Dear Carver Parents and Students,

Following two consecutive years as the principal of Carver Middle School Dr. Ballard granted me the opportunity to take a sabbatical (leave of absence) from Tulsa Public Schools to explore a different academic endeavor. While I was away last year, I was employed as a full-time college instructor for Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology (OSUIT). At OSUIT I taught both lecture and laboratory courses in Biological Science and Human Anatomy. In addition, I also designed and taught a new lecture and laboratory course in Zoology.

Immediately after I graduated from college, I began my career as a scientist. By some twist of fate, I transitioned into the field of education. Since becoming a member of the academic world, I have always made it a priority to be a life-long learner. This year, before we return to business as usual at Carver, I would like to take a moment to sculpt a scenario of what life-long learning is. According to the Commission for a Nation of Lifelong Learners, life-long learning is “ a continuously supportive process which stimulates and empowers individuals….to acquire all the knowledge, values, skills, and understanding they will require throughout their lifetimes…and to apply them with confidence, creativity, and enjoyment in all roles, circumstances, and environments.”

As educators within the Carver community we try to model the kind of life that we envision for our students. That vision includes, but is not limited to, enthusiasm for life, the

love of reading, maintaining a “to-learn” list, cleaning our input of knowledge ,

, YouTube, vs. relevant blogs, scientific literature, American literature, etc.), mak-ing learning a priority, and of course, reaping the rewards of our hard work and dedica-tion. Throughout this newsletter you will find out what members of our faculty and staff have accomplished this summer to continue the Carver tradition of being a life-long learner. In closing, I would like to take a moment to welcome our newest members to the Carver community. We are glad that you decided to join us in our venture to continue to maintain our fine academic tradition. Always remember, at Carver we have an open door policy. Using George Orwell’s classic Animal Farm as a “jumping-off” point, I set off this summer on a fellowship grant through Fund for Teachers to the “green” farms of Vermont. There, I investigated Or-well’s themes about the use (and abuse) of power over the weak by the strong. Orwell meant his book as an allegory for Russian history, but I took him at face value: How could his lessons about political power run amok be applied to the literal animal farm? In a country with severe health problems related to diet, environmentally calamitous farming practices, and hideous cruelty perpetuated toward factory farmed animals, how does the idea that absolute power corrupts absolutely shed light on how we de-stroy our planet and ourselves by not asking simple questions like: What powers and practices brought me the food on my fork? Over a span of nine days up and down Vermont, I immersed myself in the world of responsible, small-scale, non-corporate farming practices. I collected literature, attended tours, interviewed organic farmers, and performed farm work. Filming and photographing as I went, I documented my experi-ences for my students. My odyssey through Vermont took me from larger, wealthier farms (Shelburne and Billings Farms), to small family farms (Applecheek and Hawks Hill Farms), to agricultural educa-tional organizations (Two Rivers Center), to an arts and agriculture summer session for high school stu-dents (the Putney School), to the most localized and integrated natural food system in North America (the community of Hardwick, VT). My journeys even took me, unexpectedly, as far as Watkins Glen, NY, near Ithaca, where for two days I investigated the effects of factory farming at Farm Sanctuary, an organization that rescues, rehabilitates, and houses abused farm animals and educates visitors about the conditions and consequences of industrial farming. The sheer amount of knowledge I gained from my travels surpassed my originally high expecta-tions, and the lessons I have taken away from my journey proved to be as enthralling as they are deeply important. I hope now to bring some of what I learned to my students at Carver.

Jennifer Reiter, 8th grade U.S. History and Government I took 14 former Carver Students and Parents to Washington DC, Gettysburg and Philadel-phia for a week. That is ALWAYS a learning experience. I am also continuing to work on complet-ing my Master's Degree in American History and Government and spent time this summer working on my culminating project. I also participated in the district's ambitious Curriculum Writing Initiative which is a learning experience for everyone involved. Throw in a Colonial Williamsburg workshop and that about rounds out my summer. :)

Loretta Coleman, 6th, 7th, 8th grade Life Management/Personal Development/Teen Living Skills

As a life long learner, I served on the College and Career Academic Council and attended the Teachers as Advisors professional development workshop. I will also attend Summer Conference. The conference consist of two full days packed with workshops, motivational speakers, innovative teaching methods and the most up to date use of technology in the classroom. I have also read numerous articles and newsletters which deal with education.

Melissa Buchanan, 6th grade Math Over the summer I joined the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). This membership has allowed me to read articles (current and back issues) from the maga-zine "Mathematics: Teaching in Middle school". In addition to reading many beneficial articles, my membership allows me access to online E-Seminars. I have been able to listen to 2 semi-nars: "Using Humor in Math Class" and "Effective Instruction for Fractions, Decimals, and Per-cents". I hope to be able to listen to 1 or 2 more before school begins. Finally, I reread the book Hands-On Math Projects with Real-Life Applications by Gary and Judith Muschla which describes how to organize projects in the classroom and then presents many projects that incorporate other disciplines like: Math and Music, Math and Sports, Math and Science.

Teresa Spavins, 8th grade Science/Physical Science Besides learning about teaching positions all around the world, this summer I assisted in the Core Curriculum writing project with TPS collaborating with teachers from around the district. This project not only focuses on aligning our PASS standards with the Common Core, but it provided valuable opportunities for horizontal and vertical articulation across the subject areas and across the district. I learned where my school is in relationship to other schools and where we need to be to remain competitive as the education world continues to change and face new challenges. I also enjoyed learning from my own children a myriad of new ways to see the world and participate in the world. I might even learn to LIKE tennis! And I certainly learned that making me-ringue and homemade pie crust is best left to experts like my daughter. I also learned that TPS is missing the bus when we don't have children's eyes checked for tracking problems. I have a month left, so I am sure there is more I will add to the list!

Dear Carver Families and Friends, Your Carver PTSA board has been busy this summer planning for the new school year. We will continue many of the great efforts from last year including:

• Achieving 100% PTSA membership • Coordinating a weekly information e-mail to parents • Updating the school website’s PTSA page and calendar • Publishing the monthly newsletter, The Wildcat Roar • Offering Logowear sales to provide some school uniform items and Friday

spirit t-shirts • Organizing several meals for teachers/staff and two ice-cream days for

students through Hospitality • Funding the Curriculum Enhancement program for teachers to enhance the

student’s learning experience • Grant $100 per classroom teacher for supplies

Our Jazz N Jeans committee has already put a lot of work into our annual adult dinner/auction fundraiser. Please get involved by serving on the committee or se-curing auction items. Definitely plan to gather a group of family and friends to attend the event and support Carver. PTSA will host a parent or student focused program at each of our unit meetings. Please join us on September 8th for our first unit meeting. The program will be Principal Q&A with Dr. Woolridge. Watch for other meeting program topics to be announced. Refreshments will be provided at all meetings. Please don’t hesitate to contact any PTSA Board Member with any questions. Our wonderful fall fundraiser is just a few months away and we want our Carver community to start getting excited now! Mark your calendars because you won’t want to miss this super fun, casual adult

evening of great music, food, and friends! Not to mention the great items offered for auction!

We need help organizing the event and would love volunteers! Your time is greatly appreciated and it’s really a great way to meet other Carver parents, teachers and staff! Many different levels of help are needed so don’t hesitate even if you can only do a little! Our Carver staff always does such a great job with “Teacher Treasure” items, and this year they are going to be great! Also, many student clubs and groups will be collaborating on items. Anyone can donate an item and the time to start asking for dona-tions is now. We need help from all Carver parents to make our auction successful! It’s so easy and even if you have never been to or helped with an auction before.

What can be donated? Just about anything!

Some examples are following

Goods – House wares, artwork, jewelry, electronics, sporting goods, memorabilia, furniture

Services — Dance lessons, photography session, or art classes, fitness, camps, tutoring, home im-provement, dental services, birthday parties

Gift certificates — Restaurants, sporting events, travel, hotels, entertainment, museums

Time and talents — Tours, classes, memberships, hosting of a party

Wine – Wine pull

Baskets- Design a basket with your favorite theme, OU, Purple, Games, Movies whatever strikes your fancy or things you think you can get donated!

Every gift is appreciated and smaller donations can be combined with others to create bid packages that draw big bids during the silent auction. Of course, every donation is tax-deductible and donors will be

provided with a tax receipt.

Game Times will be 7th grade at 6pm

Football conditioning started on July 5th from 6 to 7 pm in the Carver foot-ball stadium. It is not too late to come out for football, but must have completed athletic package. The athletic package will be located in the main office.

Basketball tryouts for girls and boys will be in late August or the first of September. Inter-ested students will have to sign up in main office. Students must sign-up to tryout due to grade check requirement. Students with any D's or F's on Powerschool report will be ineligible for

tryouts.

Fundraiser

All school fundraiser will be Blue and Gold sausage. We need to raise about $5000 for

Medication authorization forms must be completed each year for all medications, including inhalers.

Prescription medications must be clearly labeled with student’s name, date, and instructions for administration.

Non-prescription medications (over the counter) must be in the original container, and labeled with instructions for administration to student.

For all medication carried by the student, a self-administration form must be completed. The student’s physician or dentist must sign the form.

Students, who are minors, may not transport controlled medications such as Ritalin.

Medication left in the school health clinic after the last official day of classes will be discarded, according to school policy.

Expired medications will not be allowed. To obtain a copy of the mediation policy, please contact the school nurse by calling the Carver main office at 918-925-1420.

The Time Management Book TM is a required tool for students at Carver, and can be pur-

chased at school for $5.00. The TM is designed to help students be successful in school.

Successful students use their TM books EVERYDAY at school... and they also take them

home. What better way to get parents on the learning team? Not only does the TM list stu-

dents’ homework assignments, but it also has the school calendar, the uniform code,

school policies, important quotes and learning ideas AND serves as a hall pass! Quite the

versatile publication! Please read the expectations below to understand Carver’s TM objec-

tives:

HOW CAN PARENTS USE THE TM?

Show your child how to set goals—check the information in front of the TM.

Show your child how to manage time— again check the front of the TM.

Show your child how to enter an assignment in the TM, with its due date.

Encourage your child to check off a task when it has been completed.

TM Book Objectives
