GAUGE: 22 sts and 28 rounds = 4 inches in st st in the round using 4mm needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Note: yarn is worked to a sl ightly tighter gauge than normal for a warmer hat.

    PATTERN NOTES:

Loop Stitch: Insert point of right hand needle into next st as if to knit; wrap yarn over the needle and your first two fingers, three times. Pull

these loops through the st, leaving the st on the left hand needle. Slip these sts to the left needle, and knit these sts together through the

back loop with the original st.

    Face:

    Using a circular needle and CC1, cast on 36 (41, 46) sts.

    Purl 1 row.

    Row 2 (RS): K35 (40, 45), wrap and turn.

    Row 3 (WS): P34 (39, 44), wrap and turn.

    Row 4: K33 (38, 43), wrap and turn.

    Row 5: P32 (37, 42), wrap and turn.

Continue, working 1 st fewer each row before the wrap until you have 7 (8, 9) wrapped sts each side, ending with a WS row.

Next row: K to end, working wrapped sts together with their wraps.

    Hat:

With appropriate MC, cast 44 (49, 54) sts onto the other circular needle.

Knit those sts, and then with RS facing, knit across sts of face from other circular needle. Place marker and join for working in the round,

    being careful not to twist.

P 1 round; knit 1 round. Repeat these two rounds once more, then purl 1 more round.

Next row (WS): K43 (48, 53), wrap and turn.

    Row 3 (RS): P42 (47, 52), wrap and turn.

    Row 4: K41 (46, 51), wrap and turn.Row 5: P40 (45, 50), wrap and turn.

Continue, working 1 st fewer each row before the wrap until you have 7 (8, 9) wrapped sts each side, ending with a WS row.

Next round: Knit, working wrapped sts together with their wraps.

Knit even in rounds until hat measures 5 (5.5, 6) inches from lower edge.

    Decrease for crown:

    Round 1: *K18 (16, 14), k2tog; rep from * to end of round. 95 (85, 75) sts.

    Round 2: Knit.

    Round 3: *K17 (15, 13), k2tog; rep from * to end of round. 90 (80, 70) sts.

    Round 4: Knit.

Continue in pattern as established, working 1 st fewer between decreases, until 10 sts rem. Change to dpns when circumference of hat is

too small to work comfortably on circular needle.

Final round: K2tog 5 times. 5 sts rem. Draw yarn through final sts and pull to close.

Finishing:For beard, with RS facing, using CC2 and circular needle, pick up and knit 36 (41, 46) sts in cast-on edge of face.

    WS is facing.

Row 1: K0 (1, 2), *loop st, k3; rep from * to end of row.

    Row 2: Purl

    Row 3: K0 (1, 2), *k2, loop st, k1; rep from * to end of row.

    Row 4: Purl
