In a major disaster, high winds and rising oodwaters canprevent emergency services from reaching you. Wind debris andood damage can cut road access. Your community and yourfamily could become isolated for up to three days or more.

Even if you live just around the corner from a shopping centre, you may not be able to get there. And even if you could, theshops may be closed due to ooding.

After a disaster has passed, roads can be closed and essentialservices disrupted, such as power, gas and water supply, andphone communications. Emergency Services will be focused onassisting the most vulnerable in the community during an eventwhere a large number of people are affected.

Depending on your circumstances, you may not have immediateaccess to the support provided and will need to rely on thesupplies and equipment you have on hand at home.

If you were isolated by a disaster right now, are you prepared?Do you have enough food, water and equipment to sustain yourfamily for three days or more?

Tak th tim now to prpar an emrgncy Plan.It is an important stp to prpar for what can happnand to stay saf.

Develop youremrgncy Plan with the entire householdand talk about:

Whether you live in a ood prone area or, your home is at riskfrom storm tide - what would you do?

If youre separated when a disaster happens (at work orschool etc), how will you stay in touch and where will youmeet up.

Where would you go if you need to evacuate your household.

Compiling a list of emergency contact phone numbers.

If anyone in your family, household or neighbourhood hasspecic medical conditions or special needs and will needassistance:

include specic items in youremrgncy Kit to assistpeople with communication or mobility difculty

arrange to notify anyone with a hearing impairment ofemergency warnings and other key information

arrange to assist anyone with a sight impairment ormobility difculty if evacuation is required.

Whether you need to make plans for your pets?

Record all your details in the copy of youremrgncy Planat the end of this brochure or download a copy fromwww.disastr.qld.gov.au

step 4 - tune into warnings

TsunamIA tsunami is a series of powerful, fast moving waves producedduring a large scale ocean disturbance. Tsunami can occur withvery little warning and are caused by a variety of events such asearthquake, volcanic eruptions, explosions or landslides.

Tsunami can cause rapid and unpredictable changes in waterlevel, resulting in dangerous rips and currents in harbours, coastal inland waterways and along beaches. Less frequently, tsunami can also result in more serious inundation of coastalland, serious threat to lives and damage to property in low lying

    coastal areas.

The effects of a tsunami on currents may last for several hoursor even days. Because of the limited warning time for a tsunami,it is very important for you to plan and prepare in advance.

Ti re differet fro wid well wve i everl wy:

The volume of water moved by a tsunami is signicantly morethan that moved by regular ocean waves.

There may be a relatively long time between each wavearriving at the coastline and the rst wave is not necessarilythe largest.

As a tsunami approaches the shore, it may appear as a rapidlyrising or falling tide.

Even a relatively small tsunami can be very dangerous toswimmers and mariners.

yo be dvied to do or ll of the followig whe ti wrig h bee ied:

Get out of the water and move away from the immediatewaters edge of harbours, coastal estuaries, rock platformsand beaches.

If on a boat or ship in a harbour, estuary or shallow waterclose to shore, and there is enough time, return to land, secure your vessel and move to higher ground.

If on a ship or boat at sea, move to deep water (open ocean)well off-shore and remain there until further advised.

If you are advised to evacuate, lock your home and followrecommended evacuation routes for your area.

It will be in your own interests to walk to safety if possible toavoid trafc jams.

If you are unable to leave the area, take shelter in the upperlevel of a sturdy brick or concrete multi-storey building andstay there until advised it is safe to leave.

Wait for the all-clear before returning to your home or to port.

Think about the consequences of your actions and dont riskyour life or the lives of others.

    dont drive through flood water.

warnings of minor, moderate or major ooding in areaswhere specialised warning systems have been installed. In these areas the warning message will identify the rivervalley, the locations expected to be ooded, the likelyseverity of the ooding and when it is likely to occur.

When you hear warnings for the potential of ood or severestorm:

    activate youremrgncy Plan

stay tuned into warnings and updates move vehicles, outdoor equipment, garbage, chemicals and

    poisons to higher locations

sandbag indoor drains to prevent sewage backow

plan which indoor items you will raise or empty if waterthreatens your home

check youremrgncy Kit is fully stocked.

    If you nd to vacuat

If you need to evacuate due to the expected arrival ofoodwater, follow the evacuation tips included in youremrgncy Plan at the back of this guide and travel to yourpredetermined safer location.

    safety tips - seVere storm

Severe storms can also produce ash ooding, so pleaserefer to further information in the ood safety tips in thisguide.

    FlooD

There are three different types of oodthat can ccur in Queensand.

Flash oodingis the most dangerous in terms of potentialthreat to loss of life and can result from relatively short,

intense bursts of rainfall that can occur almost anywhere inQueensland. People are often swept away after they enter theseoodwaters on foot, or in vehicles, due to the speed and powerof the swift moving water.

There may be little or no advance warning for ash oodso it is important to:

pay attention to weather patterns and weather forecasts

stay away from rivers, creeks and drains

    get to higher ground

    act quickly

never try to drive, ride or walk through a ash ood.

Mountain or coastal rivers quick onset oodingoccurs in themountain headwater areas of large rivers, as well as in rivers

that drain to the coast. In these areas, the rivers are steeperand ow more quickly, with ooding lasting for one or two days. These oods can pose a risk to loss of life and property as thereis much less time to prepare and the ow of water is faster andmore dangerous.

Inland rivers slow onset oodingis the ooding of rivers in thevast at areas of central and western Queensland that may lastfor one or more weeks and can lead to:

major loss of livestock and crop damage

extensive damage to rural towns and road and rail links

isolation of whole communities for weeks and sometimesmonths.

    warnings

The Bureau of Meteorology provides: generalised ood warnings where ooding is occurring,

or is expected to occur, in a particular region where nospecialised warning systems have been installed

warnings for severe storms that may cause ash ooding

    safety tips - flooD

severe sTormSevere Thunderstorms can produce large hail, damagingwind, lightning and heavy rainfall, which can cause death, injury and damage to property. The Bureau of Meteorologyissues Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for these phenomena.Damaging winds and heavy rainfall can also be produced inother weather systems, such as in a monsoon or an East Coast

Low, which can cause extensive damage to property and turndebris into dangerous missiles as well as producing dangeroussurf conditions. For these systems, the Bureau of Meteorologyissues Severe Weather Warnings.

Pay close attention to weather forecasts and warnings atany time of year but particularly during storm season - thisinformation will assist you in daily preparations around thehome. Radio news weather bulletins will usually provide themost information on current conditions and the latest warningsthat have been issued.

    CYCLONE STORM SURGE

cycloneTropical cyclones are intenselow-pressure systems that formover warm tropical waters.Winds in a cyclone travel in aclockwise direction around thecentre and can reach speedsover 200 km/h. The severewinds can extend for hundredsof kilometers from the calmeye or centre of the cyclone.

Cyclones are dangerousbecause they producedestructive winds, heavyrainfall, and damaging stormsurges. The destructive windscan cause extensive damageto property and vegetation andcan turn debris into dangerousmissiles. The heavy rainfall

associated with cyclones canproduce extensive ooding andlandslides which can causeproperty damage, increase therisk of drowning and cut roadaccess.

Extreme waves generated bycyclones can cause severecoastal erosion and aredangerous to vessels out at seaand those moored in harbours.

The most destructive anddangerous hazard associatedwith tropical cyclones is thelocal rise in sea-level known asstorm surge which can causeinundation and ooding of low-lying coastal areas.

    strm urg ad trm tid

Storm surge is generated bythe low atmospheric pressure

and gale force onshorewinds experienced during atropical cyclone. As a cycloneapproaches the coast, thismound of seawater is pushedonto shore and can appear asa rapid rise in sea level, up toseveral metres high, at least50 km wide and can last up toseveral hours.

The combination of stormsurge and normal ocean tide

is known as a storm tide. Theworst impacts can occur when astorm surge arrives on top of ahigh tide. When this happens, the storm tide can reach areasthat might otherwise have beensafe. If you live in a low-lyingtropical or sub-tropical coastalarea, you could be at risk fromstorm tide inundation.

will you nd to plan for vauation?

Find out from your council if your home is in a storm tideevacuation area. If it is, arrange a safer place for your evacuation aspart of your preparations. Ask friends or family that live in secureaccommodation, in an area further inland and on higher ground ifyou can seek shelter in case of storm tide.

If you dont live in a storm tide evacuation area, sheltering inplace by staying in your home is often the best option. However,if you live in an old home, built before 1982, or if you havespecial needs, it may be safer to stay with family or friends in anewer home.

    warning

a cylon wath is issued by the Bureau of Meteorology whengales or stronger winds associated with a cyclone are expectedto hit within 24 to 48 hour. A cylon warningis issued by theBureau when gales or stronger winds are expected to hit within24 hour.

whn you har a ylon arning and it i af to hltrin pla:

activate youremrgny Plan and locate youremrgny Kit

unplug all appliances and turn off mains supply (followmanufacturers shutdown procedures for solar power systems)

bring your family into the strongest part of the house andshelter well clear of windows, doors and skylights

stay tuned into warnings via battery radio for updates

if the building begins to break up, immediately seek shelterunder a strong table or bench or under a heavy mattress.

Bar th alm y of th ylon

Some people venture outdoors during the eye of a cyclone, mistakenly believing that the cyclone has passed. Stay inside untilyou have received ofcial advice that it is safe to go outside.

storm tid can damage and destroy buildings, cut off evacuationroutes and cause injuries and fatalities. You put yourself and yourfamily at great risk if you do not evacuate when requested.
