Beaker

Used for: collecting, mixing and heating chemicals

Page 4: Getting into Gear What’s what in the Science lab!

Conical Flask

Used to:

Collect filtered liquids and to hold liquids that need swirling to mix.

Test-tube

• A Test tube is used to mix and/or heat small amounts of solids and liquids. It holds about 10mL.

Boiling Tube

• A Boiling tube is used to heat small volumes of liquids to boiling. It holds about 30mL.

Filter Funnel

Used to separate solids from liquids and to pour liquids.

Evaporating dish

Used to evaporate a liquid by heating over a Bunsen.

• Used to support beakers and other apparatus (gear) for heating.

• Use:• Placed on tripod to

Use: To handle hot equipment.

Use: protects bench from hot objects, is placed under the Bunsen.

a suitable height (used with boss and clamp).

Use: Securely holds apparatus to the retort and clamp stand.

Use: to provide the heat needed for many experiements
