INTRODUCTION:

During the period July 26-29, 1977, a geological

survey was carried out across the Montcalm #2 property in

Montcalm Township. The writer was ably assisted during the

course of the survey, as well as during subsequent compilation

and interpretation by P. J. Bateman.

The Montcalm #2 property consists of fifteen, con

tiguous, unpatented mining claims in southwestern Montcalm

Township, approximately 65 kilometers (40 miles) west-northwest

of Timmins. The claims covered by the survey include:

P.492012-016 inclusive; P.492022-025 inclusive

and P.451078-083 inclusive.

The property is effectively only accessible by helicopter

- an area around the outcrop in the west-central part of the group

being the most suitable for landing. '

TOPOGRAPHY:

Characteristic to most areas north of Timmins, the

southeastern portion of the property is covered by spruce, alder-

spruce and alder swamps. The more western areas of the property, however, support thick growths of spruce, poplar, birch and alders

with tangles of cedar and alders adjacent to the creek margins.

The variance in relief across the property amounts to

some 20 metres, from the spruce-poplar ridges to the clay banks

of the creek bed.

PREVIOUS WORK:

Upon the discovery of a copper-nickel deposit by

Teck Corporation in September, 1976, a large area was staked,

covering parts of Montcalm, Strachan, Nova, Belford, Watson

and Poulett Townships. Most of the work initiated by that

staking, however, is still pending.

At any rate, a few companies have previously explored

the area, with the work of Area Mines Limited and C.C. Ruston

and Associates being most pertinent to the Hollinger group.

The earliest recorded assessment work was completed

by C.C. Ruston and Associates. In 1956, their property

encompassed 173 claims around the Montcalm-Strachan-Nova-Belford

Township corner. Based on geophysical results, four holes were drilled in Belford Township encountering a mixed sequence of

medium to coarse grained andesitic flows and metasediments

{arkose and greywacke members).

Circa 1964, Area Mines Limited held several claim groups

in Montcalm and Belford Townships. Subsequent to completing

magnetic and electromagnetic surveys, several holes were drilled.

North of the present Montcalm #2 property, one hole

was drilled into a quartz-chlorite schist in contact with

porphyritic to chloritized rhyolite. No expression of an electro^

magnetic anomaly was noted in the drill hole, although the depth

of overburden (205' vertical), suggests that any response was

probably not related to bedrock.West of Montcalm #2, in Belford Township, Area Mines

Limited drilled four holes into a zone of graphitic-rhyolitic

tuffs in contact with fine to medium grained andesitic flows

and pillow lavas. Traces of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite

and sphalerite were encountered across the rhyolitic-graphitic

zone - sulphides being more erratically distributed in the

andesitic volcanics.

Intruding the volcanic complex is an extensive zone

of mafic to ultramafic intrusives. The intrusive body forms

a rather crude ring shape, extending southwest from the Teck

deposit in Montcalm Township into Strachan and Nova Townships before swinging northwest in Belford Township (see plan following).

Data available suggest that the body ranges from diorite to serpentinite in composition.

The portion of this unit outcropping on Montcalm #2, is best described as a gabbro. Megascopically, the rock is composed of feldspar, hornblende and chlorite with minute grains of magnetite and the odd speck of biotite. The gabbro is dark grey green to dark green in colour, granular in texture, and locally carbonatized. Grain size varies from fine to coarse - the intrusive being crudely zoned into coarse, medium and fine grained sections. The coarser grained phases are generally more magnetic. Rare traces of pyrite and pyrrhotite were seen in surface exposures.

A second intrusive event, in this case felsic intrusives, is commonly recognized across the Montcalm-Belford area. Without

regard for the Kapuskasing sequence of granulite gneisses, exposures of felsic intrusives are presumed to be part of the Algoman Orogenic period.

The sequence includes rocks of granitic and monzonitic

composition with occasional pegmatitic, gneissic and migmatitic

phases.

All of the aforementioned units are cut by a series of

tension related(?) diabase dykes - the youngest intrusive event

noted. These intrusives are profuse throughout the Timmins area,

occurring in narrow, north to northwesterly trending dykes.

The diabase varies from fine to coarse grained andis typically ophitic textured. These dykes' characteristic strike

and high magnetic susceptibility allow fairly easy recognition in

most magnetic surveys.

STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY:

Since the geological history in the area is long and complex, it is difficult to sort out the sequence of structural events in more than a generalized sense. As an

aid, those structural features (basically faults), shown on the government publications for the area, have been adopted -

modified only by interpretations on the regional magnetics,

and projections of existing structures onto the property.

Using this method, three phases of faulting have been recognized:

an fi trending north to northwesterly

±2 trending northeasterly

and f3 trending east to east-southeasterly

In several instances, the f2 system traverses the

edge of the mafic intrusive while having little or no effect

on the Algoman granites. This roughly suggests a period in

which the f2 system takes place. Further, the f3 system

clearly offsets both gabbro and granite.

Without continuity of surface outcrop or diamond

drilling, conclusions regarding the mechanics of folding are

extremely tenuous. Thus, from the information at hand, the

structural-depositional history appears to proceed as:

ECONOMIC GEOLOGY:

The property was acquired to investigate the' Cu-Ni potential of the mafic to ultramafic intrusive, in view of the Teck Corporation discovery. Exploration by Teck, up to March 1977, led to the following preliminary working hypotheses:

" In the drilling to date, two different types of mafic rock have been recognized. One of these is a medium to coarse-grained, equigranular rock of dioritic composition containing about 75 per cent plagioclase, 25 per cent uralitized pyroxene and from O to 5 per cent free quartz. This rock does not contain more than traces of sulphides. The other group is a suite of medium to fine-grained, commonly porphyritic rocks of pyroxenitic to gabbroic composition. They contain all the known sulphide mineralization. Banding is pronounced, with individual bands between l and 10 m thick. Each band has a mafic, sulphide-rich base and grades upward to a more felsic rock with lesser amounts of sulphide. Up to 10 such bands have been identified in individual drill holes.

,,, ,, Principal sulphides in order of decreasing abundance, are pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalco pyrite. Small amounts of pyrite are present and trace amounts of violarite and valleriite have been identified in polished sections. Sulphides range in abundance from massive to disseminated. Primary

features such as brecciation and filling of skeletal plagioclase phenocrysts by sulphides have been observed. Chalcopyrite has in part been remobilized forming wisps and stringers that cross-cut earlier textures.

The sulphide body as outlined by drilling is about 325 m in length, extends to at least 300 m below surface, is open at depth and averages 25 m in thickness (both zones combined). The maximum true thickness intersected is 75 m. The sulphide body strikes N-S and dips from 80OE to 800W. A number of late, gouge filled faults have been observed in drill core, but no major offsets are indicated. '

The Montcalm #2 property lies on the same flank of the mafic intrusive as the Teck discovery, although ground magnetics suggest that the dyke may be fingering out here - a possible undesirable effect. At any rate, the similar geological environment suggests that follow up should proceed on most potential targets.

CONCLUSIONS:

Considering that the geophysical surveys have not, as yet, been completed, any attempt to summarize the potential of the property would be precipitous.

INTRODUCTION^

A ground electromagnetic survey was conducted over a small group of claims west of Timmins, Ontario.

Several conductive zones were mapped by the horizontal loop electromagnetic method but most of these appear to lie within a conductive overburden that appears to be present.

Three anomalous zones are selected for further geophysical investigations.

PROPERTY, LOCATION and ACCESS

The Montcalm No. 2 Group was ̂ staked by Hollinger Mines Limited during October 1977 and consisted of 15 claims numbered P-451078 to P-451083, P-492012 to P-492016 and P-492022 to P-492025, all inclusive. During August 1977, claims P-500644 to P-500646 inclusive were added to bring the total to 18 claims

The property lies between the Groundhog and Ivanhoe Rivers near the southwest corner of Montcalm Township, Porcupine Mining Division. Timmins is 42 miles to the east.

Access to the property was provided by helicopters from Timmins to widenings of the creek bed in the west part of the group.

On the more recently staked claims, near the south- east corner, there are old logging roads that lead to the Groundhog River near an old logging camp. From here along the poorly maintained Spruce Falls road it is 31 miles to Highway 101,

HISTORY and GEOLOGY

The only evidence of previous mineral exploration work on the property is the presence of older grid lines in the easterly and westerly claims.

A summary of previous work in the area of southwest Montcalm Township is contained in a separate report on the geology of the group recently submitted by Hollinger Mines Limited. This report is by D.R. Alexander and entitled "Geological Survey covering Montcalm 12 Group".

SURVEY METHODS

Linecutting:

i From a campsite along the creek, a line approximately

normal to the long axis of the creek was measured westerly for 175 feet. At a right angle a line was extended north for 1100 feet and to the south for 1200 feet. At this latter point, the 00 Base Line was turned off, again at a right angle, and extended westerly for 1600 feet to a point called 20W and easterly to 48E. The north tie line at 23N became sub-parallel but was extended easterly and westerly approximately the same distances.

Along the 00 B.L., lines 400 feet apart were extended grid north and south to cover all the claims. Stations were established at intervals of 100 feet.

H.E.M. Survey:

On the existing grid of lines, the H.E.M. survey was conducted using an EM-17 electromagnetic unit manufactured by

Geonics Limited of Toronto. Readings were taken at every 100 feet or less with the coi^.s in the horizontal co-planar mode and 400 feet apart.

RESULTS

The results of the survey are plotted and interpreted on the accompanying plan entitled H.E.M. Survey at a scale of l inch to 200 feet.

Although many conductive zones are interpreted, most of these display such poorly conductive characteristics or such low amplitudes that they cannot be reliably attributed to bedrock features.

Anomalies A, B, and C should be selected for further examination, especially anomaly C where it crosses line 4W. At this point, a higher conductivity is displayed that may suggest a bedrock source.

RECOMMENDATIONS and CONCLUSIONS

Anomalies A and B should be reviewed against future magnetic and vertical loop electromagnetic results.

A grid of lines 200 feet apart, oriented to thesouth east, should cover anomaly C prior to combined geophysical examinations consisting initially of vertical and horizontal loop electromagnetic and magnetic surveys.

The electromagnetic survey successfully detected a conductive zone in the northwest corner of the property that may be due to a concentration of economic sulphide mineralization. Further work is warranted.
