FROM WHERE DO WE GET OUR DRINKING WATER?

SAN JUAN- CHAMA DRINKING WATER PROJECT

THE SAN JUAN-CHAMA DRINKING WATER PROJECT WAS

COMPLETED IN 2008, ENDING ALBUQUERQUE’S SOLE RELIANCE

ON AN OVERTAXED AQUIFER BY TAPPING INTO SURFACE WATER

TRANSPORTED FROM THE COLORADO RIVER BASIN.

“THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION (FDA) OVERSEES BOTTLED WATER, WHILE

THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY (EPA) REGULATES TAP WATER.

HOWEVER, THEY USE SIMILAR STANDARDS FOR ENSURING SAFETY.”

-KATHERINE ZERATSKY, R.D., L.D.

PUBLISHED BY THE MAYO CLINIC

“ABOUT 22 PERCENT OF THE BRANDS WE TESTED CONTAINED, IN AT LEAST ONE

SAMPLE, CHEMICAL CONTAMINANTS AT LEVELS ABOVE STRICT STATE HEALTH

LIMITS. IF CONSUMED OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, SOME OF THESE

CONTAMINANTS COULD CAUSE CANCER OR OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS.”

MORE FINDINGS FROM THE NATIONAL RESOURCE DEFENSE COUNCIL (NRDC)

• City tap water can not have confirmed E coli or fecal coliform bacteria (indicators of possible contamination by

fecal matter). A certain amount of any type of coliform bacteria is allowed in bottled water.

• Big-city tap water must be tested 100+ times/month. Bottled water plants test once a week.

• City tap water must meet standards for toxic or cancer causing chemicals such as phthalates (leaches from

plastics); FDA exempts bottled water from regulations regarding these chemicals.

• City tap water from surface water must be filtered and disinfected to adhere to numerical standards for pollutants

(and have well-defined protective measures such as controlling polluting activities). There are no disinfection

requirements for bottled water. Where they do exist, they are delegated to state (not federal) discretion.

• Cities must have their water tested by government certified labs— no requirement for bottlers

• Tap water test results and notices of violations must be reported to state or federal officials—no requirement for

bottled water

• City water systems must issue annual “right-to-know” reports telling consumers what’s in their water—no

requirement for bottled water10

$People spend from 240 to over 10,000

times more per gallon for bottled water

than they typically do for tap water. 17

ECONOMY_________________ ______

According to the Minnesota Department of

Health: “Some municipal water systems which

deliver water into people’s homes for under

1/100 of a cent per gallon are now bottling their

own water and selling it for more than a dollar

for a 20-ounce bottle — which comes out to

about $6 per gallon.”

ACCORDING TO COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY (CENTER FOR WATER) IS THAT A

TRADITIONALLY PUBLIC GOOD HAS BEEN PRIVATIZED. . . SOME EXPERTS CONTEND

THAT THE PROFITS FROM BOTTLED WATER COMPANIES COULD GO TOWARD

IMPROVING PUBLIC WATER SUPPLIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE—MAKING BETTER

WATER FOR EVERYONE.
