“I’m very excited to get back tomy favorite Island in the world,St Barth! My week will startwith that special flight into StBarth, made even more specialoverlooking the spectacular andeclectic mix of participatingsailing super yachts – it’s mag-ic!

I'm fortunate to be helming Par-sifal III, one of the large Periniyachts. The pressure to exceedin all aspects will certainly befelt in our Grandes Damesclass. Beyond the racing, keep-ing up with the hospitality andparties on board is anothercompetition in itself.

I hope everyone participates in

the Saturday Night BucketBash. We’ll share some liba-tions, swap stories, and dancethe night away. In the spirit ofthe island’s maritime historyand our seafaring relationship,we’ve declared the theme of“Pirates and Wenches."

Most importantly, my overallgoal is to ensure that the StBarth Bucket continues formany more years into thefuture. As we like to say: SailSafe, Win the Party!”

A top nautical event, Les Voilesde Saint Barth takes place April8-13, 2013. Close to 60 boats areheading toward the starting line.Inaugurated in 2010, Les Voiles deSaint Barth has just three editionsunder its belt but has already madea name for itself in the nauticalworld, attracting owners andsailors from around the globe. Thechallenge of the fourth edition, which takes place April 8-13: “Todo at least as well as in past years,”notes Luc Poupon, race directorand co-organizer with FrançoisTolède and Annalisa Gee. “Oneway is to offer new things on thewater as well as on land,” Pouponadds. “This year there are manyboats returning. To keep theminterested we have to offer new

race courses.” With its interestingcutout perimeter, the configurationof Saint Barth is “a real asset for

us,” Poupon says. “The coastallandscapes are very different fromeach other, and the presence of 15small islands allows us to organizedifferent courses with lots ofchanges in direction, which call fornumerous maneuvers for thecrew,” explains the race director.About 28 courses, from 14 to 40miles, have already been created, with the same starting line in theharbor and a finish line near thePetits Saints, off the coast of thepoint of Gustavia. The final choiceof courses depends on weatherconditions the day before eachrace. And the courses vary accord-ing to the size of the boats. Atpress time, 58 boats were alreadypre-registered for the fourth editionof Les Voiles, and divided into six

Following PatrickDemarchelier, JimmyBuffett, and PeterHarrison, AmericanJim Swartz will serveas the “godfather” ofthe fourth edition ofVoiles de SaintBarth, April 8-13.Swartz will also beout on the waves, atthe helm of Vesper,an IRC 52 withwhich he won his class in the 2011Voiles. A sailor with an impressivelist of wins, this IRC champion is“the best advocate of this event forthe skippers and owners of thesesporty 52’ sailboats,” considers oneof the event organizers. A veteranof the first three editions of LesVoiles, Swartz is back this year

with an all-star crewof 16 sailors, includ-ing some America’sCup and match rac-ing names: GavinBrady, Jamie Gale,James Baxter, andBen Beer. And hehas only good thingsto say about the qual-ity of racing in SaintBarth. “The key tothe success of Les

Voiles is the good balance of thedifferent classes, and the strongcompetition within each class,”notes Swartz. “Add the courses, each different and well adapted toeach class, plus a very professionalrace committee, and you have asuccessful event,” he says.

classes: Maxi-Racing/Maxi-Racing Cruising, IRC 52, Spin-naker, Non Spinnaker, RacingMulti-hull and Classic. Registra-tion is still open, with a form tobe filled out on the website forLes Voiles de Saint Barth:http://www.lesvoilesdesaint-barth.com/site/pre-inscription/.“Right up to the last minute,”indicates Poupon. On the shore, event organizerswant to keep as many events aspossible open to the public. Thisincludes concerts every eveningduring the week, and closing-night fireworks. They also wantto offer activities for kids, “toattract them to sailing,” explainsPoupon. And to host all of theparticipants, between four andthirty people per boat, in the bestpossible conditions. And theyhave less than a month to finalizeall the last-minute details.

His pastels capture thespirit of Saint Barth. Infact many aspects of theisland are evoked inpaintings by GéryLanglais, who is back forhis annual exhibit at LesArtisans in Gustavia. Healso shows his work inBrittany and Paris eachyear, but his show inSaint Barth reflects hislove for the island.

“The light and colors ofthe sea are similar inBrittany and Saint Barth, but of the water is colderthere,” he says with a bigsmile. “The light in Baliis so sharp, almost whiteat noon, yet very soft in

the morning and atnight.” His new paintingsof Saint Barth includenighttime and twilightscenes; times of day thatLanglais finds magical.“There is a special feel-ing at that time of day,”he avers. He also paintsthe island’s traditionalarchitecture and suchicons as Le Select.

“When I see something,I paint what I see, and tryto do it right away, tocapture the feeling, espe-cially at night when it’sharder to take photos,”the artist adds. “I wouldlike to do some largerpaintings in acrylic or even oils. Pastels are

smaller due to the size ofpaper available.”Acrylics would add abrighter color palette thanseen in Langlais’ softeryet inviting pastels, andallow the kind of minutiapossible with a smallbrush.

Inspired by Brittanypainters Emile Bernardand Henri Rivière, orFrench post-impression-

ist fauves such as PierreBonnard, Langlais hasdeveloped a style thatsuits Saint Barth well. And his paintings showthat he has really takenthe island to heart, as ifdoing his personal best topreserve its charms.

TWENTY-EIGHTTRASH CANSINSTALLED AROUNDTHE PORTTwenty-eight new wooden trashcanshave been installed by the Collectivi-ty around the Port of Gustavia, inlocations stretching from the terrainde boules as far as town hall, all theway around the harbor. This initia-tive was launched by the environ-mental commission of the territorialcouncil in response to a demandfrom various merchants and patronsof the port, who wondered how itcould be possible to keep Gustaviaclean without the proper place tothrow away trash. Two trashcanswere also placed in Corossol. Gus-tavia’s recently renovated Rue duGénéral de Gaulle, was until now theonly one to have such trashcans.

It’s that time of the year whenhumpback whales can beobserved in the waters aroundSaint Barth, with several sight-ings per day this month, primarilynear Toiny, Grand Fond, and Culde Sac. Often accompanied bytheir young, the whales comenear the shore to find food andrest, before they head backtoward northern waters. Thesemarine mammals are very sensi-tive, especially when with theirbabies, and should not be both-ered should you have the chanceto get close to them. Be sure torespect a distance of 150 meters, slow down considerably, and donot block their path. And limityour observation to 15 minutes,as they often consider such obser-vation as harassment or even dan-ger, as it can interfere with the

nursing of calves. Saint Barthbelongs to AGOA, a sanctuaryfor the protection of marine mam-mals, and an important interna-tional effort you can be part of. Ifyou spot whales, please call 06 90

31 70 73 and report how manyyou see and where they are. Thedata collected on various islandshelps estimate the global whalepopulation and determine theirmigratory routes.
