Then we’ll look at the southwest Asian nations

that speak other languages.

The hammada are rocky plains.

The Sahara desert is the largest in the

world after Antarctica. An oasis is a small source of water in the

desert. Knowing the location of oases is vital for crossing the desert alive.

The desert has several types of terrain.

The Nile Delta is the most fertile area in the

region. 95% of Egyptians live here.

Annual flooding brings new soil onto the land around the river.

The “Empty Quarter” is a desert of sand in the south. It contains some

of the deepest sand in the world, sometimes 600 feet deep.

However, not everyone that lives here is Jewish.

There is no oil or petroleum in Israel.

The people of Israel do not speak Arabic; they speak

Hebrew.

This is the Dome of the Rock. It is a mosque, a place of worship for Muslims.

It is in Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel.

It sits on the site of the temple of the Jews, which was destroyed long ago.

This makes some Jewish Israelis angry.

Many Muslims feel that this should be their part of the land.

They feel that the Jewish Israelis are moving in to take over.
