    EPAINTERNSHIPSIN EUROPE

    The EPA program in Germany offers theunusual and exciting opportunity to put yourlanguage skills into practice not only in theclassroom, but in a professional setting. Its aterrific way to explore your career interests whileliving and studying in an overseas setting. Bonn isthe main administrative center of the program andthe base, along with nearby Cologne, for all non-politics placements. Berlin is the base of a satelliteprogram for politics students. For all students theprogram begins with orientation in Bonn and thenstudents either remain in Bonn/Cologne or move toBerlin, depending on the internship selection.

    Politics students intern in the offices ofMembers of the Bundestag, the federal parliament

    of Germany, or in parliamentary groups, locatedclose to the renovated Reichstag building in Berlin'snew government quarter. EPA is one of the veryfew programs allowed to place students in theBundestag. All other internships are offered inBonn, the former capital of West Germany wheremany government jobs have remained, or inCologne. Bonn is also home to 16 United Nationsorganizations and a prestigious university, providinga rich cultural and social life. Cologne is one of theoldest cities in Germany and currently the fourthlargest, with a population of over one millionpeople. Cologne is located 20 minutes by trainfrom Bonn.

    Internship fields: Politics, Business, Museum,Theatre, Banking, Health, Journalism, Media,Music, Law, Advertising, and other internshipsby request. All internships are unpaid, andstudents work three to four days a week whiletaking two classes.

    Academic courses: Courses are taught inGerman by local faculty. The German Politics

    course is taught during the orientation sessionand then concluded during the nine day visitto Berlin, in which all Bonn/Cologne studentstake part. The Arts and Culture class includesa number of field trips. Students have accessto several academic, governmental and citylibraries in Bonn, Cologne and Berlin.Courses are not offered during the shortersummer session of 8 weeks, and studentsintern five days a week in the summer.

    Housing: Bonn/Cologne students can live withhost families. Short-term apartments and studentdormitories are also available. Berlin studentsare normally housed in furnished apartments.

    Whats included in EPA fees: Comprehensiveorientation, rent and utilities, 2 academiccourses (none during the summer), internshipplacement with ongoing local support, and 24/7local emergency contact.

    Credit: Upon successful completion, eight creditsare awarded for the internship, and four credits

    for each course. The summer program, wortheight credits, is internship only.

    Passport/Visa: A valid passport and GermanVisa are required to participate.

    Semesters offered: Fall, Spring, Summer (Bonn/Cologne only)

    Language requirement: Written and spokenGerman proficiency required. Students musthave completed at least four semesters ofcollege-level German.
