Timothys and Priscillas that worshiped with us until they took

on roles in the clergy on their own.

Our Interim Minister Search Committee is in place and

ready to begin the process to call. Some ask why not

search and call our next Senior Minister? Routine is a facet

of worship that we, as individuals, hold dear to each of us in

following and hearing God. We become comfortable with a

certain voice and mannerism in our worship that upon a

change, seems almost heretical. After eight years with one

lead minister’s style, it is important that we take time to be

able to adjust to other styles of delivery. Meanwhile, we will

continue to enjoy Nick and Terry among other voices from

the pulpit.

I continue to give thanks for each of you as we have

gone through the departure of our senior minister these past

weeks. A cohesive spirit of concern, compassion and yet

ambition for our congregation is evident in each person and

group I visited. We experience a loss of Tim and Kathy from

our midst yet have confidence that we will grow and be

stronger. Actions taken by our Executive Committee and

Board were done without malice, and I believe in accord with

our denomination and basic beliefs. That spirit will lead us

to greater things as part of the body of Christ in our world.

Thank you for serving and celebrating God together,

John Poehlmann

Gracious God

Sixty years ago where we are now sitting you saw a

pasture that had the opportunity to become a larger

expression of your love. Through these years you have

guided us and touched so many souls enabling the ability

for our congregation to be a part of your hands in our

community.

Sixty years, or time and half what the Israelites

journeyed in the wilderness. You are our guide through

joys and tears; triumphs and corrections. We have come

before your throne in each other’s prayers for which we

give special thanks.

And now we pray for strength and healing in this time

of transition; for our members who are hurt, for our

friends, for Tim, Kathy, Bertha & Savannah. Lead us into

tomorrow’s promise and help us see how we can best

serve you.

Guide us that our thoughts would reflect your wisdom,

our dreams might reflect your vision for us and our actions

incorporate the peace and power that only you can offer.

We ask this in Jesus name, whom you sent to show us

how to serve and celebrate our God in all times and

places. Amen

Show Your Broadway Spirit With Our New Shirts!

There hasn’t been a

new Broadway logoed shirt

since we celebrated our last

big birthday! But for our

60th celebration, we wanted

to have a shirt design that

would last for a while, especially if we wait another 10

years between shirt orders!

The Anniversary Committee came up with a

design that notes our big 6-0, but can still be worn

throughout the next decade. We will place our shirt

order on September 16, so please check your church

mailboxes for the order form. We ask that your

payment accompany your order.

The shirts will be sized much

as our recent Habitat Sale

shirts. There are four choices

on the form; a short-sleeve t-

shirt, a long-sleeved t-shirt, a

crew neck sweatshirt, and,

NEW—a full front zippered hoodie with the logo on

the back. All shirts and sweatshirts will be navy.

Prices range from $10 for the t-shirt to $20 for the

hooded sweatshirt.

So get into the spirit of our anniversary celebration

and show your Broadway Spirit to the world!

Remember, orders are due by Sunday, September

16.

Don Harter returned from

his summer-long bike ride just

in time to begin recruiting for

the 2018 CROP hunger Walk

on Sunday, September 23!

You will find Don just

outside the Narthex on Sunday

morning. He can give you a lot

of information about the CROP

Walk and the important work

done by Church World Services to mitigate hunger

around the globe. Locally, 25% of all funds raised will

be used to support Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen,

the Russell Chapel Food Pantry, The Latter House

Food Pantry, Fifth Street Christian Church’s Feed the

Community program and the Columbia Center for

Urban Agriculture!

Walkers can also invite their friends to support

them, whether those friends are next door or across

the country! Online registration allows walkers to

include friends around the world in

our Columbia CROP Walk! In fact,

last year’s top fundraiser was our

own Jane McGuire, who raised

almost all of her donation using

the online donor page!

Once again, Mission and

Outreach Ministry will provide hot

dogs, chips and melon for a pre-

Walk lunch at 12:30 p.m. Thank

you to the Shigaki-Hull family for serving as our grill

masters!

The Walk will take place at Stephens Lake Park,

with a long and short course available. Walkers will

use the paved sidewalks for the Walk path, so the

Walk is very stroller and wheelchair friendly.

Stop by and register to walk with Don Harter

through September 23—and we will see you at

Stephens lake!

The Work of Our

Hands Table is just

that—crafted items ,

baked goods and even

garden bulbs, donated

and crafted by

Broadway members.

The items on the Work

of Our Hands Table

are sold, and all

proceeds are used to

purchase supplies for

Church World Services

Hygiene and School

kits. These kits may be used in Missouri, or may be

shipped to another continent—the kits go wherever they

are needed around the world.

On this year’s Table, you can expect to see items

crafted by Belinda Davis, counted cross stitch items,

crocheted and knitted

scarves and hats and

much more. The prices

are very reasonable, and

many of the items on the

Table would make perfect

gifts for family and friends.

If you would like to

donated some of your own

handiwork to the Table,

donations are always

welcome! The Table will

stay up in Fellowship Hall

every Sunday until mid-

October. Be sure to visit the Fellowship hall beginning

next Sunday. The Table will open before the 9:00 service

and remain open until 11:15 a.m.

On August 8, Mission and

Outreach Ministry volunteers

provided a delicious

breakfast to get our friends at

the Early Learning Center-

North off to a good start to

the school year! It was the

first staff day back for many

of the ELC teachers, and

more than 80 enjoyed breakfast from Broadway.

Food is something we do very well here at Broadway,

but there is more we can do to help the staff and students

at the Early Learning Center. We are continuing to collect

nonperishable food items, paper products and cleaning

supplies for the school’s Parent Pantry.

We will be distributing Scholastic Book order forms for

preschool level readers in September. The orders will be

placed through the Carousel Preschool, so this will be a

win for Carousel (free supplies and books from Scholastic)

and a win for the Early Learning Center

(new books for the school’s Book Box).

Check your Broadway Weekly e-news

for ordering information.

Collecting Box Tops for

Education

A recent addition to our

PIE took lit is the collection of Box Tops

for Education. If you are no longer sending your box tops

to your child’s school, but are still enjoying your Cheerios

every morning—that cereal box will have at least one Box

Top for Education (usually on the top or bottom). Simply

tear it off and bring it to the collection box in Fellowship

Hall. The Box Tops can be redeemed for a variety of

building needs.

Mission and Outreach Ministry is planning more ways

we can assist our Partners in Education, and we will need

your help—stay tuned!

Executive Committee, are

sponsoring a voter registration at Broadway on the

following Sundays, September 16, 23 and 30.

Broadway will provide the opportunity for anyone

whom would like to get registered or update their

voter registration to do so.

Sunday School participants will be in the

Fellowship Hall to assist with registrations.

Summers in Columbia often seem to

begin slowly and end quickly! Summer

school, summer travel, summer days to

be lazy—all of us are going in a hundred

different direction. Broadway welcomed

August with a flurry of activity and

fellowship, and looking forward to our

special birthday in the fall!

CareLink volunteers marked their second year with a

barbeque at the Poehlmann's home last week. The skies

cleared and 41 people arrived just in time for hot brats and

burgers. It was a time of celebrating 10 different CareLink

ministries and over 120 volunteers who provide loving

care for our church family.

Can you name all 10? Here's a hint: ♥ Cards ♥ Calls
