v Disaster Risk Management Law has be enacted on 31 July 2013

v Myanmar Action Plan on Disaster Risk Reduction(MAPDRR) has

already been launched.

v Disaster Management Curriculum has already been updated.

v Monitoring Room is being implemented.

v National Crisis Management Centre was launched at Nay Pyi

Taw on 12 June 2014 to help local authorities react more quickly

and effectively to emergencies. The Centre will be ready for

24/7 service and work together with the ASEAN Coordinating

Centre

Key challenges and difficulties in improving disaster risk preparedness and management

v Limitation on capacity building in Human Resources and also

Infrastructures

v Limitation on availability of High Resolution satellite images

v Lack of technologies in risk assessment based on RS and GIS

technologies

v Although government budget spend significant financial resources

on preparedness, mitigation and response at every year, we have

still the challenges in comprehensive disaster database.

v There is also lack of effective systems to monitor the disasters and

archive disaster related data, and the mechanism to engage

multiple stakeholders in information management processes.

v Lack on cooperation with national and regional agencies to

establish Geo-portal based on GIS technologies

Requirements and Expected from UNESCAPRequirements and Expected from UNESCAP

q Collaborate and cooperate with regional and international

organization in disasters preparedness and response activities such

as Flood, Storm and Earthquake

q Collaborate and cooperate with related Ministries/ Departments/

Organizations in order to get archive disaster related data

q Technical assistances for analyzing geospatial data in a

geographical information system in the form of satellite imagery

q Short/Long Term Training Courses in GIS & RS technologies and

risk assessment for effective disaster management plans

q Technical and financial support for developing the Geo-

portal/GeoDRM
