Gerbrand Burger is a visual artist from the Netherlands. He works with drawing, sculpture, installation, printmaking and film. Architecture and literature are the main domains that inform his work across various media. Literature was his first encounter with art, and has had a major impact on his work.

While reading is the basis for constructing or deducing content, looking at architecture provides cues to possible forms. More often than not these forms are collected by noting them down as drawing first. Forms and narratives are taken apart and rearranged, to make up an intricate and personal visual language.

A generous selection of Gerbrand Burger's drawing archive has been published in his artist book Part of something, co-edited by Marc Nagtzaam and Stephan Keppel.

UNHIDE ALL (2019)

The title is taken from digital sketching software in which the command unhide all shows the structures and constructions behind the digital simulations. Design software, the malleable surface and the artificiality of objects are some of the many sources of inspiration the artist draws on. The exchange between Sein und Schein, between optical illusion and tangible reality are also visible in his threedimensional assemblages. For the occasion of this exhibition the remarkable architecture of the Kunstvereniging serves as inspiration for the work. With two monumental interventions Burger bends the building to his will and offers the visitor unexpected points of view. Part of this installation are also several sculptures that were especially made for this exhibition.

LAYER CAKE UTOPIA (2019)

Comissioned by K-G-B artist intiative in Amsterdam, to be part of the exhibtion Benedenland. How do urban planning and aesthetic norms impact human behavior, interaction, perception and imagination? And how do these social and mental structures in turn affect the artificial environments of the city?

These questions run like a backbone through the evolving exhibition project Benedenland, that has now reached its third and final stage. In the three separate but gradually interwoven parts, Karl Georg Staffan Björk has investigated the radical transformation of Het Breed – a modernist housing complex in Buikslotermeer in Amsterdam Noord. Looking at the time before, during and after the area’s modernization process, the artist has set out to trace and interpret visual manifestations revealing relationships between aesthetics, behavior and ideology. Stretching over more than four years, the project has explored notions like decay, artificiality, isolation and belonging by merging stylistic references to the modernist architecture (light, space and repetition), with how it is filtered through the bodies, minds and habit patterns of its residents.

ATTEMPT TO SKETCH OUT A MAP (2018)

This sculptural work is made for the occasion of an exhibtion in the abandoned building of the Amsterdam Bijlmer prison.

'Het allerbest op zijn plek is het sculptuur Attempt to sketch out a map van Gerbrand Burger. Platen multiplex in grillige vormen zijn achter elkaar geplaatst, als schetsen voor een vluchtroute of de plattegrond voor een gedroomde toekomst. Het werk staat precies onder een stel daklichten, daar gloort de vrijheid. Maar op de achterwand zijn twee enorme surveillancespiegels gemonteerd. Geen ontkomen aan.' The joy of pulling a flat surface into a spatial object in 3d modelling software is the starting point of this sculpture. That instant pleasure is slowed down somewhat by careful handywork, to craft the hollow volumes that describe the space in between the two ends.

MOODBOARD (2018)

This sculpture originates from the realm of digital moodboards for interior design materials. It's inter-esting that the busineses that supply the tangible materials for construction of homes and offices rely on digital collage and illustration, and the creation of atmospheres. This work feeds part of that atmospheric impression back into the physical world.

BANKRUPTCY ASSEMBLAGE #1 (2017)

As part of the site-specific exhibition Krust Gorilla this large wall mounted assemblage fits right in with the messy contents of the exhibition location: the storage space of Butcher's Tears Brewery in Amsterdam. The materials for this work are sourced from an auction of the inventory of a large interior construction company that went bankrupt. The exhibtion deals with architectural environment and surface in the city, and the aesthetic value of our crusty and crappy everyday urban surroundings.

UNTITLED OBJECTS (2016)

These two sculptures were made for the exhibition Ge-stalt, a group show on the estate of castle Nederhorst, south of Amsterdam.

The exhibition also featured works by Maartje Folke-ringa, Paulien Föllings and Hanae Wilke. Curated by Marjoca de Greef of Suns and Stars.

From the curator: 'The perception of oneness from many is the basis of Gestalt; the whole has a reality of its own. In psychology, Gestalt is about connecting. It puts emphasis on gaining awareness of the present moment. The sculptures in this show are open for com-munication and the historic garden of kasteel Neder-horst offers peace and quiet, an essential condition for an actual connection.'

SEVEN MADMEN (2016)

Seven Madmen is a series of seven unique works on paper, made with etching and the chine collé collage technique. The title refers to 'The seven madmen' and 'The flamethrowers', a novel in two parts, written in 1929 by Argentinian writer Roberto Arlt.

The 'objects' depicted may have been bizarre inven-tions by the novel's main character, the gloomy and fatalist inventor Erdosain. The remarkably accurate vision of dark events of the 20th century that Arlt shows in his writing, infuses these mental and physical constructions on paper.

Elements taken from modernist architecture in Argentina are combined with inventions from the drawing archive that Gerbrand Burger has been working on since 2003, forming an idiosyncratic series of emblems.

RIHLA (2009)

This kaleidoscopic travelogue looks at one man's journey from east to west, measuring contemporary European society through centuries of oriental expe-rience, recorded in the writing of Arab travelers.

The voice-over is made as the inner monologue of a fictional character. This character is pieced together from numerous fragments of stories about Arabs traveling to the West. The journey ends in the somewhat claustrophobic streets of Amsterdam.

MOREL'S MUSEUM (2008)

Morel's Museum is an installation that shows a30 minute projected video loop, shot in the Dutch polder landscape to the north from Amsterdam.

Morel's Museum brings together the highly planned and efficient polder landscape and the elusive world of The Invention of Morel, a magical-realist, fantastical science fiction novella by Argentinian writer Adolfo Bioy Casares. In the story a man, washed up on the shore of an island, discovers—and falls in love with—holograms of people, produced by a mysterious machine in a white building.

Through a voice over, in Argentinian Spanish, we share the thoughts of a man wandering around the island, doubting his own sanity while slowly unraveling the wondrous fenomena he's confronted with.

The video screen is mounted inside a model of a pumping station in a scale of 1:20. The actual pumping station, built in 1929, is situated in the town of Medem-blik, one of the shooting locations for the video.

The back of the model building is opened up, so the model functions as a frame around the screen, thus mediating between the video and the exhibition space.

By merging Bioy Casares' story, as a voice-over in Ar-gentinian Spanish, with the polder landscape of Noord Holland and the pumping station that was named after engineer Cornelis Lely, the practical and mundane re-ality of the Dutch polders becomes infused with the tri-umph of imagination over reality of Argentinian fiction.
