Boys and girls win Class C Eastern MaineBoth narrowly fall toWayneflete at states

By ANNE BERLEANTMost of the GSA boys and girls tennis

teams accomplishments this season could befollowed by the word ‘again.’

The boys team won the Class C regionalchampionship—again. This is the ninth timethey’ve brought home the trophy in 11 years, this time shutting out the Madawaska Owls 5-0.

And the girls team won the Class Cregional championship—again, repeatingtheir 2011 performance. This year they hadthe pleasure of closing out the season’s top-ranked team, the Van Buren Crusaders, 5-0.

The girls played top-form tennis throughoutthe post-season, losing only one match againstCalais in the quarterfinals and one matchagainst Mattanawcook in the semis.

All three singles players—Sotherd Steer,Charlotte Reiter and Maddie Theoharidis—swept their opponents in the quarters andsemis, as did doubles team Grace Bugbeeand Ramsay Williamson.

“We’ve got a good mix of veterans,” saidgirls Coach Tim Farrar, in a “very competi-tive season.”

Against Van Buren in the finals, senior

Maddie Theoharidis dropped just one gamein the third singles match, rolling overNatasha Bourgoin 6-1, 6-0. The seconddoubles team of sophomore Maggie Keatingand junior Ye Zhang followed suit with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Chantal Rioux and FelishaBouchard.

Clinching the regional title in secondsingles, sophomore Charlotte Reiter defeatedParise Rossignol 6-1. 6-3.

The last two match wins were pure gravyas seniors Ramsay Williamson and GraceBugbee squeezed out a first doubles, two-setwin, 6-4, 7-5 over Courtney Parent andChantal Deveau, followed by GSA’s topgirls singles player Sotherd Steer over HaleyLizoitte 6-4, 6-0.

On the boys side, the team rolled into post-season play with a 14-2 record.

“[I’m] pretty confident,” Jasper Adam,GSA’s number two singles player saidbefore facing quarterfinal play on May 31 atthe Bangor Tennis Club.

That could describe the whole team, too. Adam and number three singles player Alex

Heilner dropped only two games each inmatches against Fort Kent in the quarters andHoulton in the semis. Number one singlesplayer Johnny Xue won both his matches intwo sets, following up his strong showing at

the state singles championship May 25-26,where he made it to the round of 16.

In doubles play, the Eagles also out-playedtheir opponents, not giving up a set in thequarters or semis. Jason Gao’s forehandstrength was on display against Fort Kent, with partner Roy Xu handling much of theplay at net.

By the time the boys faced Madawaska inthe regional finals, they were on a roll.

Second doubles team Nick Dillon and EdLameyer cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over EthanWetmore and Sam Dechaine, while Jason Gaoand Roy Xu took the first set 6-1 against GregFancher and Aaron Thibeault and then battledto a 6-4 second set finish for the match win.

In singles play, Alex Heilner easily heldoff Mat Deschesnes at third singles at 6-2, 6-1, securing the regional win for the Eagles.

Second singles player Jasper Adamcruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Jake Goudreauand first singles player Johnny Xue defeatedIan Lee 6-1, 6-4.

With the regional wins in their pockets, theboys and girls teams headed to the stateswith Wayneflete Flyers on the opposite sideof the nets—again. Last year the boys lost 3-2 and the girls 4-1 to the Flyers.

In this year’s matches, “both teams put ascare in Wayneflete early on in the competi-

tion,” boys coach Larry Gray said, beforethey fell to the Flyers.

The boys lost 5-0, giving Wayneflete aneasier time this year, with Jasper Adamsqueezing out one set in a tie-breaker againstIsaac Salas, before losing the match 6-7(3),6-1, 6-0. Both doubles team lost in three-setbattles, but Johnny Xue and Alex Heilnerweren’t able to take a set from their oppo-nents in singles play.

The girls battled but ultimately fell 3-2 tothe Wayneflete team. They lost their openingdoubles match when Maggie Keating and YeZhang fell 6-2, 6-1 to Abby Cough andSophie Raffel, followed by singles defeatsby Maggie Thoeharidis and Sotherd Steer, both in two sets.

First doubles team Grace Bugbee andRamsey Williams came back from a first-setloss to defeat Phoebe Syva and HanaeMiyake 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, and in the third singlesmatch, Charlotte Reiter prevailed 10-8 in adeciding super-tiebreaker after splitting thefirst two sets with opponent Emily Trafton.

With seniors Sotherd Steer and JohnnyXue named Penobscot Valley ConferenceClass C Players of the Year, and “a numberof players selected to the PVC all-starteams,” Gray said this was “a great year forboth tennis teams.”

Baseball team shuts out Stearns; loses to top seed Orono in quarterfinal

By JESSICA BROPHYLast year, the George Stevens Academy

baseball team made it to the playoffs but lostin the preliminary game to Stearns HighSchool, finishing fifth overall.

This year, the team faced Stearns again inthe preliminary playoff on Tuesday, June 5,with a substantially different outcome.

The Eagles shut down eighth-placeStearns 7-0, with Schuyler Van der Ebpitching a no-hitter into the sixth and

William Ricker closing in the seventh for atwo-hit shutout.

Offensively, Gavin Rogers had a big gameand singled, drove in a pair of runs andscored twice. Cooper Smallidge had a singleand an RBI and also scored. Ben Olivarisingled and scored a run.

The Eagles then headed to the regionalquarterfinals to face top seed Orono onThursday, June 7.

Coach Dan Kane said the team put in a

solid effort against the best pitcher in theleague. Orono topped GSA 10-0.

“We had a hard time getting going onhim,” said Kane of Orono’s pitcher. BenOlivari singled twice.

Overall, Kane thought the season was anexcellent one.

“We had a lot of new faces on the team, and they stepped up and represented them-selves and the school well,” said Kane.

The team’s defensive skills were “key for

us,” added Kane. “We had one of thestronger teams defensively.”

Part of the team’s success was excellentleadership on the part of seniors SchuylerVan der Eb and Ben Olivari, said Kane.

Theirs will be big shoes to fill next year, asthe two represent the number 1 and number2 pitchers on the team. Kane feels the talentis already there on the team.

“It was a really successful season,” saidKane. “I’m looking forward to next year.”
