Analysis of a composels style, insightinto his background and hainin& evenhis mo tivations for wiiting---+ll of thesethirrgs help us better understand thccreahve impulseand allow us to L€fterperform a composer's music. Yet allthat is for naught if a composer doesnot communicate to his audience. Inconclusion of this short profile of timCumow, let mc add a very brief per-sonal example that I hope witl placethis all in perspective. The LexingtonBrass Band gave its firct concert of thescason just a w€€k ago. In a note re-

ceived after the concert ua our "mail,in' donafion envelopes, a gentlemanwrote: "AIl the sel€\ctions were new tome, but I hoped Cumow's LAUDEwould never end, but like all goodthings, it had to...." It was then that the con-cert took an unexpecH turn. New Music Reviews

Three new releases (1993) have bccnreceived from Rosehill Music. Theyrange from a short arrangement of a TVtheme song to a contemporary treat-ment of the batde ofgood and evil.

A Year ht Protence is the theme song ofa popular British TV show ofthesamenamc. It was composed by Carl Davisand arranged for brass band by DarrolBarry.Themusical style is marked "iGvial" (very French) and is meant toportray the spirit of this part France.The tunebouncesalong in 6/8 time andlastsalmost thre€ minutes.It hasa pleas-ant melody line and no real technicaldemands othcr than some arpeggios inthe accompaniment. There is limitedappeal if the audience is not familiarwith the ry show, but the tune is niceand thc arranSement would be a goodcontrast to Iongcr and heavicr num-bers.

Thc Atnericatt D/srrr was written byElgar Howarth for thc American visitby the Grialethorpe Colli€ry Band backin 1976. There are some interesting e!fects-lots of muted passages andmuted hemolos-in the accompani-mert. The melody stays in 3/4 time,but there is a contrasting duplctcountermelody in the solo hom part.The overall musical effect is unabash-edly impressionistic with some abso-lutely beautiful sounds contained inthc scoring.

The challenge to the perfomers is bosustain both the notes and phrases inthe Lento tempo/ and to sustain themusical interest throughout the fiveminutes of playl^g tlme- AfiericahD/ean is a worthy piece but it willdemand thorough rehearsal and a con-trolled performance to be successful.

ber of a Salvation Army band and isloosely based on the Foundo's Hymn("O Boundless Salvation"). The 1993 SummerBrass Band Workshops

For theeighth cons.'cutiveyearNABBAand Yafiuha Corporation of Americahave co€ponsored a series of five sum-mer brass band workshops. PerryWatson led these workshops for thefirct four years, and Paul Droste hasbeen thc clinician for the past four years.Yamaha s€nds a complete set of brassbard instruments to each clinic site,and also covers the cxpenses of theclinician. Each workshop participantpays a fee to NABBA that covers a oneyear mcmbership.

Thc first 1993 workshop was held on,unc

'l-3 at Fort Monroe, VA. It washostcd by Sgt. David Wittand The USArmy Contin€ntal Band. The brasss:ction of the band was temporarilychanged into a British-style brass band.The workshop covered three days andculminated in a public concert at FortMonroe. Several adults fmm the Nor-folk area also took part in the workhopand thc concert.

The second workshop was hcld onJune18-19 at The University of Toledo inToledo, OH. The hosts were StevcMcconaughy, a former member of TheOhlo Stat€ Univ€Isity Malching Band,and Bemie Sanchez of UT. Manyofthcparticipants are members of local com-munitybands.

The third workshop took place at FoitWalton Beach, FL on July 9-10. lt washosd by Emest Hebson, Band Direc-tor at Fort Walton Beach High School.Several of the adult partcipants wereband directors, and they brought theirshrdents to the workshop.

Workshop number four was held atThe University of South Dakota, lo-cat€d in Vermillion, on JuIy 3G31. Thehost was Richard Bogenrief, a formcrmember of The US Army BrassBand.member of The US Army BrassBand. This area has a tradition of com-munity bands and the players, both
