Welcome to College Theater at the MACFrom the inception of planning College Theater productions, each season is built with the idea that both escapism and engagement theater are important for students to experience and our audiences to enjoy. Escapism theater allows us to escape from our daily turmoil and daily life, offering pure entertainment. Engagement theater focuses on the human condition and the burning quest for a solution—it is theater we do not easily forget and that changes us in some way, forever.

The mission of both escapism and engagement theater is to expose everyone to the great theater of the past as well as important theater of today. We’ve chosen an eclectic season including both escapism and engagement theater, culled after considering countless titles and varied genres. Above all, we’re most interested in training our students as artists, both on the stage and behind the curtain, engaging with students and community in our audience, as well. That is the power of live theater, which does not exist except in this live, ephemeral moment—it is an art that celebrates interaction—on stage, but also between stage and audience.

The 2019–2020 College Theater season is a perfect example of this exciting mix: The Wolves, Macbeth, Scenes from an Execution and Clue: On Stage.

“I regard the theater as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”

—Thornton Wilder, Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright and novelist

Thank you so much for supporting the voices of our talented students and power of live theater. We hope you join us again and again.

“But God above deal between thee and me,for even now I put myself to thy direction.”

Malcolm, Macbeth, IV, 3 First produced in 1606, Macbeth remains one of Shakespeare’s most revered works, and also uncannily timely. It is, ultimately, the story of a noble, honorable person tempted by power who o’ersteps himself, and of the dark place violence can take us. Though the otherworldly certainly tempts, it is the human who finally and decisively makes his own choice. And the consequence of that choice is far, broad and devastating. But as much as the script is a warning against irrationality and violence, it’s also a tribute to the courage of doing what is right, even when the cost can be nearly unbearable. The Great Chain of Being was essentially a belief in the delicate balance of the world in all elements, including good and evil, and had a great following in the Renaissance. Once the Chain is knocked out of kilter, usually by a human act, the result is crescendoing chaos, until the Chain is righted, often with the original action being avenged. Nearly all of the characters in Macbeth attempt to save their country and those they love, until they finally prevail. As much as this script serves as a warning to all of us to stay calm, think through our actions and remain noble, it also urges us to speak out and take action against injustice. Even when it is hard to tell whom to trust, we must follow our hearts, as Malcolm proclaims above. ~CCH

William Shakespeare (playwright) is regarded by many as the greatest dramatist of all time. An Englishman, Shakespeare was also a poet and an actor. His works such as Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet hold a significant place in world literature and occupy a major part of literary academics. Often referred to as England’s national poet, Shakespeare is one author whose works have been translated into every major language of the world, and his plays are performed more than that of any other playwright living or dead.

Although there is much speculation about the information on Shakespeare’s personal life, the best available sources state that he was the eldest son of John Shakespeare, a local businessman and Mary, the daughter of a landowner. Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 23, 1564. It is believed that Shakespeare obtained his primary education from Stratford Grammar School where he might have studied history, Latin literature, acting and theater. Although there is mention of him working as a schoolteacher, some historians state, Shakespeare apprenticed with his father after finishing school. It is not known for sure whether he received any higher education or not. At the age of 18, Shakespeare married Ann Hathaway, who was eight years his senior. Their first child, Susannah, was born within six month of the marriage followed by twins, Judith and Hamnet. In 1596, Hamnet died at the age of 11. It is supposed that the lines, “Grief fills the room of my absent child,” from King John are a reflection of Shakespeare’s own feelings towards the death of his only son.

The year 1585 marked the beginning of flourishing endeavors for Shakespeare. He moved to London where he established a successful career as an actor and writer in addition to partly owning a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, later known as the King’s Men. Most of Shakespeare’s recognized work was produced between 1589 and 1613. During

Yee is excited to be a recipient of the 2019 Buffalo Theatre Ensemble Student Assistant Stage Management Scholarship and a participant in Buffalo Theatre Ensemble’s Shadow Program for Miracle on South Division Street.

Connie Canaday Howard (Director and Theater Department Chair) has enjoyed directing such shows as Pride and Prejudice, The Dreams of Antigone and Twelfth Night. The Heidi Chronicles, directed by Canaday Howard, received the award for best non-professional production in Chicagoland as a student production. She has been cited in Who’s Who Among America’s Colleges and Universities 11 times. She is artistic director for Buffalo Theatre Ensemble, a professional company in residence at the MAC, where she also directs and is a member of its acting ensemble. She is a member of Actors’ Equity Association. Canaday Howard was COD’s Outstanding Faculty for 2003–2004 and is a member of the Joseph Jefferson Committee’s Artistic Team, which is Chicago’s version of the Tony.

Jon Gantt (Lighting Design) is the technical coordinator for the McAninch Arts Center and has been a lighting and scenic designer for College of DuPage and the resident professional companies since the opening of the Arts Center in 1986. For more than 35 years, he has designed scenery and lighting for many professional and university theaters in and around Chicago. Recently, he designed the lighting for Buffalo Theatre Ensemble’s Don’t Dress for Dinner, Improbable Fiction and The 39 Steps, and for New Philharmonic’s Die

Fledermaus, and he did the scenic design for New Philharmonic’s The Mikado and La Traviata. For the College Theater program, he designed the set for Much Ado About Nothing, set and video for 1984, and lighting for These Shining Lives, Captain Blood, The Addams Family, Curse of the Starving Class, A Christmas Carol, The Foreigner, Godspell and The Wolves. Other notable past production designs include The Ruling Class, The Man of La Mancha, The Praying Mantis, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Evita, Sweeney Todd and his Jeff-nominated scenic design for the world premiere of The Grab at Theatre Building Chicago.

Michael W. Moon (Scenic and Sound Design) is the technical director and resident scenic designer for the MAC. His many scenic design credits for COD include The Skriker, The Dreams of Antigone and A Christmas Carol. Other favorite past projects include Carmilla and Grease at COD; puppet design for Lifeline Theatre’s Neverwhere, and costumes/masks for their Island of Dr. Moreau; costume and puppet design for Akvavit Theatre’s production of Blue Planet; and properties design for Chicago Children’s Theatre productions of A Year with Frog and Toad and 100 Dresses. his early writing career, Shakespeare mostly wrote comic plays. However, as his career progressed, his plays inclined towards tragedy, giving his work a whole new level of sophistication. Up till 1608, Shakespeare concentrated on tragedies, producing his most famous and finest works such as Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and Macbeth. The later stages of his career gave English literature Shakespearian tragicomedies and romances. In 1613, Shakespeare returned to Stratford where he died three years later on April 23, 1616, at the age of 52.

Although Shakespeare was appreciated as a distinguished playwright and poet during his lifetime, it was not until the 19th century

that the name of William Shakespeare received the status he holds now. While the Romantics considered Shakespeare to be a genius, the Victorians on the other hand, admired him to the extent of worship. The commencement of the 20th century marked an era of Shakespeare’s plays being excessively adapted to different mediums of performing arts, studied, rediscovered and translated into many languages all over the world. Shakespeare remains the only writer whose every line has been profoundly studied and interpreted by historians, scholars and students. The evergreen works of William Shakespeare have truly left a deep and lasting effect on world literature, theater and cinema.
