What is Geofencing?

Geofencing is a technology to monitor moving objects like vehicles, people or containers with the help of GPS technology.

• Based on satellite positioning and telematics

• Makes use of radio frequency identification

• Enables remote monitoring of geographic areas surrounded by a virtual fence

Geofenced Areas

Allows monitoring of mobile objects within a geofenced area:

• Alarms are triggered when mobile objects enter or exit a geofenced area

• Area size can vary from a few meters to several kilometers

• Fencing area can be based on geometric figures like a square, rectangle, polygon, etc.

Proximity to a Point of Interest

Intended to detect the proximity of a vehicle to a point of interest:

• Point of interest (POI) is located in the center of a geofence, in the shape of a circle

• The length of the radius is the parameter for proximity

• Simplest method of geofencing, as it requires only 2 parameters: coordinates of center and value of radius

Route Adherence

• Raises alarm when a deviation occurs

• Gives precise alerts of the location to the control center

Monitoring the complete journey of a vehicle from its departure point to its destination point:

• Makes sure that a fleet or a vehicle does not deviate from its allocated route

Schedule Adherence

This technique is especially designed to enhance route monitoring and schedule adherence. For example, it is used when there is a preset route for a trip and it is divided into various stages or checkpoints which require stoppage time.

This type of geofencing ensures that the vehicle or the fleet is adhering to the prescribed timeslot for each stage.

Why is Geofencing Important for Fleet Management?

Geofencing helps in improving the efficiency of the fleet services by assisting in managing and tracking fleets with a large number of vehicles.

• It can specify whenever and wherever a driver leaves the prescribed route

• Allows fleet managers to set up a virtual perimeter based on a geographical area

• Helps in determining the amount of time any particular vehicle spends in any given location

Benefits of Geofencing in Fleet Management

When combined with other fleet management tools, geofencing can improve the safety and efficiency of the fleet.

• Helps in monitoring idle time by drivers; thereby increasing productivity

• Helps in improving safety by monitoring speed, turns, break and seat belt issues

• Helps fleet managers to inform the customer of the precise location of the fleet and the exact time of arrival
