• The Sahara Desert is the largest tropical climatic desert in the world, covering most of northern Africa.

• The Sahara is rich in metallic minerals such as iron, copper, manganese, tin, nickel, chromium, zinc, lead, cobalt, silver, gold, platinum, thorium, and uranium.

• The daily summer temperatures average to about 90 degrees fairenheight. Parts of the desert have a daytime temperature higher than 110 degrees. Now that’s HOT!!

• The daily temperature in the Sahara averages from 50 to 60 degrees fairenheight. It is extremely hot during the day and cool at night. The average rainfall is about 4 inches. In large areas they receive less than 1 inch a year.

• Years and years ago the Sahara used to have a much wetter climate. Can you believe that after I told you how hot it is. The Sahara even had many lakes and streams. About 1,000 B.C. people came and lived by fishing.

• The Great Sphinx is a major landmark that is located near the Sahara Desert.

• Saguenay River is an important source of water.

• The Sahara extends more than 3,500 miles of northern Africa.
