Introduction

A soil sampling program commenced December 19, 2001 and was completed on January 16, 2002 over selected lines on the Havoc Lake property. Due to the mild fall into December the soil was not frozen which allowed easy collection. However due to severe wind storms a large number of trees had been up rooted or snapped off resulting in extensive "blow down" which covered the previous grid lines. A number of days were spent cutting out access along the lines to get to the sample sites, resulting in slow production.

Purpose

The purpose of the survey was to collect the "B" soil immediately below the humus layer which was often at less than 10 cm depth and analyse using MMI techniques and ICPMS at X RAL Labs in Don Mills, Ontario to test for the presence of Pd, Ni, Co in search for a Noril'sk type deposit. In addition a number of other elements were run to test for rare earths due to the proximity of alkali porphyry intrusions and pervasive hematite alteration suggesting the presence of an Olympic Dam setting.

Property Location and Access

The Havoc property is located near 500 N lat, 890 W long. The property is approximately 150 km north of Thunder Bay and 35 km south of Armstrong. Access is by gravel-sand lumber roads off of Hwy 527. Skidoo trails have been cut out along L400 W and 1600 N for access to 800 E. Several trails and old lumber road reach the south and east part of the property, (see Fig. 3)

Survey Method

Soil samples(up to 200 -300 grams) were taken along lines at 800 m spacing that traversed a large magnetic anomaly at 50 m intervals. "B" soils immediately below the humus layer were obtained by removing the humus with a spade and taking the very first brown-tan soil and placing up to 300 grams in plastic "zip lock" bags. In some cases the B soil was a tan coloured clay to silt and in some cases a reddish brown soil (slightly sandy). Some samples were taken of the upper humus layer where soil was more than 4 feet. In the bottom of valleys a black clay layer occurred beneath the humus up to 5 cm thick which may contain manganese. This clay was found to be conductive as well and was analysed in the case of 3 samples.

A total of 122 soil samples were taken On L16N, L8W, LO, L8E, L6N to cover the large east west trending mag high and a north south "tail" to this magnetic high (L6N).

A table of soil sample descriptions is presented here with locations

Previous Work

Geological traverses were carried out by the writer as early as August 1999 with D. Pyke and K. Gunnison. In July - August 2000 more mapping was done by the writer with visitations by Dr. Jim Franklin and prospecting was done by Dave Baker assisted by R. Tweedie. Remnant magnetism samples were taken by Baker and all of this work has been summarized by R. Middleton et al. Dec. ,2001.

Ground lines, magnetics and induced polarization - resistivity were contracted to D. Patrie (2000) and further IP magnetics was reported by D. Patrie (2001). Eight 400 m testlines of airborne magnetics - Megatem EM were flown by Fugro Airborne Surveys in August 2001 and merged with the previous data flown on 5 lines in February 2000, R. Caven (2001). The ground and airborne survey outlined a large magnetic feature that is "T" shaped with a north-south tail that appears to demark the Black Sturgeon Fault trace and a possible feeder dike.

The original magnetic anomaly was located by the GSC (1962) on map 2112G."Jack Innes Lake"

Geology

A large part of the property is covered by a Nipigon gabbro (diabase) sill up to 100 m thick however windows into Archean basement occur on the north west boundary of the property near the Kopka River and west of Cry Lake on the Roger King option where mafic volcanics and tuffs occur.

A north south trending valley corresponds to the magnetic high anomaly suggesting that the reversely polarized diabase sills have been removed in the valley exposing positive magnetic values related to other mafic intrusive or iron bearing rocks below. The valley is overburden covered there for future drill testing will be required.

Large boulders of red quartz-feldspar porphyry intrusive and fragmental rocks of the same composition have been found on the property that are interpreted to have originated from the English Bay alkali intrusive complex. Numerous boulders of diabase also occur. The glacial striations indicate that the last ice direction was 2450 which would explain the large preponderance of alkali porphyry boulders from English Bay. The full extent of this alkali intrusion is not known but dikes of porphyry cutting Sibley sediments were found on a new road south of Voogers Lake, as well as outcrops of a fragmental high level phase of the quartz eye- feldspar porphyry. Boulders of conglomerate were also observed containing jasper, iron formation, volcanic pebbles (possibly basal Sibley). The geology has been extensively described by Middleton etal 2001.

Interpretation

Anomalous zones are plotted on l :5,000 plans (Fig. 5) and a location map of the grid relative to claim and local topography is appended., Figure 3. (l :20000). The anomalous Ni values appear to plot on the margin of the magnetic anomaly where as the Co values are also on the eastern margin near a point where a significant north south magnetic trend intersects the main magnetic anomaly. Some zones of elevated barium occur possibly reflecting Sibley material in the soil. The MMI-D extraction give lower values than the MMI-B technique for Pd, Ni, Co and as a result it was decided to do a regular -80 mesh screen sample fraction assaying with ICPMS/80 pkg that also uses multi acid extraction. The anomalous areas from this method are also compiled on the l :5,000 Geochemistry Map (Fig. 5).

The ICPMS80 data that resulted from the analysis of the - 80 mesh soil fraction produced a number of Cu-Co anomalies that are associated with the magnetic high. Of particular note is LO/1650 N, L16N/550E, L16N/650E, L8E/16N - L8E/15N.

A Cu-Zn-Ag anomaly occurs at L16N/1250E that may reflect a different style of mineralization than the magnetic - mafic intrusion hosted Cu-NiJPGE style.

Glaciation and Soil Profile

The grid mainly covers a series of valleys between high hills of Nipigon diabase sills. The over burden is composed of a sandy till which has been exposed by the lumber road accessing the property. An upper Ao humus-moss layer often covers a fine silty tan coloured layer above a browner sandy till. In the lower part of the valley a deep 1.5 m layer of black humus-rotten trees occurs often above a black clay layer 0.2 - 0.3 m thick. This black clay may represent bog manganese + carbon and is conductive.

Reddish brown sandy soils were observed on line 16 N at higher elevations reflecting a significant increase in iron.

The glacial direction is 2450 and numerous boulders of red quartz eye porphyry from the English Bay intrusion (1539 my) are present.

It is possible that deep scouring of valleys has occurred, transporting the bedrock 2-3 miles down ice. This is supported by the fact that boulders of English Bay intrusive rock are also transported 2-3 miles from source.

Analytical Method

Each sample was subjected to a weak partial extraction, scheme method developed in Australia called Mobile Metal Ion or MMI-Method D for Pd, Ni, Co, Nb, Y, Ti, Rb, Mg, Cr, and an additional rare earth package has been appended. No sample preparation such as screening or drying was used. A 50 gram sample was treated with a multi-element extraction. These elements

Page 12: Geochemical Soil Sampling for - Ontario...Geological traverses were carried out by the writer as early as August 1999 with D. Pyke and K. Gunnison. In July - August 2000 more mapping

were extracted from the Mn coatings of the soil grains and from any moisture between soil

particles. Values are determined by ICP/MS in the ppb range.

A second part of the 200 gram sample was screened to -80 mesh and attacked with a multi acid

element extraction and analyzed with an ICP.MS.XRAL Method ICMS80 Multi acid ICP +

ICPMS. The elements analysed for are listed below with detection limits. This combination was

used to confirm MMI results and to test for Cu as well as U and Th in the event that an Olympic

Dam setting was present.

Recommendations

Additional soil sampling on L4E, GE (26N - 6N) should be done and additional lines (N-5) at

16E, 12E, and 24E from Vooges L. shore to 20N. An Au-Pt-Pd analysis should also be done on

all soils -80 mesh fraction. Other lines on the property to be sampled would include L4E, L6E

(angle grid) 1600E to 2000E.

Respectfully Submitted,

R. S. Middleton, P.Eng
