Taught graduate-level course EE E6768: Topics in Telecommunications: Multiwavelength Optical Networking. The course provided a fundamental understanding of optical networking based on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). It introduced all the networking aspects associated with a multiwavelength optical network (including switch fabrics, node architectures, routing and wavelength assignment, grooming, multicasting and restoration) and presented the current and future trends in these networks.

Member of the Algorithms and Performance Analysis Group. Conducted research and development of routing, optimization/re-optimization, restoration and grooming algorithms for networks with intelligent optical switches. Lead the architecture team responsible for the architectural design of Tellium’s next generation all-optical switch based on 3-D MEMS technology. Worked on control and management of an opaque network utilizing transparent optical switches. Developed software requirements for an all-optical switch. Designed the fabric architecture and the fabric routing algorithms for Tellium’s opaque optical switches.

June 1998 - Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore) Aug. 2000 Senior Research Scientist

Member of the Optical Networking Research Group in Telcordia’s Applied Research division. Conducted research in the area of optical networks. Work concentrated on protection/restoration techniques in WDM networks, optical label switching and routing, “SONET-lite” protocol specifications, and network security in WDM optical networks using optical labels and diverse routing techniques. Investigated IP over WDM architectures, multicasting in IP over WDM networks and performed studies in bufferless optical packet-switched networks for packet contention resolution utilizing such schemes as wavelength conversion, priorities, deflection routing, fiber delay lines and “escape” to the electronic layer. • Research Grants Funded:

o Co-PI for Next Generation Internet (NGI) proposal titled “Ultra-low Latency WDM Tag Switching Demonstration for Next Generation Internet Networks”. Received $2.31M funding from the Defense Advanced Research Program Agency (DARPA) for duration of 2.5 years.

o Co-PI for Multiwavelength Optical Networking (MONET) proposal titled “New Experiments and Applications utilizing the MONET Testbed”. Received $900,000 funding from DARPA for duration of 1 year.

May - Sep. Tellium Inc. 1999 Research Consultant

Developed and implemented a fault restoration algorithm simulation for mesh optical networks using WDM optical cross-connects. Work involved designing the algorithm and developing a restoration signaling protocol in order to emulate the restoration algorithm.

Feb. 1993 - Columbia University – Center for Telecommunications Research May 1998 Graduate Research Assistant

Conducted research in the area of optical networks. Work was concentrated on fault restoration techniques for multiwavelength optical networks with arbitrary mesh topologies and bi-directional links. A number of techniques were developed for fiber-link and switching node failure restoration in networks with planar, non-planar and Eulerian topologies. Other studies involved fault isolation schemes for transparent optical networks, as well as design and performance analysis of optical networks and optical switch architectures.

Performed connectivity studies for a number of architectures composed of interconnected rings using a variety of protection schemes.

Performed initial studies on packet switching in optical networks. Investigated cycle cover schemes for arbitrary mesh networks and performed optimization

studies, trying to minimize the length of the cycle covers. Investigated switch architectures used for Automatic Protection Switching (APS) in WDM

self-healing rings. Worked on wavelength assignment and scalability issues in WDM self-healing rings. Investigated alarm correlation problems for fault diagnosis and fault isolation in the

network elements used for the Multiwavelength Optical Networking (MONET) testbed. Worked on the implementation of APS in the MONET testbed. The work involved

optical system design in the Windows NT environment. Analyzed hitless reconfiguration in WDM optical networks for ATM transport using fixed

and dynamic wavelength assignment techniques. Developed a wavelength selective cross-connect architecture for interconnecting

multiwavelength self-healing rings. Developed blocking probability models for multiwavelength ring networks. Developed wavelength assignment techniques for 4-fiber multiwavelength self-healing

rings. Developed a parametric wavelength interchanging cross-connect (WIXC) architecture. Worked on the system design, integration and network demonstration of a reconfigurable

WDM/ATM/SONET multiwavelength network testbed (Optical Networking Consortium (ONTC) testbed).

o Set-up an ATM based LAN and studied the properties of the ATM switches. o Set-up the multimedia applications for the testbed. o Developed the network control scheme and a graphical user interface program using

SunView for implementing network control. o Specified the system power budget, and evaluated new system modules added to the

testbed such as erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTFs), wavelength selective cross-connects, attenuators, etc.

o Implemented a data control channel for this network using a dedicated wavelength and developed a Graphical User Interface (GUI) (using Visual Basic) for the control of the optical switches and the monitoring of the user workstations and ATM switches.

o Implemented a commercial network management software (NetExpert) to manage the multiwavelength network testbed.

o Upgraded the GUI used in the testbed to include a selective multicast feature. o Developed a (Unix-based) distributed user-induced control program for the

multiwavelength network testbed. July – Aug. Cyprus Telecommunications Authority 1990 Summer Trainee
