SESAME STREETGENETICS ACTIVITY
Name ______________________
Partner’s Name ___________________________
Making the F1:
Step 1: Choose 2 sesame street characters from the next pages
to become your parent generation. Write their names on page 5 and assign an
XX to one and a XY to the other.
Step 2: Fill out a monster genetic profile for each of your parents (page 5)
using the Genetic key on page 4). If there are two genotype options for a
characteristic (e.g. five toes has FF and Ff) draw a number out of a hat (ie. 1 or
2) to determine what your monster’s genotype for that characteristic
Step 3: Use the parents’ genotypes and the Punnett squares on pages 5 & 6 to
determine possible monster baby genotypes.
Choosing your F1’s genotype: For each of your monster baby’s characteristics,
label the spaces in that Punnet square 1 through 4 and then randomly select
your monster baby’s genotype by drawing a number (1-4 from a hat). Record
this information in your monster baby profile on page 7.
Making the F2:
Step 4: Find another person with an opposite XX/XY F1 offspring
Step 5: Complete a monster profile of your F1 offspring’s spouse (page 7).
Step 6: Breed an F2 generation offspring and complete a monster baby profile
for your F2 generation (page 9) using the rules outlined in Step 3.
Step 7: Draw your F2 Offspring (page 10) and complete the follow-up
assignment (page 9).

Conclusion:
In 1 – 2 pages do an analysis of your results (explain why your F2 generation has the characteristics that it does). Make sure to answer the questions below within your analysis:
1. Define phenotype and genotype and give an example of each.
2. What is an allele? List the alleles the Sesame Street characters have for nose colour. Explain what kind of dominance these alleles display
3. In what circumstance will the phenotype match the genotype and when will it not match? (Use examples from the lab to help your answer). What is this type of inheritance called?
4. In this lab the body colour alleles showed a different phenotype pattern, what is this inheritance pattern called and explain how it works.
5. Is it more likely for a male or female offspring to be bald? What is this inheritance pattern called and explain how it works
