Geography IGCSE - Edexcel Syllabus

The Geography IGCSE Course is designed to give knowledge and understanding of geographical concepts and skills and covers the Exexcel IGCSE specifi cation. The course includes activities that give practice in a range of geographical skills that students will need to acquire for their examination.

The course is split into the following 6 units:

● Geographical Skills● River Environments● Coastal Environments● Economic Activity and Energy● Urban Environments● Fragile Environments

The Edexcel IGCSE in Geography enables students to:

1. Apply and build on the fundamental building blocks of geographical knowledge.2. Actively engage in the process of geographical enquiry to develop as eff ective and independent learners and as critical and refl ective thinkers with enquiring minds.3. Develop their knowledge and understanding of geographical concepts and appreciate the relevance of these concepts to our changing world.4. Develop a framework of spatial awareness in which to appreciate the importance of the location of places and environments from a local to global scale.5. Appreciate that people have diff erent views of, and attitudes to, the world, its environments and its issues.6. Develop and apply practical geographical enquiry skills.7. Undertake geographical investigations that include both primary and secondary data collection and presentation, analysis and drawing conclusions.8. Develop and apply their learning to the real world through fi eldwork.9. Develop their awareness of global issues and recognise the need for a sustainable future.

There are 10 tutor marked assignments including a mock exam assignment. Students should have internet access to carry out some of the research and lesson activities, some of which will be accessed by password.

The Syllabus:

The Geography IGCSE course is designed to prepare students for the Edexcel IGCSE in Geography (4GE1) for examinations in May/June 2019 or later years. Assessment is by two written papers.

Examinations:

● Exam Paper 1 - Physical Geography (1 Hour, 10 Minutes) is 40% of the total marks.● Exam Paper 2 - Human Geography (1 Hour 45 Minutes) is 60% of the total marks.

Geography IGCSE - Edexcel SyllabusPrerequisites:

There are no prerequisites for starting this course.

Please Note: We cannot accept students who are under 18 years old on this course. We do have an alternative course option for students who are under 18. Please email us if you require additional information about this alternative course.

Additional Reading:

The Geography IGCSE course has been designed as a stand alone course and does not require any additional reading. However, the introduction lists some additional reading for students if they would like to gain a wider understanding of a particular subject.

Student Support:

Every student receives a personal tutor with whom they should keep in regular contact. All tutors are fully qualifi ed experienced teachers holding either a Postgraduate Certifi cate in Education or a degree in education. Most work from home and are able to off er fl exible contact times. The tutor will contact students with an introductory letter and a telephone call to help decide on a study plan. They will also let the student know the best ways and times for contact.

There is no limit on how often you can contact your tutor. The advice and encouragement our tutors provide are an important part of your learning experience. You can contact your tutor by Phone, Post or Email. There are tutor-marked assignments (TMA’s) in every course. These help the student to consolidate their learning and prepare for examinations.

All tutors have a Freephone 0800 telephone number and most will have Skype capabilities. Whilst you are still actively submitting assignments, you should expect to be in contact with your tutor regularly. Remember, to get the most out of your tutor, you will need to tell them when you need assistance.

Examination Centres: Exams must be taken at a registered examination centre as a private candidate. We off er course materials and tutor support although we are not an examination centre. Student advisors can assist with fi nding centres and dealing with coursework forms but we do not book exams for students.

IGCSE Examination Fees:

Examination fees need to be paid direct to your chosen exam centre. Prices for exams will vary depending on the exam centre’s administration costs. You can fi nd out further information about the Private Candidate process and locate suitable exam centres from the Edexcel Private Candidate Page.
