Once again this year, we have developed several combined classes at Vanier. These classes have proven to be very appropriate learning environments. Despite parent fears that their child will not receive the same quality education as students in classes with only one grade level, research tells us that: • Students in combined grade classrooms achieve as well academically as those in single grade classrooms. • Students appear to benefit from the spirit of co‐operation and mutual help that exists in these settings. We need parents to assist with the following: Distributing fresh fruit and vegetables to classrooms – once every two weeks for about 2 hours. We will pay for the volunteer to do FoodSafe Training. Laminating learning materials for teachers – one every two weeks, also for about 2 hours. We will train. Any time you can offer is greatly appreciated. Please see us at the office if you can assist. LIBRARY NEWS: Learning Commons New Library Blog... Check out the smart updated look of the Georges Vanier Library Website. There are links to some of our new books and websites supporting for our newest theme, "For the Birds" http://georgesvanierlibrary.edublogs.org/ Get Ready... Some wonderful changes will be happening in the Vanier Library this year. We are developing a Learning Commons where students will be given opportunities to develop twenty‐first century learning skills such as collaboration, creation and communication. Students will be using technology , including iPads to enhance their learning. The Learning Commons will have a virtual component, where students will explore and share their learning on‐line, and also a physical component. The library will soon look different. Some of the book shelves will be moved onto the walls and there will be different seating. Stay tuned for updates as we learn how to implement this exciting new project.
