A NEWSLETTER FOR PEC’S ELECTRIC CONSUMERS

Before the Next Surge

High-tech gadgets, appliances, and computers all have one

weakness in common: deadly power surges. Too much electricity coursing through connecting wires can fry circuitry inside sensitive electronics, reducing them to expensive trash.

Unfortunately, electric current coming from your wall outlet doesn’t always remain at a steady, optimal 120 volts. Electricity can spike for a number of uncontrollable circumstances, such as weather events, animals interfering with electrical equipment and vehicle accidents with utility poles which can send thousands of volts searing through your wiring.

Many homeowners believe that adequate surge protection begins and ends with plugging their computer into a power strip. Unfortunately, that’s seldom the case.

First of all, not all surge protectors live up to their name; some are little more than glorifi ed extension cords. Second, a surge

will follow any wire into a house — phone and cable lines included — and threaten fax and answering machines, televisions, satellite systems, computers, and modems. And third, delicate electronic circuitry proliferates today’s modern home, leaving common appliances as vulnerable as computers to the eff ects of surges.

meter base and 2) within the home in order to provide the ultimate in protection.

The fi rst line of defense against surges is a socket device installed at your meter base. This device is designed to reduce any potentially damaging external, high-voltage spikes and surges to a “safe” level before they enter your home via the power line.

Extra protection is provided by surge suppression devices installed at outlets within your home for sensitive electronic equipment. When installed properly, these devices will protect your equipment from surges through the electrical wiring, telephone lines and coaxial cable. Device warranties range from $250 to $50,000.

Equipment and warranty are provided by TESCO, a name trusted by cooperative customers throughout the United States.

Protect your home through this program for $4.95 per month and a one time installation fee of $50, with a 60 month lease agreement. *During October, the $50 installation fee is discounted to $25. No deposit is required for current PEC consumers who have received service during the most recent 24 months and have established good credit with the cooperative. (For those who do not meet this criteria, there is a $100 refundable security deposit required to join the program.) The outside equipment remains the property of PEC; however, the devices inside the home are yours to keep.

Call us today at (580) 332-3031 or toll-free 1-877-456-3031 within the local Ada calling area.

H alloween is the most festively frightening night

of the year. But don’t make yours fraught with danger. Here are some safety reminders:

• As you’re decorating, make sure you check for cracked sockets, frayed, loose or bare wires, and loose connections. 740100500

• Fasten all outdoor lights securely to trees and other fi rm supports. Do not use nails or tacks that could puncture insulating cords and damage wires.

• Make sure decorative lighting is well-ventilated, protected from weather, and remains a safe distance from anything fl ammable like dry leaves and shrubs. Do not coil extension cords while in use or tuck under rugs or drapes.

• Make sure all outdoor electrical lights and decorations are plugged into an outlet protected with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). If your outlets aren’t equipped with GFCIs, have an

electrician install them or buy a GFCI adapter plug. Don’t overload outlets with too many extension cords and strands of lights.

• Keep power cords off walkways and porches that trick-or-treaters may use. You don’t want them to trip.

• Leave the porch light on for trick-or-treaters, and be sure to turn out all spooky lights and decorations before leaving home or going to bed. This will also save energy.

Energy vampires can suck your wallet dryThis Halloween, be aware that the hungry little vampires who ring your doorbell aren’t the only ones you need to be afraid of.

Energy vampires inside your home are sucking electricity right out of the

wires—for no good reason.

Energy vampires are appliances and electronic devices that you leave plugged in when nobody is using them. Even though they’re turned off , they still use small amounts of energy. 631404600

When you consider how many unused devices are plugged in around your home, their energy use can add up. In fact, they can add 10 percent or more to your monthly electric bill.

So when you turn something off , unplug it, too—unless it has to be on all the time, like the refrigerator. Here are three examples of devices that waste energy when they’re plugged in but not in use:

Chargers. You’ve got one for your phone, your tablet, your portable speaker, your iPod—and what else? Once the device is

fully charged it continues to draw electricity as long as it’s plugged in. And if you unplug the device from the charger but leave the charger plugged in, the charger continues to use—to waste—electricity.

Cable box. If you leave yours plugged in all the time for convenience, you’re adding nearly $20 a year to your electric bill for energy you’re not using.

Computers. Your home offi ce equipment, like the computer, printer and scanner, don’t need to stay on all the time. Turn them off and unplug them when you’re fi nished using them for the day.

Can’t remember to unplug them? Plug several devices into a power strip instead of into a wall outlet. Power strips allow the user to cut power to multiple devices at once. And unplug anything you rarely use, like the TV in the basement or the old stereo you haven’t turned on since you started downloading music.

It’s easy to win. Just find your account number located somewhere in the newsletter, then call, write or come to PEC by the 12th of the month in which your number is published to claim your $5.
