Bullet For My Valentine

This band has become very well known over time within the rock genre. They started in 1998 as a cover band for Metallica and Nirvana but this didn’t work very well so they took a new direction by making their own music. They have become an extremely well know band from then and is mainly in the rock genre. They have shown strongly that their influences are Metallica and Iron Maiden. Both of these are also in the rock genre if not Metal. Their music is quite different from the band we are doing for our project but have similar conventions so will be useful for research.

This band seems to follow a style of having a story behind each of their videos. This gives the songs more meaning and makes the viewer pay more attention as they want to know what happens.

They use live performance in their videos to make the audience feel close to the band as they create a memory of what they look like and can see close features. It also adds to the feeling of them being manly as they aren’t wearing what is seen as normal clothes.

They use fear to create intrigue into the video and make the audience want to watch more. They also use it to make the music video seem more scary as it is very common within the genre itself.

Bring Me The Horizon

This band was formed in 2004 after several local bands failed they joined to become Bring Me The Horizon. They were scouted by a record company and then signed soon after. Since then they have released many albums and have been very successful. They have performed at many festivals and concerts and have gained a large fan base while doing so. At the beginning they said their influences were mainly deathcore bands such as Every Time I Die but more recently have mentioned music styles such as Pink Floyd and Dubstep. This shows the bands development over time into newer styles of music.

Live performance used by this band to create intimacy between the audience and the band. This is very similar to most other bands in this genre as it shows that they make their own music and don’t just sing to music they are given. It also allows them to advertise the band as it shows the members directly along with the music.

As shown in the image fear is used to add more to the video along with the music. They use fear as the genre is meant to be seen as scary to show they have power over others. This makes the band seem more manly and impressive. this will make the viewer want to watch more of their music videos to see them more.

The location of the video is set in an abandoned warehouse which is very dark and filled with lots of old machinery. this is a dangerous location which makes the band seem more dangerous as well. This can make them more interesting and make the viewer want to watch more of their videos.

Genre ResearchFrom what I’ve seen in the research of the genre, are certain conventions that are very common and stand out to make the videos more entertaining to the viewer. These conventions are important if we want to make a video that will entertain and fit inside the genre we are doing. These conventions are:• Live performance• Fear/scare factor• Desolate locations• Follow a storyEach of these are very common within this genre of music so we must use some if not all within our music video. Live performance is used to make it obvious that they play their own music and don’t just sing like in other genres. They use fear or scare factors to make the video stand out and remain in the audiences memory. This lets the band and video be remembered by the audience and influence them to watch more of their videos. The desolate locations make the band stand out as they are the only thing around and they don’t seem phased by the danger they could be in. this makes the viewer look up to the band and want to see more of them. The story in most of the videos seem to follow things about the bands life or the song itself. So most of the lyrics are involved in the story and make the video and song more memorable.
