APPENDIX C FIELD EXPLORATION - RIVER (STA. 0+00 TO STA. 26+00)
The river exploration consisted of drilling and sampling of six 5-inch soil borings using a truck mounted drill rig from a liftboat (self-propelled and self-elevating vessel with legs and a large open deck). The following table gives the details of the explorations:

As shown in the table above, soil borings were sampled continuously in general accordance with United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New Orleans District sampling procedures and applicable ASTM specifications. The river borings predominantly encountered granular soil to a depth of 86 feet below the existing mudline. SPT samples were obtained in the granular deposits. Cohesive and semi-cohesive samples were collected with a 5-inch/3-inch outside diameter (O.D.) thin-wall steel tube sampler using a USACE approved piston sampling technique. The wall thickness of the 5-inch and 3-inch samplers was 0.12-inch and 0.049-inch, respectively. At depths greater than 86 feet, soil samples that could not be recovered using a 5-inch or 3-inch tube sampler were collected using the standard penetration test (SPT) method. In this procedure, a standard 24-inch long by 2-inch O.D. (1½-inch inside diameter) split-spoon sampler is driven into the ground with a 140-pound hammer falling a distance of 30 inches. The penetration resistance is the number of blows required to drive the sampler 12 inches after seating it 6 inches. The field SPT values are included on the soil boring logs. Most of the samples collected in the river were predominantly granular and were SPT sampled. A liner has not been used while collecting the soil samples.
Upon retrieval of the final sample from the soil boring, the hole was backfilled with a portland cement/bentonite grout mixture. A backfill log was maintained for all the explorations.

Immediately upon recovery, samples were classified in the field by GeoEngineers’ field representatives, logged, labeled, and preserved for transport to a soils laboratory. Samples collected using the SPT method were stored in labeled plastic bags to preserve moisture. Five-inch- and 3-inch-diameter thin-wall tube samples were plugged and sealed with caps and tape, labeled, and stored upright to minimize sample disturbance. They were later transported to a laboratory for processing and testing. A photo record was maintained for all the samples that were obtained onsite. If the sample was extruded onsite, the photo included the entire sample and if the sample was in the tube, a picture of the tube was taken in front of a white board with sample description. The photos are stored on a compact disk and a copy of the information will be provided with the final report.
The SPT N-values were corrected in the office for field conditions using the following formula:

The calculated N60 value is reported on the individual boring logs. Where applicable, the corrected SPT N-value was used to determine the consistency or relative density of the soil encountered. The soil boring logs and USACE boring plates for the river borings are included in this Appendix.
