INTRODUCTION
1. The German Armed Forces use military symbols extensivelyon maps, in tables of organization (war establishments), and ondirection and location signposts in combat zones. Militarysymbols will also be seen on vehicles and equipment, with orwithout the divisional emblem.
2. The German system of military symbols consists of a numberof basic and supplementary symbols, which are combined toindicate various headquarters, units, and equipment.
3. At the beginning of the present war, the Germans used anelaborate system of military symbols for both the Army and theAir Force. Apparently this system was found to be too com-plicated for use in the field, and two lists of amendments (onedated November 1942 and the other January 1943) were issuedwith the object of simplifying the basic and supplementarysymbols for weapons and equipment of the Army. The methodof indicating the calibers, numbers, ranges, and countries oforigin of weapons was also altered.
4. Inasmuch as many German charts, maps, and other docu-ments may still employ the old basic symbols, or in some casesa mixture of the old and the new, both the new and the oldsymbols are shown side by side in columns headed, respectively,"Current" and "Old." Symbols that remain unchanged arenot shown in the "Old" column but appear in the "Current"column only. The "Current" column alone is carried in casesof large groups of symbols that were not affected by the revisions. If the new symbol for a unit is at present unknown or cannotreadily be derived from the new basic symbols, only the oldsymbol is given. In Part 1 (Army) a single column headed"New" is carried in a fewi isolated instances where space preventsthe insertion of both the new and old. In Sections I to IV of
-
Part 2 (Air Force) only the old system of symbols is presentedin a single column headed "Old"; in Section V, only the newsystem of symbols is presented in a single column headed "New."In subsequent sections of Part 2 both the new and the old symbolsare shown in columns headed, respectively, "Current" and "Old."Since the naval symbols, so far as is known, have not beenrevised, in Part 3 (Navy) only a single column headed "Current"is carried.
5. It will be noted that, in some cases, there are alternatemilitary symbols for the same subject. This is in no way adeviation from a consistent pattern, but rather testimony to thelogic and flexibility of the German system. A German soldierwho does not know the precise tactical symbol may construct onefrom well-known basic symbols. The resultant symbol may befully as comprehensible as the official one.
6. In the translation of German terms, an attempt has beenmade to approximate equivalent terms in the Armies of theUnited States and Great Britain, respectively. In most instances, however, where the apparent equivalents would be misleadingor where no equivalents exist, a literal translation is necessary. In a few other instances where equivalents are lacking or where aliteral translation would result in ambiguity or confusion, theoriginal German terminology is preserved. With the exceptionof the term Hq, abbreviations are not employed in the "U.S."column, whereas, according to preference, official British militaryabbreviations are employed consistently in the "British" column.
7. The symbols are arranged in groups according to logical andstructural principles. These groups usually, but not always, coincide with the German classification of units according to arm(Waffengattung); important departures from this system ofclassification are indicated in the text. Mention is also made ofvarious changes in nomenclature and organization, althoughapparently most of these have not affected the basic structureof the symbols.
8. For the convenience of the reader, blank pages headed"Memoranda" are inserted at the end of each part.

Section V. New System of Basic Symbols and Composition of Tactical Symbols
An order issued in February 1943 by the Commander in Chief of the German Air Force simplified the AirForce basic symbols. These basic symbols as well as the tactical symbols derived from them are analyzed below.

Under the new system the same basic symbol >1 is employed to represent both headquarters and unitsof Fliegertruppen (flying personnel) of regimental status or lower. The unfilled flag symbol added to this basicsymbol denotes headquarters, while the filled-in flag symbol indicates units of Fliegertruppen. The basic symbolwithout a flag represents a Staffel; the appropriate headquarters symbol r must be added to show the head-quarters of a Staffel. EXAMPLES:

2. SUPPLEMENTARY LETTERS. The following supplementary letters are employed for the closer
characterization of aircraft and are placed to the right of the basic symbols:

3. SUPPLEMENTARY NUMERALS. Supplementary numerals denoting the number of units (unitsand formations) or headquarters are, as heretofore, placed to the right of the tactical symbols. At the same timethe former method of indicating the numbers of aircraft, weapons, or equipment by placing the appropriatenumerals below the tactical symbols, remains in effect. EXAMPLES:

4. ANTIAIRCRAFT ARTILLERY. The new basic symbol for Air Force antiaircraft is identical withthat of the new symbol for Army antiaircraft. The caliber of weapons is indicated in a similar manner: that is,by placing numerals to the left of the symbols. The method of indicating the number of weapons in a unit bynumerals below the basic weapon symbol remains in effect.
Searchlight units are classified as light (60 cm) and heavy (150 cm). The size of the searchlight is shown bythe letters 1 (or le) or s (light or heavy), or by the numerals in centimeters to the right of the symbol. EXAMPLES:

5. AIR FORCE GROUND COMBAT TROOPS AND THE HERMANN GORING DIVISION. The ~German Air Force ground combat troops (Luftwaffenfeldverbande) and the Hermann Goring Division continue 'to use the'tactical symbols of the Army. However, the letter L (Luftwaffe) in parentheses (brackets) is addedto the unit numbers of the former, whereas the letters HG (Hermann Giiring) (without parentheses) are addedto the unit numbers of the latter.
