1. ScopeThis specifcation covers the quality o geotextiles.
2. General requirementsFibers (threads and yarns) used in the manuacture
o geotextile shall consist o synthetic polymers com-
posed o a minimum o 85 percent by weight poly-
propylenes, polyesters, polyamides, polyethylene,
polyolefns, or polyvinylidene-chlorides. They shall
be ormed into a stable network o flaments or yarns
retaining dimensional stability relative to each other.
The geo-textile shall be ree o deects and conorm tothe physical requirements in tables 5921 and 5922.
The geotextile shall be ree o any chemical treatment
or coating that signifcantly reduces its porosity. Fibers
shall contain stabilizers and/or inhibitors to enhance
resistance to ultraviolet light.
Thread used or actory or feld sewing shall be o con-
trasting color to the abric and made o high strength
polypropylene, polyester, or polyamide thread. Thread
shall be as resistant to ultraviolet light as the geotex-
tile being sewn.
3. ClassifcationGeotextiles shall be classifed based on the method
used to place the threads or yarns orming the abric.
The geotextiles will be grouped into woven and non-
woven types.
WovenFabrics ormed by the uniorm and regular
interweaving o the threads or yarns in two directions.
Woven abrics shall be manuactured rom monofla-
ment yarn ormed into a uniorm pattern with distinct
and measurable openings, retaining their position
relative to each other. The edges o abric shall be sel-
vedged or otherwise fnished to prevent the outer yarnrom unraveling.
Material Speciication 592Geotextile
NonwovenFabrics ormed by a random place-
ment o threads in a mat and bonded by heat-bonding,
resin-bonding, or needle punching. Nonwoven abrics
shall be manuactured rom individual fbers ormed
into a random pattern with distinct, but variable small
openings, retaining their position relative to each
other when bonded by needle punching, heat, or resin
bonding. The use o nonwovens other than the needle
punched geotextiles is somewhat restricted (see note
3 o table 5922).
4. Sampling and testingThe geotextile shall meet the specifed requirements
(table 5921 or 5922) or the product style shown on
the label. Product properties as listed in the latest edi-
tion o the "Specifers Guide," Geosynthetics, (Indus-
trial Fabrics Association International, 1801 County
Road B, West Roseville, MN 55113-4061 or at http://
www.geosindex.com) and that represent minimum
average roll values, are acceptable documentation
that the product style meets the requirements o these
specifcations.
For products that do not appear in the above directory
or do not have minimum average roll values listed, typical test data rom the identifed production run o
the geotextile will be required or each o the specifed
tests (tables 5921 or 5922) as covered under clause
AGAR 452.236-76.
5. Shipping and storageThe geotextile shall be shipped/transported in rolls
wrapped with a cover or protection rom moisture,
dust, dirt, debris, and ultraviolet light. The cover shall
be maintained undisturbed to the maximum extend
possible beore placement.
Each roll o geotextile shall be labeled or tagged to
clearly identiy the brand, class, and the individual pro-
duction run in accordance with ASTM D 4873.
