Welcome to winter everyone! You may
notice a few changes to the GSIS Newsletter
this year. The Executive Board voted last
year to move from our 6 issue/year format to
quarterly to better fill our bulletin with
highlights and news and to supplement the
electronic listserv. This spring I will also be
reviewing the brainstorming ideas that were
generated at the GSA meeting in
Minneapolis. Our goal was to formulate ways
that GSIS could tackle issues pertinent to our
members in a more structured way. Thanks to
everyone who participated. All GSIS
members will have a chance to comment
through an e-mail survey later this year.
Some of you may have noticed a downtime
of our GSIS website (http://geoinfo.org) in
the fall. I want to take the opportunity to
thank all of the people involved with getting
this tricky problem resolved as quickly as
possible. Our web site domain registry
company required a bit of paperwork to
authorize any changes made to the host

The winter holiday break is almost over, and
the rush to prepare for the spring semester is
upon us. I am working on updating library
guides to prepare for library instruction
sessions this spring. Many of us have had an
unusually mild winter so far, although this
will probably not last for much longer.
After a bit of e-mail discussion, Lisa
Johnston, Bob Tolliver and I developed a
theme for the GSIS technical session next
fall. The theme will be: Geoscience
Information: Investing in the Future. As we
know, many geoscientists use both recent and
older publications. The transition to digital
publications means that we may have less
control over our collections in the future.
Then there is the spatial data, which can be
used and updated repeatedly over time. I have
given several talks on the need to plan for
archiving spatial data, relating the lifespan of
spatial data to the lifespan of a mayfly (which
hatches, breeds and dies within 24 hours).

Beginning in 2012, the digital GSIS Newsletter will be published quarterly, in March, June, September, and De-
cember by the Geoscience Information Society. Subscription is free to GSIS members. The annual non-member
subscription rate is $40. Please contact the GSIS Publications Manager for paper copy subscription prices. All cor-
respondence regarding dues, membership status, and address changes should be directed to the GSIS Secretary.

servers that AGI graciously maintains for our
site. Therefore, a big Thank You to Sharon
Tahirkheli and Christopher Keane at AGI as
well as the many GSIS members who lent
their experience and institutional memories

Suzanne T Larsen, Elaine Adams, and Janet
Dombrowski.
Finally, another thanks to Janet for all of her
hard work and leadership that has gone into
the newsletter over the past few years! And a
big welcome to Bonnie Swoger who will be
taking over as newsletter editor after this
issue! Bonnie and Janet will be working
together on the next issue to make a smooth
transition.

GeoMAPP, the Geospatial Multistate
Archive and Preservation Partnership, is a
group that has been developing policies and
procedures on data preservation. They
recently posted their final report and a list of
Key Findings and Best Practices on their web
site (http://www.geomapp.net/
documents.htm). I will admit that I have not
had time to digest the information in the
report, but hope to do so soon.
CALL FOR PAPERS
It’s time to start considering ideas or projects
for submission to be presented at this year’s
GSA/GSIS Annual Meeting, which will be
held November 4 – November 7, 2012 in
Charlotte, North Carolina. This year we are
planning to have a GSIS oral technical
session and a poster session. This year’s
session titles are:
GSIS Oral Technical Session: "Geoscience
Information: Investing in the Future"
GSIS Poster Session: "Don’t be a dinosaur:
geoscience information in the 21st century"
Although the deadline for online submission
of abstracts is not until summer, please start
thinking about participating now. As more
details concerning abstract deadline, session
dates and times, etc. become available I’ll
share them via Geonet in the weeks and
months to come.

service. Her replacement has not yet been
appointed.
CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT
24th Polar Libraries Colloquy, June 11-14,
2012: Cold Regions: Pivot Points, Focal
Points
We hope to see you at the 24th Colloquy in
Boulder from June 11-14. The conference
theme is Cold Regions: Pivot Points, Focal
Points. Scientists, economists, and
governments are focused on the evolving role
of polar regions in world affairs. Polar
libraries are evolving as well. What changes
have you noticed in your collections, focus,
or administration as global attention pivots
around the Poles? The colloquy will feature a
number of interesting presentations and
panels, a field trip to one of the coldest labs
in the world, and an experiment with an
“unconference” session (an “unsession”?) to
address practical problems in polar libraries.
We will have a web site up early in 2012, but
until then we wanted to provide some
information on registration fees and
accommodations to help you. Please email us
with any questions.
Approximate registration fees in U.S. dollars
are as follows. There may be slight changes
in the amounts as we get closer, but these are
in the neighborhood:
Early registration: $300
Regular and on-site registration: $350
Single day - Early registration: $110
Single day - regular on-site registration $135
Guest lunch: $15 per lunch
Guest banquet attendance: $70
Registration includes attendance at the
sessions, breaks and lunches each day, a field
trip, and the closing banquet at the beautiful
Red Lion Inn snuggled in the mountains near
Boulder.
The Boulder Inn, http://boulderinn.com/, a
15-minute walk from the conference venue
on the University of Colorado-Boulder
campus, has a block of discounted rooms
available. The Boulder Inn has recently
renovated its rooms and public spaces; some
have views of the mountains. Rates are
$104.00 plus tax per night for a king-sized
bed and $114.00 plus tax per night for two
queen-sized beds. You can make reservations

special rate. They are accepting reservations
for the discounted rate from November 2011

We are looking into an optional excursion to

GSIS TREASURER’S 2011 YEAR-END
REPORT
The Society’s income for 2011 was
$13,024.17. Expenses for the year were
$10,983.62. Therefore, GSIS had a net in-
crease of $2,040.55.
As of December 31, 2011 the balance in the
checking account was $10,735.71 and sav-
ings account was $9,670.99. The Society also
has three CD’s with balances of: General
Funds CD $20,222.07, Ansari Best Reference
Work Award CD $5,864.29, and Ansari Dis-
tinguished Service Award CD $3,526.56. All
of these accounts total to $50,019.62.
GSIS’s 2011 ending balance of $50,019.62
minus the beginning balance of $47,979.07
equals $2,040.55, which agrees with the net
increase tallied on the income and expense
spreadsheets.
Income from sponsorships for the 2011 con-
ference paid for the conference meetings.
GSIS appreciates the work of the GSIS Vice
President, Lisa Johnston, for assembling the
vendor sponsorship.
It should be noted that, once again, there was
very little expense generated by the GSIS of-
ficers and committee chairs.

GEOSCIENCE JOURNAL PRICES

The attached table is a compilation of geo-
science journal prices that were gathered by
December 2011. Prices come from invoices,
serial vendor databases, publisher’s Web
sites, and journal issues. Prices vary depend-
ing on the subscription sources and payment
date, especially for journals which are not
priced in US dollars. Each journal price histo-
ry comes from a consistent source as much as
possible.
Prices may refer to print subscriptions, print
and electronic subscriptions, online-only sub-
scriptions, or journal package subscriptions.
The goal is to maintain a consistent price his-
tory for each title.
Journals were included in this list if they
meet two criteria: 1) the subject fits broadly
in the geosciences; and 2) sufficient price da-
ta are available. The latest title of each jour-
nal is used.
The 2010, 2011, and 2012 subscription prices
and the % price changes for 283 journals are
included in the table. The pool price change
(6%) represents the increase in funds needed
to retain this particular set of journals.
There is so much variability in journal pricing
now that the table should just be used to look
at trends, not to gauge specific prices for a
library.
