Fit 2018 SessionsBlock 17:30 – 8:45 am

Ashley Bishop - All About the Intervals

Work, Rest, Repeat in all the different flavours. Learn how to safely and effectively incorporate interval training into your aqua fitness classes. Delve deeper into Tabata, HIIT and other work/rest combinations to take your class (and your participants) to the next level.

Dr. Margie Davenport - Exercise Prescription During Pregnancy: Evidenced-Based Guidelines

Join Dr. Davenport, Director of the Program for Pregnancy and Postpartum Health, as she provides an overview of the physiological adaptations of pregnancy on the body. She will discuss the considerations and potential benefits of exercise during pregnancy, and present current evidence-based guidelines for prenatal exercise prescription.

Suzette O’Byrne - NEW! Corrective Exercise for Older Adult Classes

Older adults come to us with a variety of aches and pains that can be exacerbated by mobility issues. This workshop will focus on corrective exercises that can be done either sitting or standing for common conditions that can make recovery accessible to all. Delegates who have seen Suzette present in this area in the past can look forward to learning more as Suzette explores new exercises and strategies that can be added to your existing box of tools!

Anita Parker - Cardio Elevated and Athletic

Lace up for this super-charged cardio workout! We’ll use the step bench for sport-inspired moves and drills, playing with intervals and sequences that are interesting, inspiring, yet uncomplicated. You’ll leave this session sweaty and eager to bring new ideas to your classes. We’ll exercise, and then deconstruct the workout into its components and rationale. The

workout will be moderately choreographed, moving with the beat of the music most of the time, but not too intricate for those who don’t like choreography.

Mike Bracko - Fitness Games for Youth Athletes

Kids love to play; trainers love to get kids active with high energy activities. This creates the perfect combination to explore how to use games to motivate and help youth achieve fitness results. Fitness games are well suited for youth clients who prefer short bursts of activity and then rest versus “long slow distance” exercise. If you are looking for fresh ideas to inspire and motivate your youth clients or you’re interested in learning new techniques for training youth, Mike will not disappoint! Relay races with an exercise half way, partner drills, exercise tag, and learning exercise technique — this session is packed with ideas, moves, and fun!

Krista Popowych - Music, Games, and Drills that Thrill

Putting together cycling classes that keep riders engaged and challenged can be difficult at times. But knowing a few tricks can help you organize and execute a memorable ride. Beginning with a playlist selection that connects music with energy-demands, followed by the correct balance of drills and games creates the perfect formula for cycling success. If you are ready to ride, we are ready to deliver in this idea-packed session.

Block 29:00 – 10:30 amKristina Isaac - Navigating Nutrition for Women in their 20s - 40s

How do women navigate their changing nutrition needs in the middle of life-altering events, such as planning or raising a family, with the many different views and opinions presented to them? Kristina Isaac, registered dietitian and mom, will cover the different

stages women experience as they go through their 20s to 40s with a focus on pregnancy, the postpartum period, and building lifestyle habits that will benefit you at any age! This session will increase your capacity to work with women and help them optimize their eating habits by providing you with practical knowledge and resources to take to your fitness classes.

Lana Asuchak - B.A.R.R.E. HIIT

It’s ballet inspired with a strong integration of athletic prowess to recharge your classes with rigour and energy! Join Lana for a fierce workout that scorches calories, melts body fat, improves posture, and builds confidence. Ballet + Callanetics + HIIT = 1 Amazing Workout; B.A.R.R.E. none!

Jessica Zapata - Pilates Strong: No Weights Required

It’s not your usual strength training class. Experience Fitlates, the union of conventional fitness exercises with some traditional Pilates matwork to give you an innovative and integrative approach to strength training. There are NO weights required, but small portable equipment such as bands and small balls are used to take your strength classes to the next level. Improve alignment, strength, coordination, and tone with Fitlates. Get ready to sweat it out and add new ideas to your toolbox; this session is sure to put the “STRONG” into your strength classes!

9:15 – 10:45 amTriple Delight Aquatic Team - Off the Wall

Let’s face it, some aquatic facilities don’t always have the equipment we would like to use, whether we’re instructors, participants or water warriors working out on our own.  This workshop assists with basic tools, using various types of movements “Off the Wall” in an aquatic environment!  Simply put, the wall is creatively being used as a piece of equipment!

(block 2 cont’d →)

Fit 2018 SessionsIra McNamara - TKO FitCamp Party

Knockout your class participants with a cardio-kickboxing fusion experience that feels like a party. Let the music drive you as you breakdown and introduce techniques safely while providing progressions to suit your participants’ level of fitness. In this session, we integrate authentic kickboxing techniques with athletic drills that are seamless, effective and fun. Time will be spent breaking down and learning/improving your kickboxing basics.

Suzette O’Byrne/Jessica Power Cyr - A Whole New Spin on Rowing

The number of rowing classes is growing rapidly in the fitness industry. In order to stay ahead of the game and stand out from the rest, you must offer a unique experience that delivers results, builds a sense of community, and keeps every participant engaged.  In this session, review the technique required for effective rowing, explore what makes up power in a rowing AND cycle class and then experience the synergistic drills born in the cycle AND rowing studio.  This workshop is ideal for rowing or cycling instructors, and also for instructors who that want to incorporate different modalities in one class.

Block 311:00 am – 12:30 pmMichol Dalcourt - Training and Injury Proofing the Foot and Ankle

The foot and ankle complex is, for the most part, misunderstood. If not working well, the whole body will feel its effects and will not function properly. The foot and ankle are often forgotten when considering movement. Low back pain and shoulder disfunction can, in many cases, have their roots in the poor function of this complex. This workshop will explore the nature and role of the foot and ankle complex to the function of the body. In this interactive workshop,

you will learn how to properly screen foot and ankle function and how to choose the right foot and ankle exercises for your client/athlete.

Krista Popowych - The Furnace

Are you ready to ignite your next workout? Let’s burn it up with a total cardio mix of calorie torching workout ideas. Learn how to apply the most current fat-burning research and science to truly help your participants reach their personal goals of feeling better and increasing their calorie burn. Put it to practice with various cardio combinations that include a mix of low, high, fast and slow.

Helen Vanderburg - Mobility Stability Paradigm

What holds us back and limits us in movement? As our knowledge of the human body in motion expands we realize more and more that no part of the body works in isolation, but rather the entire body works as an integrated whole. With this understanding defining actions as an isolated event such as a hamstring stretch is only telling a part of the story. In this workshop, you will learn about the mobility and stability continuum and how mobility and stability interplay with each other continually to allow effective and efficient movement to occur. Let’s explore alignment from the perspective of the whole body to understand how each body is unique in its expression of movement.

11:15 am – 12:45 pmTriple Delight Aquatic Team - Advanced Choreography

This practical shallow-water workout will teach participants the art of the “aqua jam.” This session will emphasize upper body posture and form, using core muscle strength to balance the lower body’s performance of challenging and graceful trunk moves. You’ll literally be dancing your way around the pool to cool rhythmic beats!

Lynne Skilton-Hayes - Combat Cardio Kickbox

Blend heart pounding, bootcamp-inspired power moves with traditional kickboxing drills and combinations. We’ll review critical technique on punches and kicks and learn how to progress drills and combinations with guidelines for safe and effective program design. This workshop is ideal for both a new instructor looking to teach kickboxing or the seasoned instructor looking for new ideas for current kickboxing or athletic classes. Come take a jab at this intense workout!

Jessica Zapata - Ride to Inspire

What makes a great cycling class? Great inspiration! Inspiration can be found in instructor cues, drill set up, music, and overall class delivery and execution. Find out how as Jessica takes you through the paces on a “Ride to Inspire!” Walk away from the weekend with a ready to go class plan designed to inspire and motivate your cycling classes starting Monday morning.

Block 41:30 – 3:00 pmMike Bracko - Regular to Ripped: HIIT New Fat Burning Zone

This innovative and practical workshop will take delegates through the most productive HIIT research and training protocols that maximize fat loss. Reduce skin folds? You got it with Tremblay’s medium intensity exercise. Reduce body fat for women? Go for it with Trapp’s 8-seconds of work followed by 12-seconds rest. Reduce total body fat? It’s on with Heydari’s 20-minute training. Working with overweight/obese clients? Time to use Gillen’s 6-minute work-out. Plus, six more incredible HIIT protocols for maximizing fat loss. Shown to provide maximum benefit in less time, see how HIIT protocols can be integrated into any training session with any client.

(block 4, cont’d →)

Fit 2018 SessionsLynne Skilton-Hayes - Power Step

Experience this step interval format and use the step to apply load in order to challenge your cardiovascular system along with the strength and endurance of the lower body. Experience the easy to follow athletic step combinations and intervals of lower body strength exercises, and walk away (not easily) loaded with ideas that can be applied to your current muscle conditioning or step classes. Take away a Monday morning ready class that will give your class plan an intensity boost while giving your participants the results they crave.

Jessica Power Cyr - PT Tool Box

As the popularity of personal fitness training and small group training sessions are growing, we can get overwhelmed with all the possibilities and perhaps get sloppy with our program delivery.  Keep your participants engaged and ensure they don’t get injured or overtrained along the way. Jessica will provide you with a systematic approach to program design and delivery while following a basic periodization model.  She will layer the introduction of tools such as tubing, Bender Balls and gliders, just to name a few, in an ever-evolving exercise program. Jessica’s goal is to fill your PT Tool Box so you always have the right tool for the job.

1:45 – 3:15 pmAshley Bishop - Aqua Adage

Adage means “drawn out or lengthened”. In this session we will focus on creative range of motion and flexibility techniques taken from ballet and adapted to the aquatic environment. Learn to lengthen and strengthen muscles that often are neglected, and achieve an overall “feel good healing” of the body.

Helen Vanderburg - Yoga to the Core

Bring focus to the inner core body through effective breathing techniques and strong core focused sequences of asana that build strength. Through attentive awareness, help your participants develop a functional core that is stable, mobile and powerful. Learn yoga sequences to bring mindfulness to the core while strengthening through integrated movement sequences, and release undue stress that limits the core from optimal function.

Ira McNamara - Create a Cycle Class that is a Difference Maker

In this workshop, we take time developing the skill that can be a difference maker in a cycle class — coaching. How do you coach your cycle class in a way that provides not just a class but an experience? Let’s take the time to develop a variety of creative

coaching techniques to draw more out of your riders. Coaching is a powerful way to draw your riders into the room or allow their minds to reach beyond the limits of the cycle room to breakthrough barriers in their lives. Coaching is a skill — let’s hop on our bikes and discover the new places it can take us.

Block 53:30 – 5:00 pmTriple Delight Aquatic Team - The Games We Play

Make a big splash in your next water aerobics class! Bring your toys to the pool and let the kid in you come out! Whether as individuals, partners or teams – everybody’s a WINNER with the fun and fitness inspired aqua GAMES WE PLAY!

Michol Dalcourt - Exercise Training Variability for Health

Often, fitness and health are seen as synonymous. There is, however, a great distinction. Fitness refers to the quality of being able to perform a physical task, whereas health refers to the physiological harmony of the biological system. Often, these are at conflict. In this session, Michol will look at variability in physical exercise to promote resiliency and versatility of the body from the perspective of health outcomes. In this

(block 5, cont’d →)

Fit 2018 Sessionsinteractive lecture, Michol will:

• identify the difference between fitness and health through the lens of physiology,

• outline the current constructs of training for fitness versus training for health and why this should matter to everyone,

• clarify a structure which allows the health professional to navigate both fitness and health outcomes, and

• provide a guided workout to reinforce these structural elements.

Amanda Layden - Animal Flow

In our day-to-day life, we often get stuck in the same movement ‘diet,” but our bodies have the capability to move in the most amazing ways. This session will explore different animal-based movement patterns and flows. Movements are dynamic bodyweight bipedal and quadrupedal based. The intention behind this practice is to increase joint mobility, flexibility, stability, neuromuscular development, and neural mobility. You might just find this a workout for your brain more than anything. Come find out what your spirit animal is.

Lana Asuchak - LA Bootcamp

This tri-planar cardiovascular and strengthening workout promises to ignite your metabolism. Experience a mix of rapid fire drills mixed with metabolic weight exercises for the ultimate fat burning workout emphasizing quality movements integrating all the planes of the body. Maximum results in the least amount of time! Keep moving every way in this functional, high energy workshop!

Robin O’Grady - Brilliant Full-Body Bender Ball

Beyond core training the Bender Ball has many uses in total body conditioning. In this creative yet intense session, you will learn how to take your clients to the next level of their training. With mindful exercises, we will not only increase their strength and agility, but also create a mind body connection that will serve to prevent injury and increase confidence. This session has the group fitness instructor and personal trainer in mind, with workout ideas for both to use.

Suzette O’Byrne - Kneezles and Hipitis

The Kneezles and Hipitis...technical terms for knee or hip issues.  By utilizing mobility, stability and coordination techniques to relaxation, breath and releasing methods, help your students with corrective exercise to help those joints crucial to movement and quality of life find some ease and stability.  Common issues covered include osteoarthritis, piriformis syndrome, ligament tears, and bursitis.

Jessica Power Cyr - Brain Fit - Putting the Focus on Thoughtful Training

Join Certified Exercise Physiologist and Best Friends Approach Associate Trainer for the Alzheimer’s Society, Jessica Power Cyr, in this intriguing lecture on how regular exercise impacts the health of your brain.  She will discuss the positive effects of exercise and how it delays and may protect against chronic brain conditions such as dementia and depression. She will also discuss research on how exercise positively impacts those who already have a chronic brain condition diagnosis. The goal of this session is to give you the tools to educate on how exercise is medicine.

Michol Dalcourt - Functional Circuit Training for the Older Adult

Goals and physiological readiness tend to change as we get older. There are unique demands and considerations for this special population. In this session, learn how to consider, prepare and execute a circuit for functional training specific for the older adult. Balance, spacial awareness, metabolic flexibility, resiliency and functional strength will be incorporated into the circuit. Regression and progression based upon clear parameters will be established to allow the

coach to deliver a well-considered and thought out program.

Helen Vanderburg - Turbulent

Learn a new form of high intensity interval training with Turbulent. This workout protocol involves a wide range of interval training styles from low to moderate and high to extreme, performed in cycles with high intensity cardio bursts. Come away with practical interval training exercises that can boost your training in group fitness, small group and personal training. Get results in a short period of time. Cause some turbulence and turn up the intensity!

Ira McNamara - POUND® Rockout Workout

Sweat, sculpt, and ROCK in this cardio jam session inspired by the infectious, energizing and sweat-dripping fun of playing the drums. Instead of listening to music, you become the music in this exhilarating full-body workout that combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and pilates-inspired movements. Designed for all fitness levels, POUND® provides the perfect atmosphere for letting loose, getting energized, toning up, and rockin’ out!

Krista Popowych - From Bike to Barre

In today’s indoor cycling world where more is presumed better, learn how to create fusion classes that tie in the key components of a solid ride with authentic fitness components. From revolutions to reps, take away effective ideas that will give your riders the know-how and the tools to add fusion-style rides into their training repertoire and programming.

Block 79:45 – 11:15 amMike Bracko - The Exercise Gene: Does Your Client Have It?

The best exercise is the one our clients like, right? Maybe not. It might be the one where they get the best response. The HERITAGE Family Study

(Bouchard et al., 1995) found that people who had identical exercise programs and compliance improved their fitness (V02max) dramatically differently. We, as trainers, can’t determine if clients have the exercise gene, but we can re-think training programs if clients are not getting the results they want. It could be choice of exercise or other variables of training that can help clients meet their goals. Every client has a different “fitness personality” (Brue, 2008), which makes for much variability in exercise response from individual to individual. In this session, we will investigate the physiological and psychological responses to different forms of exercise (i.e., strength, endurance, cardiovascular, HIIT, etc.) and compare and contrast them in an effort to understand how to elicit a better response for our clients. We will identify how to customize each client’s training according to their personality and exercise response. Join Mike as he helps us make sense of the ‘Exercise Gene.”

Lynn Skilton-Hayes - Make the Most of Your Muscles

A lunge is a lunge and a bicep curl is a bicep curl right? Why then are these exercises more impactful in some classes over others? It all comes down to thoughtfully structuring your class and your ability to teach and cue technique effectively. Learn concepts around set performance and how best to sequence exercises most effectively along with how to fine tune your cueing. Take your muscle conditioning classes to the next level and walk away with a toolbox of tricks trainers use to get the most out of their clients.

Krista Popowych - Triple - Training: FXNal Circuits

You’ve heard it’s important to double the fun, but what about tripling the results? Progressive resistance training can improve the functional movement patterning for many clients, regardless of ability or starting fitness level. Discover a 3-step approach that is sure to generate improved strength, power and speed for all your clients. Life doesn’t work in 2-count reps, and for that reason it is important to train in a manner that generates speed and strength for critical power and powerful results.

(block 7, cont’d →)

Fit 2018 Sessions10:00 – 11:30 amTriple Delight Aquatic Team - Olympic Challenge

This practical water workout teaches participants the art of emphasizing correct upper body posture and form while using core muscle strength to balance the body vertically on the noodles. Total body strength is used while kickboxing with spa bells to add challenging trunk moves. Participants will “stick it” in deep water during water polo drills followed by a complete water polo class. You’ll literally be exercising your way around the pool (with or without resistance equipment) to cool rhythmic beats!

Michol Dalcourt - Restorative Poses - The Value of Physical Posture in Recovery/Performance/Wellness Schemes

“Night is to day as movement is to rest” - Philip Beach. This statement is not only extremely important for health and performance outcomes, but speaks directly to what is understood in the research for tissue behaviour. Namely, that HOW we rest can and ultimately will impact how we move. In many instances, the advice for “rest/recovery” is simply to avoid structured exercise. We now know that this could not be further from the truth. HOW we rest can be programmed in and optimized through a programming strategy. One of these strategies is to use restorative poses. Restorative poses are positions/postures that help regulate the ANS, foster shape change in the body’s structure, and create mindfulness. They are prescribed as very specific health and performance interventions which will accelerate recovery, normalize system function, and balance allostatic load. Anyone who is interested or serious about ‘structured regeneration’ needs to know suitable intervention strategies and why they may be critical to health and performance outcomes.

Suzette O’Byrne /Jessica Power Cyr - Yin/Yang Spin

What could be better than a session with SUZESSICA!

Yes, you read right.  Join Suzette O’Byrne and Jessica Power Cyr (Suzessica) in this Yin and Yang Spin session.  We will visit the two sides of a spin class. YIN the technical side and YANG the fun and energetic side of spin.  In this session Suzessica will take you through a lesson plan that integrates a balance of technique, drills, and power while weaving in fantastic music, energy, and entertainment for the perfect blend of YIN and YANG.  Come find your spin balance with Suzessica!

Block 812:15 – 1:45 pmLynne Skilton-Hayes - Step Metamorphosis

Why do so many instructors teach step but never venture into the world of teaching multiple step formats? The conversion is easier to make than you think. This workshop will show you how to easily morph your single step choreography into double step choreography for a completely different look and feel. Use the same base of choreography and the same teaching strategies but see how the class morphs into something completely different simply by adding another bench into the mix. It’s a simple conversion for an amazing end result with little to no extra work for the instructor.

Jessica Power Cyr - Integrated Strength

Join AFLCA Trainer and Certified Exercise Physiologist Jessica Power Cyr in this innovative and dynamic session based on current research on resistance training. Jessica will provide you with the tools to design and deliver creative resistance training combinations to keep your participants moving while allowing their body to engage in active recovery. This means your participants can do more in a shorter period of time and see the results they want to achieve. This session will integrate multi-joint and multi-planar exercises within multi-set combos

to challenge the body as a whole.  Get ready to be “Powered Up” with Jess!

Michelle Cederberg - Cue the Music — Super Charge Your Indoor Ride

Great music is the driving force behind fun and motivating cycle classes, but it’s not just about playing the song and riding along. It’s about choosing and using great music to create an energizing cycle experience. If it’s a great song for cycle, the drills and transitions will reveal themselves in the music. And, not every great song is great for cycle. In this interactive session, we’ll examine different pieces of music and play with mapping the drills. The key is not to pick songs for each drill but to pick the drill based on the song. Speed drills, seated and standing climbs, transitions into and out of the saddle; it’s all in the music. Find mastery with music mapping, and what you get is a super-charged cycle experience!

12:30 – 2:00 pmAshley Bishop - Aqua - Cardio Combos 2.0

Take the mystery out of aquatic choreography and gain a better understanding of Add-On, Pyramid, and Pure Repetition choreography styles. These cardio combos are an effective way to add diversity, intensity and FUN to your aqua classes. We will focus on shallow water formats (with a hint of deep) providing a total body workout without the use of equipment.

Michol Dalcourt - Program Design for the Desk Jockeys

The chronic seated position can be extremely disruptive to biology. It has damaging neural, mechanical, metabolic and cellular effects, which lead to poor health and performance outcomes. In this workshop, learn how chronic desk life can:

• affect neural input and sensitivity,

• alter mechanical structural changes (through (block 8, cont’d →)

Fit 2018 Sessionsposture and through other means),

• increase the risk of metabolic disease, and

• change cell signalling actions.

This science will inform programming of training and coaching solutions which will be presented in a very structured and practical way. For anyone who trains a desk jockey, this workshop is not to be missed.

Helen Vanderburg - Fire and Ice

Heat it up and cool it down. The perfect balance of high intensity and restoration. Fuel your internal fire and feel the burn of high intensity training with a short intense interval training workout followed by the cooling and calming of yoga inspired stretches. This all-in-one workout is the perfect balance of yin and yang, the internal fire and ice.

Block 92:30 – 4:00 pmAshley Bishop - Dynamically Rhythmic

Let the music motivate the movement as you rhythmically cool down your Aquatic exercise classes. Using choreography patterns, dynamic combinations, and feel-good song choices, you will create the optimum environment for effective cool downs that will leave your participants feeling energized.

Michelle Cederberg - The Success - Energy Equation: What it Really Takes to Win at Work, and Still Have a Life

When it comes to success, why is it that some people are able to push forward and achieve at high levels while others seem to flounder? Research suggests that it has less to do with skill or education, and more to do with how we set goals and whether we possess the key characteristics that drive achievement.

In this thought-provoking session, health and productivity expert, Michelle Cederberg gets honest about what it really takes to find success at the level you desire, and the energy to make it happen.
