The Black Keys are an American rock duo formed in Akron, Ohio, in 2001. The group consists of Dan Auerbach (guitar, vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums). Their music is mostly indie rock/blues rock. Their song, ‘Tighten Up’ is from their 6th studio album, ‘Brothers’ and was released in May 2010. The video for this song is very popular and has 49,317,276 views on YouTube, it was directed by Chris Marrs Piliero.Here is the music video:

LYRICS: The Black Keys – Tighten Up These first two lines sets the context of the song. The singer is suggesting that he is in love with a woman but it seems to be unrequited.

These lines are saying that even though the world and popular culture has told him that true love is dead, he can’t help but fall for this girl..

The singer is asking his romantic interest what he could do to get her to fall for him so that they could have the true love that he is searching for.

The narrator shows in this line that he has no self-respect. Although she treats him badly, tanking his respect (as a synonym for badge), his heart keeps on loving her.By telling her to “tighten up” her reins, he is asking her to slow down and to be 

with him. Also, this line hints that she is seeing other people and might be cheating on him, and also suggests that she can’t be tied down.

Due to her “running wild”, this may mean she had broken his heart so now he is love sick, and his heart is aching.

He needs some sort of relief, the pain in his heart must be overwhelming.

He is asking her what he can do to get her to love him back and be with him as he is so desperate.

This suggests that when he was young, he used to move from girl to girl very quickly and never really fell in love.

However, now he is in love and has found ‘the one’ and wants to settle down with her, so chasing girls isn’t for him anymore.

He is saying that he knows how he feels about the girl and doesn’t want to slow down or forget about her.

He is going crazy because he is so in love with her but he doesn’t know how she feels and he wishes he did.

This video is predominantly narrative based but also does have a performance aspect. The narrative focuses on a typical 2 boys like girl and fight for her storyline but it is different because the characters are actually kids and then the same thing happens with their parents later in the video. This creates an element of humour which the audience will find entertaining and will also recognise because many of this artists’ videos are comedic. The lyrics link to the visuals very well as the lyrics talk about a man falling in love with a girl who is wild and unfaithful and in this video the boy likes a girl but she is wild and doesn’t stay with him and goes with his friend.

Costume – Typically, the characters in indie music videos tend to wear very laid back, casual clothing which, tend to be of dark colours. For example, black skinny jeans, hats and maybe a leather jacket. This is true of the characters in this music video as the child is wearing jeans and a hoodie, his dad is wearing jeans and sunglasses and the other adult is wearing a leather jacket.

Props – many indie music videos show the instruments in the performance part of the video, and so at the end of this music video the two members of the band are playing the guitar and drums and singing, so this sticks to the conventions of a indie music video.

Attitude – in this video one of the boys stick up his middle finger but his dad doesn’t care or do anything about it and he also does this later in the video. Another character mouths a bad word and when the boys are fighting, the parents don’t step in until later. This is a bit rude and shocking but could also reflect the indie genre or the people who like the indie genre as they are quite laid back but a also a bit cheeky. Also, this adds to the humour element of the video as it is always funny to see children swear.
