Supplies For How Long?
US Government advises a minimum of 3 days worth of supplies.
Recent events have shown this estimate is too low.
Experience from recent natural emergencies have shown 14 days is BARE minimum.
30 day goal is better target number
Supplies For How Long? (cont.)
Should I store more than 30 days? You can but then you move into long term storage plans and survival storage which are beyond the scope of this presentation
Won’t my stuff go bad?Yes and NoRotation is key for these type of storage solutions
Emergency Items – Priority List
1) Water is the HIGHEST priority item2) Protection3) Food4) Shelter5) Tools6) Medical7) Specialty Items
Emergency Items - Water
Water is the HIGHEST priority itemAt 120° F a human can survive 2 days without water; most humans will die after 3 to 4 days without water! How much do you need per day?• 1 gallon of “drinking” water per person• 2 gallons of water per person for other
activities– Washing/Cooking/Cleaning
Emergency Items – Water (cont.)
Water can be stored in water bottles to water barrels to anything that will hold it.
Emergency Items – Water (cont.)
Water has NO EXPIRATION date so it will never spoil.
Water can become contaminated making it undrinkable
Keeping water out of the light (sunlight or artificial) is the best way to ensure nothing grows in it.Adding chlorine or other water treatment chemicals can keep water safe for storage.
Emergency Items – Water (cont.)
Water bottles are great way to store drinkable water for short periods of time.
Plastic bottles leach chemicals into the water in long term storagePlastic bottles can easily allow bacteria to grow when in light for long periods of time
Emergency Items – Water (cont.)
Water barrels are the prefer method to store water
Food grade plastic designs for long term water storageBarrels can hold more water in less space than the water bottles• Remember you are storing water to
DRINK and USE.• Barrels come in 5, 6, 15, 30 and 55 gal
sizes
