Thyroid problems can cause weight gain for most. Thyroid problems can cause weight gain for most. Thyroid problems can cause weight gain for most. Thyroid problems can cause weight gain for most. So what's the answer to So what's the answer to So what's the answer to So what's the answer to your weight loss woes? your weight loss woes? your weight loss woes? your weight loss woes? Good health and weight — that’s right for our body frame — needs go hand-in-hand. In my experience, as a stress and lifestyle coach, I've learned that trying to lose weight is a waste of time unless you a) have a plan that helps you think differently about eating and exercise, but more importantly, b) see weight loss as health gain first, and c) see your health gain as a lifestyle change, not a quick fix “and then I can go back to eating what I want and ‘the old way’ again.”

Changing our beliefs, habits and patterns about food and eating is crucial to thyroid health and to Getting Your Life Back!

“Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon.”

THE MEANING OF NUTRITIONTHE MEANING OF NUTRITIONTHE MEANING OF NUTRITIONTHE MEANING OF NUTRITION The meaning of nutrition is not just a matter of diet. Technically, the meaning of nutrition is that it is an investment in yourself for your present and long future. If you put the right things in your body you can help your body promote physical health and fitness and prevent illness.

Our Diet is SOur Diet is SOur Diet is SOur Diet is S....AAAA....DDDD.... and is Killing Us: “Standard American Diet”and is Killing Us: “Standard American Diet”and is Killing Us: “Standard American Diet”and is Killing Us: “Standard American Diet”

For the decades Americans have been eating the S.A.D. Diet (Standard American Diet) and sharing it with the rest of the world, we have increased disease, allergies, food intolerance, various symptoms and body pain, weight gain and obesity, brain impairment and conception and birth problems into the millions.

Our bodies have over 50 trillion cells all communicating with one another to help us to survive. They will communicate even better and help us thrive if we do our part by feeding them the best fuel available. And so, that means educating ourselves on the foods that support our physical body’s the best.

GET YOUR HEALTH BACK! FOOD-HEALTH KNOWLEDGE 101 Here I will cover the basics about the foods we eat and why they’re in turn creating problems for our best health in a myriad of ways. Knowledge is power, and using this knowledge will give you back a powerful body and mind! Food-Health Knowledge 101 covers:

1. The digestive system 2. Inflammation 3. Preservatives, additives and food dyes 4. MSG 5. Gluten, gluten sensitivity and intolerance 6. Leaky gut and small intestine 7. Food Sensitivities: Processed and Refined Foods 8. Food cravings 9. GMO /GEO Foods 10. Endocrine and hormone disruptors 11. Immune system health 12. Adrenal Fatigue 13. Sweeteners 14. Milk and dairy 15. Red meat, fowl, eggs and fish 16. Brain health

EAT A CLEAN DIET FOR A HEALTHY DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

The Chinese define the digestive system as the key to life. Without proper function of the digestive tract the body is unable to absorb nutrients into the blood stream thus sustaining life to the individual cells, all 50 trillion. Certain foods “dampen” the body’s ability to move or circulate energy. Wheat, sugar and

even some raw foods are difficult and/or inefficient for the digestive system to break down and circulate throughout the body. Man made sweeteners, chemicals, additives and preservatives not only affect the digestive process but confuse the natural receptors in the body creating a set up for symptoms, disease and autoimmune diseases. The SAD diet is heavy on red meat, pork, foods made from dairy or cow's milk, processed foods laced with dangerous chemical preservatives, colorings, vitamins and flavor enhancers. The Standard American Diet is also made up of fried foods, foods cooked with high heat and microwaved foods, foods make with white refined sugar and flour or more and more today foods that contain high fructose corn syrup to name only a few items and a few problems with the SAD diet. It contains insufficient quantity and variety of fresh fruits and vegetables but includes all kinds of fruit and vegetable juices whose nutritional value is destroyed by pasteurization... treatment with high heat that destroys all enzymes and most nutrients. Not to mention how many of these juices contain large amounts of added sugar, high fructose corn syrup or dangerous artificial chemical sweeteners and preservatives. If you eat the Standard American Diet your body will be using up to 80 percent of its daily energy supply to digest that food. You read that right, up to 80 percent. It goes without saying that we have to shake ourselves awake, stop depending on the government, doctors and others to tell us what we really know already, and take charge of our personal nutritional plans in order to feel and be healthier longer. That means eating a “clean diet.”

Eating a Clean Diet Eating a “clean diet” means eating foods that are raw, whole, fresh, local and as organic as possible. Foods that are unprocessed, unrefined, un-fortified with no preservatives or additives. And, now that millions (88 million Americans) have problems with gluten and additives, big problems, eating a clean diet means a whole lot more. But this report is about diving in deep to really get the big picture of what we’re doing that is damaging our health through nutrition. Let’s start with inflammation.

Inflammation Inflammation is the natural process by which the body’s white blood cells and other bio-chemicals protect us from infection and foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses. If you sprain your ankle and it becomes “inflamed” that’s a good thing. It’s ramping up its internal mechanisms to support the spot that is injured and to help bring it back to health. However, when something you eat causes inflammation, like gluten or sugar, additives and preservatives or other manmade chemicals in your food, it is an overall confusion to your body’s natural functioning, causing it to become inflamed, go haywire and attack itself, creating illness, and specifically autoimmune diseases like arthritis.

Conditions characterized by excessive inflammation:

• Heart disease

• Alzheimer’s disease

• Cancer

• Obesity

• Diabetes

• Arthritis

• Prostate disease

• Even our crow's feet and laugh lines are due to an inflammatory process in the skin!

A good and easy example of inflammation is food sensitivities causing esophageal (acid) reflux. Not changing one’s diet to clean foods can cause an allergic response in the stomach, producing an area of inflammation in the stomach wall causing lesions or sores in the stomach lining as well as potentially destroying the parietal cells. The reduced number of parietal cells results in less acid production ultimately inhibiting the proper breakdown of food in the stomach. When food is improperly broken down in the stomach large undigested particles are transported to the intestines where they cause additional inflammation and allergic responses as well as increasing the severity of symptoms that are already being experienced. Here is a great two part article on inflammation: http://nutrition.about.com/od/dietsformedicaldisorders/a/antiinflamfood.htm http://www.inflammationfactor.com/ Book: The Inflammation Free Diet Plan by Monica Reinagel

CHEMICALS IN OUR FOOD THROUGH AIR, SOIL AND WATER There are over 60,000 chemicals to which we risk daily exposure through air, water and soil that finds it way naturally into our food supply. What is not natural is that humans put most of them there and then pay for them, and then pay again (and again) for the medical care for the health problems they cause. Pretty crazy! There are over 14,000 man-made chemicals added to our American food supply today. Food additives are not natural nutrition for humans or their pets. Children are suffering the most from food additives because they are exposed to food chemicals from infancy, and human bodies were not meant to be exposed to the degree of chemicals and food additives that we are currently.

Yes, there are chemicals and so much good science, but too much has gone unchecked and greed has created Frankenstein’s of a lot of our food supply. Here is an overview.

Preservatives, Additives and Food Dyes Reports of food intolerance reactions to food preservatives, additives and food dyes have been widely published. Carefully reading food labels is one way you can try to avoid some of the food preservatives and additives to which they may be sensitive, however, when ingredients are present in very small amounts they are often not declared on the label. A better way to avoid potential toxins is to eat fresh, organically grown foods. Read the label, example: I bought a container of Lemon Pepper Seasoning at a dollar type store, great deal, right! I’ve been using it for a while and didn’t think to read the label. Here’s what it says: INGREDIENTS: Salt, wheat semolina, sugar, spices, citric acid, dehydrated vegetables (garlic, onion) cornstarch, canola oil, monosodium glutamate, spice and coloring, silicon dioxide (anticaking agent), natural flavor (soybean oil, BHA, BHT). Whew! So, wheat = gluten, and monosodium glutamate (MSG) = bad news. Rrrrr! BHA and BHT are antioxidants used as food preservatives (not the good kind of antioxidants.) BHA is generally used to keep fats from becoming rancid. It is also used as a yeast de-foaming agent. BHA is found in butter, meats, cereals, chewing gum, baked goods, snack foods, dehydrated potatoes, and beer. It is also found in animal feed, food packaging, cosmetics, rubber products, and petroleum products. BHT also prevents oxidative rancidity of fats. It is used to preserve food odor, color, and flavor. Many packaging materials incorporate BHT. It is also added directly to shortening, cereals, and other foods containing fats and oils. More on BHA and BHT: http://chemistry.about.com/od/foodcookingchemistry/a/bha-bht-preservatives.htm

MSG Sensitivity Monosodium glutamate is the flavor enhancer used in Asian/Chinese cuisines. The average person living in an industrialized country consumes about 0.3 to 1.0 gram of MSG per day without knowing it. MSG is classified by the US Food and Drug Administration as "generally recognized as safe." It is a white crystalline substance resembles sugar and salt. MSG does not have any distinct taste but it stimulates the taste buds to make our taste better for the food we are going to intake. Certain foods like Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Hydrolyzed Plant Protein, Textured Protein (Including TVP) are certain foods that definitely contain MSG. Sometimes in the list of ingredients it is mentioned under other names. MSG sensitivity is a set of symptoms that may occur in some people after they consume monosodium glutamate (MSG): from numbness at the back of the neck radiating to arms and the back, general weakness and palpitations, to rashes and feeling ill, swelling in joints, hands and feet and fatigue. If in doubt, and in an Asian restaurant for sure, ask if there is MSG in your choice and if you can order it without (and hope it is).

GLUTEN–WE LOVE OUR GLUTEN!

Gluten is wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt, kamut and triticale. Gluten is not one single substance, but actually a varying mixture of substances. If wheat flour is used to make dough, and the dough is washed in water until all water-soluble components and starch is rinsed off, the remaining gummy yellowish-gray material consisting of proteins, carbohydrates, fats and

minerals is called "gluten". About 80% of the gluten material is composed of proteins, and about

20% is composed of carbohydrates, fats, and minerals. About 400,000 tons of gluten is produced in the United States each year from about 5 million tons of wheat.

Gluten Sensitivity and intolerance: One Cause, Many Symptoms and Diseases Gluten sensitivity and intolerance are actually autoimmune diseases that create inflammation throughout the body, with wide-ranging effects across all organ systems including your brain, heart, joints, digestive tract, and more. It can be the single cause behind many different "diseases." To correct these diseases, you need to treat the cause–which is often gluten sensitivity–not just the symptoms. A review paper in The New England Journal of Medicine listed 55 "diseases" that can be caused by eating gluten. These include osteoporosis, irritable bowel disease, Celiac, Crohn’s and Hashimoto’s Disease, inflammatory bowel disease, anemia, cancer, fatigue, canker sores, and rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Multiple Sclerosis. Grains today contain approximately 90% more gluten then they had only one century ago. Gluten is also linked to many psychiatric and neurological diseases, including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, dementia, migraines, epilepsy, and neuropathy (nerve damage). It has also been linked to autism. To read more on Gluten Sensitivity, see: http://gluten-intolerance-symptoms.com/

Celiac Disease If you have Celiac Disease–individuals with problems absorbing nutrients and these problems are made much worse by consuming gluten-containing foods–you must literally stay as far away from anything containing gluten as you can to not have a serious reaction. If you don’t have Celiac but still are seeking a clean diet and gluten free, you need to check labels on everything. See www.celiac.com for a complete list of foods that contain gluten, as well as hidden sources of gluten. Hidden sources include soup mixes, salad dressings, sauces, as well as lipstick, certain vitamins, medications, stamps and envelopes you have to lick, and even Play-Doh®.

HOW DO THESE FOODS DAMAGE MY BODY? Our bodies were not built to digest and metabolize manmade additives and chemicals and the stripping down and tailoring of natural foods. They confuse our cells and system creating more problems than just “a little stomach ache” or “gas” or “headaches.” The role of your gastrointestinal tract, which includes your esophageal area, stomach, and your upper and lower intestinal tracts, is to take in the food you eat, break it down to molecule-

size pieces, and have it absorbed into your body in a controlled way. Your gastrointestinal tract provides a protective barrier between the food you eat and the inside of your body, and when it is healthy and functioning efficiently, it lets in specific food molecules in specific places at specific times. Many things can affect this barrier and, when it is compromised in any way, it can let in food molecules that are not properly digested. This can cause a reaction to a food, not because you are sensitive to it, but because it is in the wrong place at the wrong time. These additives and such also confuse one’s body into attacking itself, creating autoimmune diseases; more on this later. For illustrations and an in-depth article on this subject, see http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=faq&dbid=30

Leaky Gut Leaky gut syndrome (also called increased intestinal permeability), is the result of damage to the intestinal lining, making it less able to protect the internal environment as well as to filter needed nutrients and other

Page 7: Get Your Life Back! - Thyroid Uthyroidu.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/GYLB-Module2...• Adrenal Fatigue • Sleep, Nutrition, Brain and Adrenal Health • Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners

7

biological substances. As a consequence, some bacteria and their toxins, incompletely digested proteins and fats, and waste not normally absorbed may "leak" out of the intestines into the blood stream. This

triggers an autoimmune reaction, which can lead to gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal bloating, excessive gas and cramps, fatigue, food sensitivities, joint pain, skin rashes, and autoimmunity. The cause of this syndrome may be chronic inflammation, food sensitivity, damage from taking large amounts of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), cytotoxic drugs and radiation or certain antibiotics, excessive alcohol consumption, or compromised immunity. Leaky gut syndrome may trigger or worsen such disorders as chronic fatigue syndromes, Crohn's disease, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and asthma. My father had leaky gut, colitis, Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis, all of which immensely altered his ability to enjoy life for over 45 of his 77 years, and all of us, his family too. http://www.mdheal.org/leakygut.htm

Food Sensitivities: Processed and Refined Foods Processed foods, like white flour and sugar, need relatively no digestion time. They’re absorbed rapidly into your system flooding your blood and cells with glucose. Internal alarms start ringing–your body knows high blood sugar is extremely dangerous–your glands send insulin to the rescue to deal with the catastrophic flood of glucose. Insulin basically turns the glucose into fat to get it out of your blood. Processed foods are also unhealthy for us because they contain higher levels of additives such as preservatives (benzoate-containing substances like sodium benzoate, sulfites, hydroxytoluene-containing substances like BHT), flavoring agents (salicylates), and dyes. Processed, non-organically grown foods may also contain pesticides which can also promote toxic responses in the body. Candies, such as chocolates, also contain many colorings, additives and preservatives as well as simple sugars. Processed foods also add colors and flavorings which raise additional concerns. Colors, and particularly flavorings, are usually produced with "carrier" ingredients. In the past, manufacturers have been required to only list the main ingredients in the products and carrier ingredients were not included on this list. http://bodyecology.com/articles/hidden_dangers_of_processed_foods.php Refined food is probably one of the biggest culprits when it comes to unhealthy food. When food is refined– whole, raw, pure, real food stripped of its “roughness”–it loses much of the nutritional value and dietary necessities present in its whole food state. It also oxidizes, and oxidized food is unhealthy food. http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art5688.asp http://www.allergy-details.com/food-allergy/unhealthy-food/

WHY DO I CRAVE FOODS TO WHICH I AM SENSITIVE?–Antibodies and Antigens Some researchers suggest that our bodies can become addicted to the chemical messengers such as histamine or cortisol which are secreted by immune cells in response to allergens in the body. It is hypothesized that while eating foods to which you are allergic can cause a rash or sneezing, the body also may experiences a soothing response from the presence of the chemical messengers increasing the desire to eat more of that food.

According to a recent New York Times article, “Americans eat 31 percent more packaged food than fresh food, and they consume more packaged food per person than their counterparts in nearly all other countries. A sizable part of the American diet is ready-to-eat meals, like frozen pizzas and microwave dinners, and sweet or salty snack foods.” Because processed food is so high in sugar, fat and salt, it is a major contributor to our obesity epidemic and the related epidemics of type 2 diabetes and other chronic

diseases.

Another theory proposed by a well-known immunologist is based on the science of how antibodies and antigens connect (bind) to each other. Antibodies can bind to more than one site on an allergen in the food, therefore, when there is very little antigen but a large number of antibodies present, the antibodies will become cross-linked and make large complexes. It is theorized that these large complexes can cause an increase in symptoms. In this theory symptoms are related to a large number of antibodies in relation to antigens rather than being caused by the number of antigens. In fact, it is suggested that if you eat more of the antigen, you can decrease the number of antibody complexes by allowing each antibody to bind to an antigen rather than forming the large complexes thereby reducing the number of symptoms. Normal metabolism works to remove the food antigens and as the ratio of antibodies to antigens begins to

rise, symptoms will begin to increase. Craving and addiction to food may be the result of the body's

attempt to increase the number of antigens present and preventing the formation of the large antibody complexes that are associated with an increased number of symptoms.

Pesticides and Toxins in Our Food Supply Their mass introduction into farming 70 years ago, along with petrochemically-derived fertilizers, set U.S. farming down a costly and unsustainable path. Pesticides and toxins on our plate cause:

• Nervous system disorders

• Immune system suppression

• Breast and other types of cancer

• Reproductive damage

• Disruption of hormonal systems

• Autoimmune Diseases

• A wide range of symptoms that have become “normal” in the American way of life.

http://living.amuchbetterway.com/environmental-toxins-in-our-food-supply/ http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/10/08/a-pesticide-factory-in-your-stomach-think-corn-chips.aspx

GMO or GEO Food In the US market now, an alarming 60 to 70% of the processed foods are genetically modified. GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) or GEO (Genetically Engineered Organisms) lead by Monsanto is the process and product that scientists have been creating, and Monsanto Seed Company is at the helm, spreading them around the world. This is the process of introducing genetic material into organisms to alter, create and affect changes in living plants and animals. These radical changes scientists are developing create specific, desirable traits that might never evolve naturally and are being found to be harmful to humans and animals. These laced-in materials, usually pesticides and fertilizers confuse your body disrupting the endocrine system, hormones, antibodies and more, creating chronic illness, pain, endocrine and immune system disorders and autoimmune diseases, now numbering over 100. Buy only foods that are GMO-free. http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/genetically-modified-foods.html http://www.raw-wisdom.com/50harmful Make your voice heard, vote no: http://www.saynotogmos.org/

Endocrine and Hormone Disruptors Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that may interfere with the body’s endocrine system and produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife. When our endocrine system is compromised and hormones are confused by incoming man-made additives, chemicals and pesticides, our body gets confused and starts attacking itself in the mixed up overload of input. Thus causing autoimmune disease and illness of all kinds.

Immune System Health When your body encounters a germ, its first line of defense is your immune system. A healthy immune system helps the body defend against various microbes, pollutants and parasites. Specialized cells and organs help your body recognize and respond to foreign invaders. Your immune system even has its own circulatory system, called the lymphatic system. An impaired immune system is called immunocompromise and can leave the body vulnerable to various

viral, bacterial, or fungal opportunistic infections. Immune deficiency diseases are disorders in which your resistance to disease becomes dangerously low. Causes of immune deficiency can include various illnesses such as viruses, chronic illness, or immune system illnesses (especially AIDS) and the chemicals and addictives in our food system directly or by causing these illnesses. What is AIDS? A person is diagnosed with AIDS when their immune system is too weak to fight off infections. Pretty simple to understand after reading this information. The other type of immune disorder involves an over-active immune response. There are several different classes of diseases from an excessive response by the immune system:

• Allergies - a true allergy to a substance or food is caused by the immune response.

• Asthma - caused by an allergic reaction affecting the airway passages.

• Anaphylaxis - an extremely dangerous over-reaction that can lead to shock

• Autoimmune diseases - a group of more than 100 diseases where the body's own immune system gets confused and starts to attack good body cells by mistake.

See GYLB FORM: AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE: FAMILY TREE CHECKLIST. Read more at http://www.buzzle.com/articles/immune-system-diseases-list-of-immune-system-disorders.html

Adrenal Fatigue Your two adrenal glands are small, triangular-shaped endocrine glands located on the top of each kidney. As such they are part of your compromised endocrine system disrupted by food toxins. Adrenal fatigue is caused by the lack of foods we eat, not enough of the right foods like vegetables and the foods we eat that are contaminated with toxins. Adrenal fatigue is a collection of signs and symptoms, known as a "syndrome” that results when the adrenal glands function below the necessary level. Most commonly associated with intense or prolonged stress, it can also arise during or after acute or chronic infections, especially respiratory infections such as influenza, bronchitis or pneumonia. You may look and act relatively normal with adrenal fatigue and may not have any obvious signs of physical illness, yet you live with a general sense of unwellness, tiredness or "gray" feelings. People suffering from adrenal fatigue often have to use coffee, colas and other stimulants to get going in the morning and to prop themselves up during the day. http://www.adrenalfatigue.org/

GET ENOUGH SLEEP Studies show that people who get less than 7-9 hours of sleep a night are more likely to have problems involved in mental disorders, including depression, schizophrenia,

Page 10: Get Your Life Back! - Thyroid Uthyroidu.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/GYLB-Module2...• Adrenal Fatigue • Sleep, Nutrition, Brain and Adrenal Health • Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners

Alzheimer's disease, stroke, as well as head injury. And symptoms are strongly influenced by the amount of sleep a person gets. Difficulties may arise from the drugs used to control symptoms of a disorder, or from changes in the brain regions and neurotransmitters that control sleep. Neuroscientists studies show that sleep is not only crucial to brain development, but is also necessary to help consolidate the effects of waking experience — by converting memory into more permanent and/or enhanced forms. So, if a person has no real reason to not get enough sleep - no mental disorder or brain damage to begin with - then pre-planning ones day to GET ENOUGH SLEEP is a must!

The Thyroid Diet Will Help You Sleep Eating a clean diet will help detox your body of foods and chemicals that keep you up at night. You’ll sleep better and lesson brain fog that is linked to not enough REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, necessary to function at our best.

Adequate sleep is crucial to proper brain function Sleep is no less crucial than air, water, and food to our systems.

Any amount of sleep deprivation will diminish mental performance, cautions Mark Mahowald, a professor of neurology at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

"One complete night of sleep deprivation is as impairing in simulated driving tests as a legally intoxicating blood-alcohol level."

At the American Diabetes Association's annual meeting in June 2001, Eve Van Cauter, Ph.D., reported that people who regularly do not get enough sleep can become less sensitive to insulin. This increases their risk for diabetes and high blood pressure — both serious threats to the brain.

Hypoglycemia, Low Blood Sugar and Sleep If you already have hypoglycemia and low blood sugar problems, lack of sleep will make your ability to focus, think, remember (get “brain fog”), problem solve and function all the worse. For example, short sleep duration is linked with: • Increased risk of motor vehicle accidents • Increase in body mass index — a greater likelihood of obesity due to an increased appetite caused by sleep deprivation • Increased risk of diabetes and heart problems • Increased risk for psychiatric conditions including depression and substance abuse • Decreased ability to pay attention, react to signals or remember new information

Aging and Lack of Sleep Previous work by Dr. Van Cauter, a professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, found that

"metabolic and endocrine changes resulting from a significant sleep debt mimic many of the hallmarks of aging. It is suspected that chronic sleep loss may not only hasten the onset but could also increase the severity of age-related ailments such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and memory loss.

SWEETENERS Sugar: One tablespoon of sugar dampens the immune system for up to one hour. The average person on the S.A.D. DIET consumes up to 185 pounds of sugar each year. Doing a little math on this it means that the average person lives 65% of the year with a compromised immune system. Sadly, our culture has grown (in more ways than one!) to think that this is “normal!”

Artificial Sweeteners: Many of the artificial sweeteners in so much our packaged and processed foods and snacks today are made from sugar alcohols, naturally found in plants. However, when processed to use in foods, the “natural plant base” is morphed, and what we get is a chemical that confuses our body and causes a multitude of problems. Man has created Saccharin, Aspartame, Sucralose, Acesulfame, Neotame and many other sweetners that come in little packets called Sweet’N Low®, NutraSweet® (the NutraSweet industry makes aspartame and sells under name NutraSweet® and Equal®), Splenda®, etc., all which are not real food. Some of the possible side effects that have been claimed of aspartame include:

• Convulsions

• Vision problems

• Headache

• Vomiting, nausea

• Joint aches and pain

High-Fructose Corn Syrup: This is the most common added sweetener in processed foods and beverages, and one of the biggest culprits of the American

obesity problems and directly linked to Type 2 Diabetes. Consumption of beverages containing fructose rose 135 percent between 1977 and 2001 after the introduction of HFCS into our foods, specifically sodas. Food and beverage manufacturers began switching their sweeteners from sucrose (table sugar) to corn syrup in the 1970s when they discovered that HFCS was not only cheaper to make, it was also sweeter, a switch that has drastically altered the American diet. In an important study from the Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers in California recruited volunteers to drink a glass of Kool-Aid® with every meal for 10 weeks; half took their soft drinks sweetened with fructose, the other half with glucose. By the end of the study period, both groups had put on weight, but the

subjects getting fructose had more visceral fat–the kind that adheres to our organs and is associated with heightened risk for atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. The fructose group also showed higher levels of LDL cholesterol and lower insulin sensitivity. Is Sugar Toxic? “The number one source of calories in the US is high fructose corn syrup. Let me say that in different words so you more fully appreciate the impact of this fact. Remember that fat has 250% more calories than sugar, but even with this major disadvantage, the food that most people get MOST of their calories from is sugar from corn, primarily in the form of soft drinks.” ~ Dr. Joseph Mercola www.Mercola.com

ASPARTAME: A WOLF IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING Don’t be fooled by new names for the same sweetener. In early 2010, with a growing awareness of the dangers of artificial

sweeteners, aspartame producer Ajinomoto rebranded the sweetener

as “AminoSweet”. Sounds pretty healthy, huh?! The artificial sweetener is marketed under various trademark names,

including NutraSweet. It is pervasive and is an ingredient of approximately 6,000 consumer foods and beverages sold worldwide. Aspartame was first introduced into the European food supply over 25 years ago, and has been dogged by health concerns ever since.

MILK AND DAIRY It’s almost unconscionable to think about not drinking cow’s milk, but

reality is, we don’t need cow’s milk for calcium or any other nutrient. We can get these necessary nutrients and vitamins in dark green leafy vegetables, beans, sea weed and other foods, plus Vitamin D is much more important than calcium to support strong bones. Until 10,000 years ago man did not drink animal milk. It is not essential or

necessary to our diet.

The Problem With Cow’s Milk 1. Artificial hormones are added to cows to make them grow faster, stronger and yield more milk. These hormones, other drugs and antibiotics–food they eat with chemicals and addictives–are passed onto us in that glass of milk.

2. Cows also eat grain, if not grass fed. Grain is now all GMO’d, unless organic. You drink the milk that is laced with GMOs.

3. 75% of the world’s population is lactose intolerant. The human body lacks a special digestive enzyme called lactase that is used to help break down the proteins found in cow’s milk. Milk is directly linked to allergies and digestive problems.

Decide for yourself about drinking cow’s milk and eating dairy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O-ehIkwGME&feature=related http://www.preventcancer.com/consumers/general/milk.htm http://www.notmilk.com/kradjian.html

What to do? 1. If you still enjoy milk, buy organic milk, raw organic milk and local organic milk from local dairies. You can also try organic fermented products like yogurt or kefir.

2. Nut milks: I used to love milk. It was hard to think about not drinking it again. But I switched and

now don’t notice it at all. Enjoy alternatives to cow’s milk in the form of nut milks like almond and coconut which are readily available now at usual grocery stores. Soymilk is not a perfect option unless GMO-free, but even then, soy products tend to disturb the American woman’s hormone system.

Go nuts! Make your own nut milk. http://www.welikeitraw.com/rawfood/2008/03/making-nut-milk.html

HORMONES IN COWS MILK A study conducted within the last decade by Dr. Gary Steinberg at Long Island Jewish Medical Center suggests that IGF-

1, the bovine growth

hormone found in cow's milk is responsible for the acceleration of onset puberty in humans, thus making them more susceptible to getting cancer later on in life.

Say Goat Cheeese! But, what about cheese? Cheese can play a minor role in a healthy diet. Just don’t eat processed cheese, go for the aged kinds. Aged cheese is fermented food, so it contains little to no lactose. Cheese offers high-quality fats and proteins as well as many other essential

nutrients. Organic goat cheese is great, hard or feta. Blue cheese and those with mold on them are very good for you. You can also eat raw, nonpasteurized cheese that is loaded with good nutrition.

RED MEAT, FOWL, EGGS AND FISH Like all the above information on milk each of these protein foods can be laced with hormones, antibiotics, mercury in fish and Nitrite and Nitrate Sodium (to preserve meat). While nitrate itself is harmless, it is readily converted to nitrite. When nitrite combines with compounds called secondary amines, it forms nitrosamines, extremely powerful cancer-causing chemicals. The chemical reaction occurs most readily at the high temperatures of frying. Nitrite has long been suspected as being a cause of stomach cancer. Look for nitrite-free processed meats — some of which are frozen, refrigeration reduces the need for nitrites — at some health food and grocery stores. But regardless of the presence of nitrite or nitrosamines, the high-fat, high-sodium content of most processed meats should be enough to discourage you from choosing them. And don't cook with bacon drippings. Mercury Poisoning in Fish Causes:

• fatigue

• headache

• trouble thinking

• tremors

• unsteady gait Bovine growth hormone found in cow's milk–responsible for the acceleration of onset puberty in humans, thus making them more susceptible to getting cancer later on in life–is among those additives used in animals raised for our meat as well. Chickens are injected with estrogen to make them grow faster and we ingest that estrogen. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2002/10/30/biotechnology2.aspx Stop bringing all the unhealthy riders onto your meal plate. Buy organic and local/organic as often as possible. Find organic meats: http://www.eatwellguide.org/i.php?pd=Home

BRAIN HEALTH

Your brain is affected by toxins, pesticides, pollution, food additives, sweeteners, stress and blood sugar surges. Everything I’ve talked about in this report affects your brain’s ability to think, reason, focus, decide, prioritize, function and dream. When your brain is not “fed” the right “fuel” consistently it slows down. The neurotransmitters don’t connect like they should and you lose memory, focus and other “normal” and vital capabilities.

Your brain is mostly fat. And, all fats are not created equal. To function well, your brain needs a good supply of essential fatty acids. Since the body cannot produce these fatty acids, you need to get them from food. Researchers think that these fats not only help supply oxygen to the brain, but work to protect the membranes of brain cells, prevent damage that causes dementia, Alzheimer's and other illnesses.

In order to help your brain function best, increase your intake of essential fatty acids known as omega-3. These fatty acids are found in fish oils, nuts, and seeds. The traditional diet of the Japanese, for example, is high in fish, which explains why the Japanese have one of the longest life expectancies in the world. You can get your fats from fish (wild salmon), nuts (walnuts), olive oil and seeds (flax seed). “Life is not merely to be alive, but to be well.” ~Marcus Valerius Martial

(March 1, between 38 and 41 AD - between 102 and 104 AD) Marcus Valerius Martial was a Latin poet from Hispania (the Iberian Peninsula) best known for

his twelve books of Epigrams, published in Rome between AD 86 and 103, during the reigns of the emperors Domitian, Nerva and Trajan. In these short, witty poems he cheerfully satirizes city life and

the scandalous activities of his acquaintances, and romanticizes his provincial upbringing. He wrote a total of 1,561, of which 1,235 are in elegiac couplets.

He is considered to be the creator of the modern epigram.

The Top 10 Reasons We Don't Lose WeightThe Top 10 Reasons We Don't Lose WeightThe Top 10 Reasons We Don't Lose WeightThe Top 10 Reasons We Don't Lose Weight, Keep i, Keep i, Keep i, Keep it Off ort Off ort Off ort Off or Stay HealthyStay HealthyStay HealthyStay Healthy After each reason are Affirmations and Sentence Completions to fill in.

1. We "DIET" How many diets have you been on looking to find “The one!” the new "magic" solution to eating your way to a thinner self? The problem is, no commercial or conventional diets don’t and can’t work over the long term, at least not for most people. Too many years of believing the ads and programming your brain for “the next great diet” keeps you distracted from the here and now and your health first. When you spend your life on or off of “a diet,” you've adopted a short-term and short-minded approach to healthier eating; one that is almost always impossible to sustain.

To avoid the diet trap:

• Think Health GAIN, not Weight LOSS.

• Stop looking for the magic fix.

• Think Positive Lifestyle CHANGE Program not Weight LOSS or Diet Program.

• When you imagine yourself in the body you’d appreciate even more, don’t think weight first, see yourself healthy, flexible, vibrant and happy first.

Stop the Struggle Permanent health, which will include weight loss for most people, maintenance and lifestyle change, is about gaining the correct knowledge and altering behaviors about nutrition in a way you naturally can maintain, with no struggle for your best health and weight for a lifetime, easily and effortlessly. Affirmation

• I am willing to stop using the word “diet” when I talk about eating.

 Instead of saying “I’m dieting, or I’m on a diet,” I’ll say…

2. We have UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS You know the ads, “I lost 30 pounds in 30 days with….!” That’s insane, irresponsible and just plain stupid! Nobody can lose that amount of weight in that short a time span without jeopardizing their health. (Have you ever seen 99% of these people months and years later? Don’t believe the hype.)

Set a realistic goal for yourself, 1-2 lbs/week and measure your success by each day of what you do that makes you feel healthier, no matter how much weight is lost or gained.

Different Measures of Success Plus, if you’re exercising more you may not see the pounds lost, but you will measure muscle and strength increase, positive self-esteem, you’ll feel healthier and core-stronger, more flexible, taller and more balanced. Affirmation

• I am willing to stop thinking about losing weight fast.

• I enjoy eating the best I can each day for my best health first and new lifestyle.

6. All WORK. No PLAY Constant work and worry stresses your adrenal system. A stressed adrenal system is a fatigued brain and body, sending confusing signals to your brain and body about what it needs for food to keep it moving. It’s easy to reach for foods we crave that tend to be sugary and high calorie “comfort” foods to “keep us going.” These foods only add to the adrenal fatigue.

Play more. Plan your days, weeks and months around a balanced calendar of time to work and time to play; time to work and time to relax–body and brain.

Affirmation

• I’m willing to give my brain and body a rest.

• When I work, I’ll really get things completed so that my brain feels good about it and can let it go.

• I let go of things I can’t change and stop stressing easily and effortlessly.

• When I play, I’ll really enjoy it! And when I relax and rest, I’ll truly enjoy it too.

One way I can play more is…

7. We don’t EXERCISE, or not enough Weight loss cannot be maintained without exercise. Period. But exercising doesn't require you to run a marathon or spend two hours in the gym, it just means doing something physical on most days.

To keep your body flexible, strong and lean, try walking 20-30 minutes each day. Start now. Think “movement” of any kind. Gardening, walking, hiking, heavy housework and stair climbing. Simple measures if you have body pain is to do exercise stretching and movement sitting in an upright hard seat chair. Start and continue movement.

Affirmation

• I know that exercise and movement mean the same thing and I find ways I love to move!

• I enjoy moving my body, what a great body I have to move!

My plan for more movement in my life is…

8. We don’t get enough SLEEP Studies show that people who get less than 7-8 hours of sleep a night hold on weight. If you don’t sleep 7-8 hours every night your body gets confused. It can go into “starvation” mode–feast or famine alerts go off in your brain and organs causing you to actually hold on weight and gain it.

Plan your schedule so that you have 8-9 hours of steady sleep. Shut off the phones, computers and other distractions. Keep your bedroom dark so that you can get good, deep REM sleep helping your body to rejuvenate and repair itself.

Affirmation

• I know my body well and take care of myself with getting enough sleep daily.

9. We are in a Food Advertising and Marketing Consumer Society TRANCE It’s hard to commit to our health when 99% of advertising, commercials and marketing are focused on getting us to eat, drink and get unhealthy. When you hear something long enough, and “everyone else is doing it” you become “spell-bound.” You are in as much of a trance as any character in a fairytale story who encounters the old hag with her poisoned apple. Your thinking, beliefs and behaviors, now patterns and habits and what is “normal” to you are all a spell. Your job is to shake yourself out of the spell. Dispel the lies and propaganda by ads and marketing to make money off your trance and addictions.

Get educated–like you’re doing now! Learn the right road to your best health and don’t be swayed to turn off on any EXIT that will take you back to old thinking or food consumption that you know is not good for you and you know makes you feel bad.

Affirmations

• I know that I can change the mental programming and “trance” I’ve been in.

• I love knowing the truth about healthy food and how my body works best.

One food product that I’ve been hooked on that I know isn’t good for me but I’ve “tranced about” (and I’m willing to stop buying and eating) is…

10. We don't get SUPPORT Don't underestimate the value of support in any health gain and weight loss program. Enlist your family, friends and co-workers–ask for their cooperation in helping you make the best choices for your health reset.

Many people find that they need assistance in adopting and maintaining healthier eating and exercise habits. A lifestyle counselor, personal trainer or weight loss group can provide the information, support and ongoing assistance you may need to reach your specific goals. You’re in a program now, Congratulations!

Affirmation

• Support can look like many things. I know this 6 Week Jumpstart Program is support!

• It’s okay to let others support in the most positive ways.

I’m willing to ask for more support from…
