BrickMasters Congratulations to all the students who recently participated in the WHPS BrickMasters challenge. It was great to see the studentsso engaged in the their lego building over the past 8 weeks. We were lucky to have ‘lego master’ Kale Frost attend the school for the judging of our BrickMasters final and also conducting aworkshop for our lego loving finalists. SunsmartA reminder that our Sunsmart policy commences from September. Students are asked to wear their Sunsmart hats for all outdooractivities. We will provide the next two weeks for students to bring their hats and then enforce our ‘NO HAT NO PLAY’ policy. Therefore children are asked to bring their hats (making sure they’re clearly named) from next week. 2020Planning for the 2020 school year is well underway. If you are planning on leaving the school next year, please let me know assoon as possible. This will help to strategically plan for classes and programs for next year. [email protected] Crossing roadsWe regularly hear feedback of times when some of students don’t display safe practices when crossing nearby roads. Students are reminded to concentrate when travelling around roads and especially when crossing roads. We have two crossingsthat are provided to support students travelling to and from school safely. Additionally, students are reminded that the wearing ofhelmets is compulsory for anyone riding or scooting to school. Parents are also reminded to please observe local parkingrestrictions as we often have local council officers patrolling the neighbouring streets and issuing fines accordingly. Diamond Valley Vietnam Veterans and Community Memorial ServiceCongratulations to the school leaders and Miss. Clarke whom recently attended the Vietnam Veterans service on Saturday 17thAugust. This was a great community event and it was wonderful to have our school so admirably and respectfully represented. There is some additional information and photos attached within this newsletter. Please see some recent correspondence from the secretary of the sub branch: We would like to express our gratitude for your school’s representation at our Service last Saturday morning; given the fineweather and the around 300 people present, meant that we had a very successful morning.A major plank of our Service is to engage with the students of the local region and your school’s support is greatly appreciated. Aswe continually strive to get across – the Service is not about glorifying war in any sense but to focus on the 521 young lives lost inAustralia’s Vietnam involvement. Could you please pass on this thankyou to relevant parties in your school but particularly, to the student representatives. As always, please come back to me if you have any queries or require more information about this matter.Cheers,Alan CombenSecretaryDiamond Valley Vietnam Veterans Sub BranchVVAA (Vic)

You may remember from our last newsletter, mysection about research suggesting there are manysocial and academic benefits for childrenthat enjoy dedicated discussion time with their familyover dinner at least three times per week. I mentionedmy intention to include a dinner table discussion starterquestion in each week of the newsletter. This week’s question. If you could time travel, where and when wouldyou go first? Why?

Special Men BreakfastWe have an important day on our calendar approaching this weekend and we took theopportunity this morning to thank and acknowledge all the wonderful men in our lives. Thiswas a great opportunity to bring our community together over a bacon and egg roll (is thereany better breaky tucker in Australian culture?) and provide the opportunity to meet othersand catch up with friends. Our students also got the opportunity to show their specialperson around their classroom and share their learning space. We thank all ourstaff and parent helpers that assisted with the running of our breakfast and wish our fathersand special men in our community a great weekend.

ConcertOur students and staff have been putting lots of effort into their preparations for our whole school concertcoming up this Tuesday. It promises to be a fantastic night and a great opportunity for our students toshine! An event such as this doesn’t come together without a significant amount of work and our teachingand ES staff have been working tirelessly on choreography, lines practice, song rehearsals, set designsand costume designs to ensure a night to remember for our students and their families. Not that we needit, but it is another reminder of how lucky we are to have such a talented andcommitted staff, who go above and beyond for the benefit of our students!

For me, there are many historical events I’d love to experience in person. I’d love to experience life insome of our ancient civilisations. I’d also love to see some of our sporting greats such as Bradman orPharlap live. Having said this, it would also be very tempting to have a glimpse about 30 years into thefuture and get an insight of the world that awaits us. Do I have to pick just one? Have a great weekend everyone, Tony

Visit from Author Nicola Philp To close our Book Week celebrations our grade 3/4 students were very fortunate to welcome 'A Grain of Hope' and'Baby Days' Author Nicola Philp. Nicola shared her love of all things books and how she became an Author to share that love with others. She spoke of how her passion for the rights of refugees drove her to write 'A Grain of Hope' and highlight the plight ofrefugees in Australian Refugee Detention Centres. And why 100% of profits from the book 's sales are donated toRural Australians for Refugees https://www.ruralaustraliansforrefugees.org.au Nicola's first book 'Baby Days' was selected by the Victorian Government to be included in a free baby bundle for first-time parents across Victoria from 17 July 2019 and will go out to almost 35,000 new parents each year. We are grateful that Nicola could give up her time and join us at WHPS and share how no matter what yourbackground, anyone can write a book and share their passions with the world. Please jump on to Nicola's website to read more about her story and both 'A Grain of Hope' and 'Baby Days' wouldmake a beautiful ad unique gift for any book lover. https://nicolaphilp.com

Vietnam Veterans Community MemorialService

Hello WHPS community,as you may have heard at assemblya few weeks ago, on the 17th ofAugust all of the school and vicecaptains, along with Miss Clarke, attended the Vietnam VeteranCommunity Memorial Service atGreensborough War MemorialPark. We lucked out with beautifulsunshine and a clear sky after aweek of rain and clouds!

Together, the captains placed a magnificent wreath on behalf of the school tocommemorate those who lost their lives to save others in the Vietnam War. We were all sohonoured to have the opportunity to take part in such a memorable ceremony. We heardseveral amazing speeches and a beautiful choir from Viewbank College, which featured atalented lady with the Bugle, as well as two songs being sung. This created such a beautifulceremony, as all these musicians were young, and it put forward a strong message ofrespect and effort. We were all truly grateful to lay a wreath at this service and representour wonderful school and our community.

Maths What's happening in 3/4?It has been an interesting term for maths in the ¾classes. Lately we have been working on differentwritten strategies, algebraic thinking and problemsolving tasks. We have been working hard on ourwritten strategies throughout the term, focusing onvertical addition and subtraction with renaming, the boxstrategy for multiplication and long division. While thesestrategies were initially tricky, they have helped us solvelarge maths equations. We have also been focusing on Algebra by focusing onfinding the missing number. We did this by usingfunction machines to work out the rule and pattern andwhether you had to add, subtract, multiply or dividenumbers. Furthermore, we worked a lot on equationswith missing numbers by using the clues we alreadyhad in the sum to help us find the answer. In addition to Algebra, we were also challenged whenwe were given a complicated maths problem regardingthe school concert rehearsal and getting there by bus.We had to find out how many students and teachers aretravelling to the concert rehearsal, how many buses wewill need, what the most efficient bus size we could use, which company would be the cheapest with our schoolsize, the cost for each company and which classes hadto be split or combined to ensure we kept costs down! While this was really challenging if was very satisfyingonce we completed the task.

Inquiry In our Inquiry project we have been researching different cultures. Everybody in our class has a differentcountry to research and find information about. In reading sessions we have been searching sports, food, clothing, famous people and animals from our country. We are writing dot points to summarise theinformation. Then we write a paragraph or two about each section. When we write our paragraph we havebeen doing neat handwriting and we have been trying to make our paragraphs interesting. In addition tothis we have been using VCOP to help us write our paragraphs. We are not allowed to copyright and haveto put all of the information into our own words. It is surprising how different other countries are toAustralia. Written by Charlotte and Zoe

Trinity Manor is a unique, family owned aged care community. Last week 3/4D visited thewelcoming place as a part of our Inquiry topic. The interior was amazing! We are learningabout our community and it was a pleasure to meet all the elders there. We asked abouttheir childhood stories and we showed our writer’s notebooks. The 3/4s will take turnsvisiting the Manor and getting to know the elders there. We hope you get to visit thiswonderful place and learn about the history in our community. Kate & Zoe 3/4D

This year’s book week was such a success. But the mostexciting thing was having the lovely Nicola Philp, the authorof ‘Grain of Hope’. We were two of the lucky students whogot to acknowledge her lovely books and for her to come talkto us in our Library. One of her books, ‘Baby Days’ waschosen to put in a baby bundle. It contains baby toys, ablanket and some books. The government gives itto a families first new born babies. It took Nicola 2 years to create the book ‘A Grain of Hope’. She wrote the book because she feels that sometimesanimals can be treated better than refugees. Nicola knowsabout refugees because she writes letters to a migrant onManus Island where families and children are locked up withno escape. The book shows how a refugee girl feels and howshe escaped from her home country. It also shows about adog that is locked up but then the animal shelter helps it. We learnt a lot of things about refugees and about being anauthor. We feel we are lucky to be in this country becausesome people in other places have to move away from theirhome. They get on illegal, crowded boats to escape to go toa better place that doesn’t have war, shootings and naturaldisasters. It was such a privilege and we hope she comesagain soon.
