Tatham Department of Geological Sciences The University of Texas at Austin For the past twenty-five years, seis- mic shear wave data have been applied in various parts of the petroleum explo- ration and production industry. Since direct sources of shear-wave energy were often deployed, data acquisition was generally limited to land locations. Fur- ther, concerns about receiver coupling also limited recording of mode-converted shear waves from conventional sources to land environments. In recent years, multicomponent seismic data acquisi- tion has been successfully extended into the marine environment through 3-C and 4-C bottom cable recording using conventional air-gun sources. Mode-converted shear-wave energy has been quite effectively recorded and processing capabilities are rapidly evolving. The actual interpretation and application of these data, however, has not experienced as rapid a rate of progress as the evolution of acquisi- tion and processing technology. This lecture focuses on where we stand as an industry in the application of multicomponent data, experience of end users and how they can incorpo- rate multicomponent data into their in- terpretations, and the status of effec- tive interpretive models requited to fully exploit the potential of the informa- tion contained in multicomponent seis- mic data. This includes a review of published results demonstrating the ex- istence of many applicable interpretive models and how they have been suc- cessfully applied. Further improve- ment of communications among tech- nology implementers and developers will reduce apparent barriers to widespread application of these technologies. One barrier to widespread applica- tion of 4-D P-wave and shear (P-SV) wave data acquired in marine environ- ments has been limited experience and understanding by asset team interpret- ers of just how to use these new types of data offered by technology develop- ers. This limitation in actual application of data may be a result of either the pau- city of effective interpretive models or a failure of technology developers to com- municate potential application tech- niques to the ultimate users. For the past twenty-five years, seis-mic shear wave data have been appliedin various parts of the petroleum explo-ration and production industry. Sincedirect sources of shear-wave energy wereoften deployed, data acquisition wasgenerally limited to land locations. Fur-ther, concerns about receiver couplingalso limited recording of mode-convertedshear waves from conventional sourcesto land environments. In recent years,

multicomponent seismic data acquisi-tion has been successfully extendedinto the marine environment through3-C and 4-C bottom cable recordingusing conventional air-gun sources.Mode-converted shear-wave energyhas been quite effectively recorded andprocessing capabilities are rapidlyevolving. The actual interpretation andapplication of these data, however, hasnot experienced as rapid a rate ofprogress as the evolution of acquisi-tion and processing technology.

This lecture focuses on where westand as an industry in the applicationof multicomponent data, experience ofend users and how they can incorpo-rate multicomponent data into their in-terpretations, and the status of effec-tive interpretive models requited to fullyexploit the potential of the informa-tion contained in multicomponent seis-mic data. This includes a review ofpublished results demonstrating the ex-istence of many applicable interpretivemodels and how they have been suc-cessfully applied. Further improve-ment of communications among tech-

nology implementers and developers willreduce apparent barriers to widespreadapplication of these technologies.

BiographyDr. Robert Tatham is a professor of

exploration geophysics in the Depart-ment of Geological Sciences at the Uni-versity of Texas at Austin where he holdsthe Shell Oil Companies CentennialChair in Geophysics. His 30 years ofindustry experience includes researchand exploration positions at Texaco andGeoSource.

In 1967, Dr. Tatham completed hisB.S. in physics from California StateUniversity at Northridge and immedi-ately began his career in geophysics withTexaco. Initial activities at Texaco in-cluded processing of digital seismic data(then a new technology) and progress-ing to interpretation of data from eastTexas, south Texas, and the Gulf of

Mexico. While working in this early as-signment, Dr. Tatham studied at theUniversity of Houston and completed hisM.S. in applied geophysics in 1970. Ayear later, he began studies at theLamont-Doherty Geological Observa-tory of Columbia University and wasawarded his Ph. D. in 1975.

Dr. Tatham is actively involved inSEG activities. He has served as anAssociate Editor for GEOPHYSICS(1990-1997), has been chair of the SEGResearch Committee, where he contin-ues active participation, and has servedas the President of the Geophysical So-ciety of Houston (1997-1998). Con-tinuing activities include involvementwith integrating geophysical, geologicaland reservoir engineering activities.

Dr. Tatham has published exten-sively on a variety of topics in explora-tion geophysics, including co-authoringthe book “Multicomponent Seismologyin Petroleum Exploration”, currently inits third printing. His dozens of publica-tions include not only numerous paperson shear wave topics, but data process-ing and reservoir geophysics as well. Heis an active member of the SEG, GSH,AAPG, SSA, AGU and SPWLA.

Title:The Inverse Problem: Predicting Reser-voir Properties from Seismic Data

The Scientific Method involves per-forming an experiment with a set ofknown variables and observing the re-sults. This is called a Forward Model. TheForward Model is repeatable and theresults are always the same. When wecollect geophysical data, Seismic, Grav-ity data, Magnetic data, MT or whatever,we are performing an experiment thatis a Forward Model. When we interpretseismic data, we don’t know exactly whatthe subsurface conditions were, but wedo know what the experiment was andwe know the results. From this informa-tion we have to ‘backward infer’ the sub-surface conditions. This process isknown as inverse modeling. One majordifference between forward and inversemodeling is that there are many possiblesolutions to the inverse model that willgive the same results. In fact, all inter-pretation is a form of inverse modelingand that is why there is uncertainty ingeological interpretation.

Methods of predicting reservoirproperties from seismic (and well) dataare generally forms of inverse modelingor called Inversions. There are gener-ally 3 types of inversion techniques;

1) Acoustic Inversion: Can predictDensity, Velocity, and Porosity

2) Elastic Inversion: Lithology, netpay, and fluid or gas contentfrom incompressibility, rigidity,and Poisson’s ratio

3) Shape Attribute inversionEach method from 1 to 3 involves

more information as input, and providesprogressively more reservoir informationas output.

Acoustic inversion uses only thestacked P-wave data and is often calledRecursive Inversion. Basically, it is a run-

ning sum of the changes in impedanceor the integration of the trace reflectioncoefficients. Elastic inversion addition-ally uses shear wave data. Shape at-tribute Inversion requires well control andmay use P or S wave or gather data,and will often be very statistically basedand may use AI or Neural Networks.Most of the service contractors offervariations of most of these types of in-versions, and there are some differencesin approach. There is also excellent in-version software available.

There is no ‘best’ Inversion tech-nique; there are a number of factors thatwill influence results. The right choicemay depend on the type of data avail-able, the area studied, budget and timeconstraints, or other factors. In the earlyexploration stage recursive inversionmay be used, as it requires no well con-trol. Later, as wells are drilled, elastic orshape-attribute inversion should be usedto take advantage of the additional in-formation added by well control. Anyinversion may be scaled or calibrated toexisting well control.

One can reduce risk by modelingmany different geologic conditions tounderstand the possible range of validsolutions. Also, if a model can be veri-fied by using several different inversionmethods on the data, risk is reduced.Alternatively, if a model is not confirmedby one inversion method, it is should bediscarded.

The two basic limitations of the In-version method should always be keptin mind and those are that inversion doesnot have a unique solution, and that seis-mic is a band-limited dataset.Bandlimitation has two main conse-quences; it’s upper frequency limitsmean that thin beds cannot be resolved,and it’s lack of DC component meansthat inversion results must be calibratedto real well control and may be strictlyvalid only for a certain depth range.

Nevertheless, Inversion offers us away to get more information from ourdata, and offers the possibility to fairlyaccurately predict reservoir propertiesdirectly from seismic data. This has beena major goal for many exploration andproduction geophysicists. It is now pos-sible to accurately measure reservoir

volumes, predict well productivity, opti-mize complex development plans, mapmeandering channel complexes, carbon-ate reefs, deltas, dune fields or any othertype of stratigraphic feature, monitorwater floods, and map field depletion.

Born Feb. 9, 1953 in Des Moines,Iowa to Robert and Patricia Swearingen.His father was a Marine Corps Officerand the family moved often. His parentslater divorced and his mother remarriedPaul G. Berge who adopted him. Hegraduated from High School atMiddleton High School in MiddletonWisconsin, a suburb of Madison Wiscon-sin. He worked at the University of Wis-consin as a research assistant in HighEnergy Physics and worked on E259under Drs. Pondrem and Prepost andhelped in the discovery of the Pion, asub-atomic particle. He helped constructand run the experiment at ArgonneNational Laboratory in Chicago andanalyzed the collected data at Madison.He attended Beloit College and latertransferred to the University of Wiscon-sin, Madison Wisconsin where he earneda Bachelor of Science degree in Geol-ogy and Geophysics in 1976. He be-came interested in Geology through anUncle, Dr. Lowell Laudon, who was aprofessor at UW and lived nearby.Lowell influenced several generations ofUW geologists. At UW he was a LaFolletScholar, assistant curator of the Geol-ogy Museum, and worked as an assis-tant to the Ross Ice Shelf. From 1976to 1980 he worked as a roughneck,mudlogger, and owned and operated amudlogging service company. In 1979he enrolled at the University of Texas atAustin where he earned a Master of Artsin Geology in 1981. While at UT he wasa teaching assistant and taught OpticalMineralogy and Petrology, Field Meth-ods, and Introductory Geology. His the-sis was in Structural Geology under thedirection of Dr. Bill Muelhberger in theChihuahua Tectonic Belt. In 1981 Hejoined Exxon Co. USA where he workedfor 17 years in Denver, Midland, Bogota

Abstract:The Identification of Fractures and In-version for their Properties from Multi-component DataBy Steve Kelly, PGS Seres

In recent years, there has been muchinterest in the use of multicomponentseismic technology to identify the loca-tion, intensity and direction of fracturesin hydrocarbon reservoirs. These ob-jectives have already been met, at leastin part, in a number of field data stud-ies. Early experiments used shear-wavesources. It was recognized that the in-terpretability of the resulting, shear-wavesections could be enhanced by introduc-ing kinematic manipulations in order tounravel the cross-mixing introduced bybirefringence. As a bonus, these proce-dures provided all the information nec-essary to determine both the magnitudeand the direction of the weakmicrofracturing that caused the birefrin-gence. This transmission-related infor-mation also proved to be useful for de-fining the fracture directions in reservoirrock, provided that the principal direc-tions were the same as those for themicrofracture-bearing overburden. Laterefforts exploited the unique character ofshear-wave reflectivity to directly deter-mine lateral variations in fracture con-centration. More recently, marine OBSstudies and budget-minded land surveyshave attempted to use birefringencemeasurements from the shear-wave legof mode conversions (C waves) in orderto extract fracture information. There

is the additional hope that C-wavereflectivity can be used with the sameeffectiveness as shear-wave reflectivityfor high-resolution fracture delineation.Finally, in an unexpected twist of fate,our acquisition/processing paradigm hascome “full circle,” as the utility of pureP-wave information is once again beingconsidered for fracture analysis.

In this seminar, I discuss an inver-sion strategy that I developed severalyears ago when I was a student at UTD.The strategy is a result of conclusionsthat I developed while analyzing somecommercially-processed, 2D, post-stackdata that had been acquired in SE Texasusing a compressional source and a lineof multicomponent geophones. Theinversion integrates an amplitude-basedprocedure that can provide a high-reso-lution measure of fracture propertieswith an automated, correlation-based, ki-nematic technique that provides fractureestimates with low spatial resolution.The theory for the dynamic part of theinversion is based on the observation thatlocalized pockets bearing plane-parallel,vertical fractures will yield ?anomolous?mode conversions from wave type P towave type SH in a layered medium. Theinversion can be performed on eitherpre-stack or post-stack data, but it re-quires that the reflectors be approxi-mately flat. Preprocessing is requiredto remove the imprint of shear wave bi-refringence from the data prior to theamplitude-based inversion. Examplesare provided using both synthetic dataand the Texas field recordings.

The recent advent of fast, inexpen-sive personal computers (PC’s), is revo-lutionizing modern seismic-depth imag-ing. Prices for supercomputer style com-putation, graphical display, and datastorage, halve every eighteen months.

Modern networking technologiescouple inexpensive PC’s into powerfulclusters that easily solve problems oncethought intractable on far more expen-sive machines. It is now feasible to uti-lize accurate, computationally intensivealgorithms to calculate multi-componenttraveltime tables in complex transverselyisotropic media with arbitrary axis ofsymmetry. Data are efficiently imagedusing full-waveform Kirchhoff or moreaccurate downward continuation tech-niques. Full waveform synthethics canbe generated economically. While thesedevelopments have been dramatic, whathas not changed is our need to under-stand and differentiate between impor-tant and unimportant parameters. Wemust place exploration value on new

technologies. In this talk we take a smallstep toward this goal. We focus on pa-rameterization of anisotropic media andadaptive most-energetic raytracing in theresult. We discuss the construction ofanisotropic models and, through synthet-ics, show that even in weakly anisotro-pic cases dramatic results can be ex-pected. We argue that the next genera-tion in seismic imaging will include theroutine estimation and utilization of elas-tic earth parameters.

Abstract:Geophysicists require state-of-the-

art, real-time, high-speed data acquisi-tion and data visualization. Computerscience technologies can provide fast,robust, multi-threaded, modular, net-work-distributed real-time and near real-time systems. These tools provide a pathtoward high resolution, high quality con-trol surveys. Numerous examples will beprovided of application of real-time vi-sualization to shallow (environmental)geophysical surveys. This talk will pro-vide an overview of a range of near-real-time data visualization methods, and il-lustrate how the applications of thesemethods will drive environmental geo-physics toward highly automated datacollection methodologies.

Key Patterns of Corporate Organizationand Culture Influencing Exploration Per-formancePeter R. Rose and Gary P. CitronRose & Associates, LLP.Austin, Texas

Recent independent studies docu-ment that companies managing petro-leum exploration using (1) integratedgeotechnical prospect and play assess-ment; (2) systematic probabilistic riskanalysis; and (3) venture selectionthrough centrally coordinated portfoliomanagement clearly outperform com-panies that do not. This has naturallyprompted great interest in sophisticatedmathematical and software tools andsystems that enable routine applicationof portfolio theory, real options theory,and decision analysis.

To be effective, however, such ad-vanced management tools must rely onobjective geotechnical input — that is,the estimates of key geotechnical param-eters must be free of bias. Outperform-ing companies reduce bias through dis-ciplined linkage of integratedgeotechnical work, probabilistic riskanalysis, and applied learning from post-drill well reviews. Then they select thoseventures which optimize portfolio per-formance, consistent with acceptablerisk. But the primary problem remainsthe input — not the tools — and firm,consistent process implementation isessential, reinforced by positive incen-tives.

Analysis of many active E and Pcompanies indicates that organizationaland cultural patterns of underperformingfirms encourage biased geotechnical in-put, and discourage centrally coordi-nated portfolio management. Subjec-tivity, intuition, salesmanship, and geo-politics flourish in the absence of con-sistent probabilistic procedures, thus

HGS Dinner Meetingpromoting persistent motivational bias,mostly as prospect overestimation. Ob-jective and consistent assessment of pre-dictive performance is neither requirednor evaluated. Decentralization of ex-ploration decision-making into autono-mous business units necessarily reducesthe selective power of portfolios, andallows inferior projects from some busi-ness units to replace superior projectsfrom others. Incentives often work atcross-purposes to efficient portfolio per-formance and correct corporate goals.The result is general underperformancerelative to centrally coordinated E&Pfirms.

Companies who purposefully under-take to improve persistent explorationunderperformance should anticipate(and encourage) substantial changes toboth their organizational structure as wellas their prevailing professional culture,if they are to succeed.

Geology, University of Texas at Austin)is a certified petroleum geologist whowas Staff Geologist with Shell Oil Com-pany; Chief, Oil and Gas Branch of theU.S. Geological Survey; and Chief Ge-ologist and Director of Frontier Explo-ration for Energy Reserves Group, Inc.[now BHP Petroleum (Americas), Inc.].In 1980, he established his own inde-pendent oil and gas consulting firm,Telegraph Exploration, Inc. His clientsinclude most major U.S. companies andmany prominent independents as wellas many international firms and state oilcompanies. Dr. Rose has explored foroil and gas in most North American geo-logical provinces and has published andlectured widely on U.S. resource assess-ment, basin analysis, play development,prospect evaluation, and risk and uncer-tainty in exploration. He has taughtextensively at the professional level andwas a 1985/1986 AAPG DistinguishedLecturer. Since 1989 he has beendeeply involved in design and implemen-

tation of comprehensive exploration riskanalysis systems for executive manage-ment of many major oil companies,operating in both the Domestic and In-ternational theaters. His courses em-phasize the link between geoscience andmaking money in the business of petro-leum exploration. Dr. Rose was 1996/97 President of AAPG’s Division of Pro-fessional Affairs, and received the cov-eted Parker Memorial Medal from theAmerican Institute of Professional Ge-ologists in 1998. He is the ManagingPartner in a newly established consult-ing firm, Rose & Associates, LLP (R&A).

GARY P. CITRON (BS, Geology,State University of New York at Buffalo;MS Geology, Cornell University; Ph.D.,Geology and Geophysics, Cornell Uni-versity) joined Telegraph in February1999 after 19 years with Amoco. He isa certified Petroleum Geologist whoworked at Amoco as a geophysicist, su-pervisor, manager, planner and consult-ant. In his last assignment, with Amoco’sProspect Quality Team, he worked withexploration teams worldwide for fouryears, helping them assess prospectcomponent ranges and associatedchance factors. Dr. Citron has devel-oped expertise in consensus-building inrisk assessments and performance track-ing. He also coordinated the yearly postappraisal of the exploration drilling pro-gram, which helped develop, dissemi-nate and institutionalize learningthroughout the exploration department.Prior to that, he coached Amoco’s man-agers on planning, exploration perfor-mance measurement and work processissues. He has worked most of the U.S.domestic trends as an explorer and man-ager, with special emphasis on the Gulfof Mexico. In 1999 he was selected bythe AAPG to serve in their Visiting Ge-ologist Program. While at Amoco Dr.Citron actively mentored younger geo-scientists on prospect measurement andassessment. “California’s Electricity Woes: A Visionof the Future?”

Talk SummaryCalifornia has long been in the van-

guard of national trends. Since mid-2000, California has experienced a con-siderable number of problems with itselectricity market, including fluctuatingprices and shortages. California’s elec-tricity woes give us a reason to takepause and consider the future of U.S.electricity markets and of energy poli-cies in general.

Electricity is an important part of theU.S. energy infrastructure-accountingfor more than one-third of U.S. energyconsumption. If other states experiencedproblems with their electricity marketssimilar to those in California, the effectswould be felt throughout the economy.

Nearly half the states are restructur-ing their electricity markets, and manymore are considering doing so. Eightstates have already implemented restruc-turing of their electricity markets. Six-teen states and the District of Columbiahave enacted legislation or issued regu-latory orders that will restructure theirelectricity markets. Eighteen states areinvestigating the possibility of restructur-ing their electricity markets. Only eightstates are not currently taking any stepstoward electricity market restructuring.

The problems with the Californiaelectricity market are the result of sev-eral factors, including a poorly devisedrestructuring that took place nearly threeyears ago. As the states progress towardrestructuring their electricity markets, weshould ask: Are California’s electricity

woes a dark vision of the future or anisolated incident in a state wherepolicymaking was not sufficiently in-formed by economic reality?

Speaker BioStephen P. A. Brown is director of

energy economics and microeconomicpolicy analysis at the Federal ReserveBank of Dallas. In this position, he con-ducts and manages economic researchand analysis. He also briefs the Bank’spresident and board of directors on eco-nomic conditions and policy. His man-agement responsibilities include energyeconomics, microeconomic public policyand the Bank’s publications Economicand Financial Review and SouthwestEconomy.

He holds a B.S. in economics fromCalifornia Polytechnic State Universityand an M.A. and Ph.D. in economicsfrom the University of Maryland. He alsohas completed a number of leadershiptraining programs, including the execu-tive development program at the Fed-eral Reserve Bank of Dallas and severalat the Center for Creative Leadershipin Greensboro, North Carolina.

Brown is the author of numerousarticles on economic policy, economictheory and business conditions. His re-search focuses primarily on energy, en-vironmental and natural resource eco-nomics, microeconomic public policyand economic conditions. His articleshave appeared in such publications asBusiness Economics, The Energy Jour-nal, Contemporary Economic Policy,Economic and Financial Review, Jour-nal of Environmental Economics andManagement, Public Choice and South-west Economy.

His work has received national andinternational attention from academia,the business community, governmentand OPEC. ABSTRACTThis study is based on the joint venture

(WesternGeco and TGS NOPEC) Phase 46, 16,000-line-mile 2D seismic and gravity/magnetic programthat was acquired, processed, and interpreted from1997-1999. It consists of a 2 x 2 mile grid (16,100mi2), covering parts of Main Pass, Destin Dome,Viosca Knoll, Mississippi Canyon, Desoto Canyon,Atwater Valley, and Lloyd Ridge. Water depths rangefrom 75 feet to over 10,000 feet. Geological con-trol from 44 biostratigraphy wells helped calibrateseven mapped horizons. In addition, a velocity cubewas generated from this dataset.

A Cretaceous carbonate shelf, a prominent es-carpment to the southeast, dominates the east andnortheast portions of the survey. It is overlain byprimarily regressive Cenozoic clastics. West of thecarbonate shelf is a Miocene to Plio-Pleistocene shelf/slope/fan complex. The shelf facies is developedin the northwest and progresses through slope todeepwater fan deposits toward the southeast. Thiscomplex contains numerous allochthonous salt bod-ies. In general, autochthonous salt structures arepresent east of the detached salt, underlying the slopefan complex. These continue eastward to the Cre-taceous shelf edge.

This region is becoming an increasingly attrac-tive area to explore. For example, “Crazy Horse” inMississippi Canyon (MC) Block 778 is a recent subsaltdiscovery within the study area.

BiographyNorman E. Biles received a BS in physics from

Lewis and Clark College, and an MS (1966) in geo-physics from New Mexico Tech. He worked forPhillips Petroleum from 1966 to 1988 in data pro-cessing and international/domestic exploration.Consulted for BP and TGS on GOM lease sales andvelocity interpretation from 1988 to 1990. Since1990 he has been involved with velocity studies andseismic interpretation at WesternGeco (previouslySchlumberger Geco-Prakla). Recent seismic interpre-tation assignments include the eastern Gulf of Mexicoand deepwater Brazil. He is a member of the SEGand Houston’s geologic and geophysical societies.
