Why does it rain?

What happens when you put some water in a bowl and put it in a warm place?

After two or three days, all the water has disappeard.

Where does it go?

4Evaporation

It goes into the air.

This is called evaporation.

As the water evaporates,

it turns into water vapour.

5Evaporation

The same process happens when the sun

warms the sea - some of the sea water

evaporates and turns into water vapour.

6What happens next?

The water vapour goes up into the sky.

As it gets higher and higher, it gets cooler and cooler.

As it gets colder, the water vapour turns into droplets of water.

This is called condensation.

The water vapour condenses into water.

The water droplets form clouds.

The wind blows the clouds over the land.

The land is higher than the sea therefore the clouds are higher too.

As they go up into the sky, they get colder and colder.

The water droplets begin to join together.

As the water droplets join together,

they are too heavy to stay in the clouds.

They therefore start to fall to the ground

- this is known as rain / precipitation.

8Precipitation

The rain falls onto the ground and makes streams.

The streams flow down the hills and into rivers,

which eventually flows all the way back to the sea.

Can you think of any other forms of precipitation?

Then this starts all over again.

This is called The Water Cycle.

Can you remember all the steps in The Water Cycle?

Tell your partner, be prepared to share your ideas with the class.

10The Water Cycle

1. The sun warms the sea

2. The sea water evaporates and turns into water vapour

3. The water vapour rises into the air

4. It condenses into water droplets and forms clouds

5. The clouds rise and then the water falls as rain

6. The rain flows into streams

7. The streams flow into rivers and the rivers flow into the sea.

11Your Tasks

-Concept Cartoon

-Evaporation, Condensation or Precipitation?

Using the vocabulary labels, accurately label the water cycle process.

Complete the text by adding in the missing words in the correct places.

Design a leaflet which explains the process of the water cycle.

Don’t forget to include all of the steps and the correct vocabulary.
