    Introduction to my Concept.

My Concept was to show nature returning, and growing wild. I

also wanted to show how people see it as something that isn'tbeautiful as it hasn't been sculpted and doesn't look as itshould but could possibly be more beautiful.

After looking into the Picturesque and the American West Irealised how there are many different opinions about the land

being Wildanymore. This was something that I wanted to tryand answer in my work, and if not answer at least betterunderstand myself.

To achieve this I wanted to use small fragments or weeds orovergrown areas that in my opinion look wild however still

    show something beautiful about nature.

ResearchAt first I just looked at some artist that we had gone over in some of our lectures that

had really caught my eye. Some that I did look at really helped me decide what I

wanted to focus my project on.

Henry Peach Robinson and Roger Fenton were two of the first artists I looked at and related

to my research into the picturesque. When looking into the picturesque I deicide that I

wanted to focus on showing what I considered beautiful and what people were missing.

Next I looked into the work of William Henry Jackson and Edward Weston. This furthered my

understanding into the American west and how art developed out of the Picturesque. I foundmyself relating to Westonswork and this helped me commit to my concept, and I was now

able to find visual references that would develop my concept further.

    Joe Sternfeld

    Sternfeld was another

    artist that I had looked

    at in lectures and

    wanted to find out more

    about him and his work.

    He photographed the

Manhattan sky line as itwas under threat of

    being knocked down. He

    wanted to show people

how free it had becomeand he believed that it

    was a true untamed

    wilderness.

PaintersI didnt look at that many paintersthroughout my project as I dont

feel that I can get much

    inspiration from them. However I

did come across some of Turners

work that I did find helpful. Flint

castle was the name of the first

image that I had looked at.Through more research into this

artist and painting I found that he

was fascinated by the power of

the sea and natural catastrophes. This image symbolises to me the

strength on nature, and how it

    can over power man kind.

    Finding a Location

The first thing I needed to do after doing my researchwas find different locations to do test shooting. This

would help me decided on what I wanted within my

image and the composition. At first I had to research

places that had been abandoned or shut down. The

first place I looked at was Blue Town. This was asmall village where the dockyard had been shut and

the small village soon started loosing business.

After finding somewhere to shoot I then needed to go

and do some test shooting on a digital camera, this

would again help my understand how I wanted mycomposition.

    Test shooting

Some of my test image didnt work

and I didnt feel that they fitted in my

concept however I did feel that some

work so I wanted to reshoot more

locations on a film camera, and someof the same areas too.

    Constructing my image.

    After deciding on locations and

taking digital test images, I thenhad to decided on what

    photographic techniques I would

use to create my images. I used

only natural lighting and tried to

do all my shooting on a overcast

day as I didntwant the weather to

add another meaning to myimages. I wanted to shoot all my

images from hip height as I felt this

    helped the audience engage with

the image. I also wanted to make

sure all my images related, I

decided that I was going to shoots

similar things and I decided on

railings or fences. To me this

symbolises us as humans trying to

    hold nature back and the

    separation between us.

    Contact Sheets

After taking my images I then

had to chose which images I

was going to use for my finalpiece and if I needed to re take

I can now see what I have to

    change.

    ChangesAfter enlarging my images, I

could then tell what needed to

    be changed or improved.

Some of the images that I wasgoing to use as a final piece

were to dark. This meant I had

to go back and make the

exposure shorted so that it was

    slightly lighter. Also when they

were enlarged I noticed thatthe images had come out very

blue or green and made the

    images look cold. When

working with a series I needed

to make sure all my images

where spot on as I didnt want

any of them to stand out more

    than the rest.

    Final Three Images!

    17/20

This is the image that I felt was

    the weakest and fitted least

with the series. This image is

shot with the focus in the

background, I do feel that this

works well for this image as I

    wanted the audience to be

able to see the whole way

    down the railing. The low

    lighting doesnt distract from

the main focus of the image.

This image out of the treewas my favourite. I felt that

    the lighting was perfect and

the sky is well balanced. I

like the way that the house

and the sky blend intogether. In all the images I

    tried to use symbolisation to

    show the separation

    between people and nature.

By using the railings ive triedto imply that the nature its

    getting blocked out.

I tried to keep the horizon

line in all of my images as Ididnt want to completely

    block out the distance. I

really like this image as it

focuses on a small part of the

    fence were the ivy has

    broken though. By focusing in

one area for my final image it

    really pushes my point about

    small bursts of nature

    gradually pushing though.

Self Evaluation This biggest thing I struggled with was time management, I didntgive myself enough

time in the dark room after taking the images to work on them and get my colour and

exposures perfect. In the future I will try and set myself a time frame to make sure I

know how much time I will need and what Imgoing to be doing.

If I had managed my time better I would have been able to go and find different

locations which would have meant that I had more freedom with the content of my

images, however I dont feel that my final images have been effected by this and still

feel that they communicate my ideas as I expected.

When researching if I was to do this project again I would want to find more visual

references. I did find a few books that interested me but I manly used magazines andjournals. Having visual references always helps me communicate my ideas and gives me

new ones. Although saying this I do feel that the research I have done was very strong

and really helped me move through the project.

I found it quite difficult to find and stick to the right photographic choices for my project

that fit with my idea. Once I had taken images it became apparent to me that not all ofthe choices I had made worked together, this meant that I then had to go a re shoot to

try and make it work. The main thing was that I couldntdecide on a depth of field.

However what I have used in my series I think highlights what I am trying to say very

    well.

However I do feel that all the colours and the lighting in the image all seemed to match

and worked well. All together I feel that my series showed what I wanted to say butdidntshow how well I could say it.
