Annual Report 2006

Page 2: Genesis Foundation

Dear Friends of Genesis,

Close your eyes. Imagine for a moment that you are Héctor, a young child living in the low-income neighborhood of La Perseverancia in Bogotá, Colombia. Your home has a tin roof and a floor made only of dirt. You live with a constant chill and your family is unable to feed you enough. The only time you get a decent meal and have a solid roof over your head is while you are at school. Then imagine what it must be like to know that you are making a difference in Héctor’s life by providing him with that warm place to go every day where he can get a nutritious meal and the education he needs to develop into a well-rounded individual. That is the satisfaction we at the Genesis Foundation and our donors feel every day.

The Genesis Foundation was established in 2001 by Colombian and American entrepreneurs who share two common ideals. The first is a desire to “give back” to the communities that have helped them on their roads to success. The second is their collective belief that education is the basis for economic and social progress. Since inception, we have been following their vision of providing children with the quality education we believe leads to a successful future for them and their communities. In this period, we have donated more than $4.3 million to 74 organizations in Colombia and Latino communities in New York and Southern Florida that are committed to offering disadvantaged children a quality education.

Two-thousand six was an outstanding year for Genesis. Thanks to our generous supporters and our outreach efforts we were able to donate $1.8 million to 55 organizations throughout Colombia and Latino communities in the U.S. In total, we directly benefited 98,000 children—more than twice our initial goal. We touched the lives of over 89,000 children in 17 of Colombia’s 32 departments/states. In the U.S. we reached close to 9,000 children in Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, and Westchester.

Despite the strides that we have made, there is so much more to be done. Millions of children throughout Colombia and the U.S. still have countless educational needs that remain unmet. Think about it: on a normal day, you easily pass one hundred people on the street. In Colombia, half of them have not graduated from high school. Seven of the one hundred have no knowledge of how to read or write. A child you see roaming the streets during normal school hours is just one of the one million in the country who do not attend school of any kind, and possibly one of the twelve percent who are malnourished. In New York, 27 of the one hundred people you pass are likely to be Hispanic, and of the school age children you see, those who are Hispanic are twice as likely to drop out of school before their high school graduation. Many are struggling to learn English. Often, these children remain invisible to those who are able to help. Yet it does not have to be this way. Héctor was almost one of these children. But every day at the Genesis Foundation, we work to help ensure that Héctor, and others like him, do not become one of these statistics. And although we are proud of our contribution to reversing these problems, as long as there are Colombian and Latino children in the U.S. living without access to quality education, there is more to be done. We have therefore set ambitious goals for our organization for the next several years: By 2012, we want to reach 150,000 children every year and grant at least two million dollars per year to the institutions providing them with education and complementary services.

Think back to those 100 people you passed on the street today. What if each and every one of them knew how to read and write? What if they all had graduated from high school? What if there were no children roaming the streets because they were all eagerly learning in a classroom? It is possible. We hope you will join our efforts to give more children the chance for a bright future through access to quality education.

Best Regards,

Carolina Esquenazi President, Executive Director

Genesis’Mission Background

Genesis is a 501(c)(3) non-profit Private Foundation established in 2001 by a group of Colombian and American entrepreneurs, industrialists, and members of the New York hedge fund community who have a core desire to express their gratitude to the communities that allowed them to achieve success.

All of the Foundation’s administrative expenses are borne by the founders and sponsors. 100% of the donations we receive directly benefit the children. Donations are tax deductible in the United States.

At the Genesis Foundation we strive to give disadvantaged children the opportunity for a successful future through access to the quality education from which they are too often excluded.

By funding non-profit organizations that provide quality education and complementary health services to underserved children, Genesis seeks to give these youngsters the basic building blocks for their development.

Our mission has grown out of our desire to “give back” to Colombia and to Latino communities in the United States.

During 2006 we strengthened our evaluation metrics through investments in technology, people, and processes. The result is greater impact per grant.

Every organization requesting a grant must follow the following process:

1. Proposal Submission: Prospective grantees that meet the guidelines outlined on our website (www.genesis-foundation.org) submit a Grant Inquiry Form. Within a month, we inform applicants whether or not their request is aligned with our mission and if they should submit a formal proposal.

2. Pre-selection: Once proposals are submitted, our team reviews the application and performs site visits to determine the impact

How well will the project address the educational needs of our target population?

What is the expected impact of our philanthropic investment in this project?

Does the staff have appropriate skills and experience?

Is the organization well managed and financially stable?

What is the organization’s track record and success rate?

that a Genesis grant could have on our target population. Similarly, we evaluate the prospective grantee’s capacity to execute the project. Genesis staff rank the requests according to the criteria presented in the chart below.

3. Review and Approval: The applicants with the highest scores are presented to the Board of Directors twice a year for review and funding approval.

4. Monitoring and Evaluation: Once an organization reaches grantee status, we monitor our investment by establishing working groups, tracking progress and meeting with management.

In 2006, we implemented the first phase of a proprietary technology to efficiently help us review and pre-select prospective grantees and track those that we fund. The tool helps us determine the cost-benefit of our investments over a multi-year period.

The implementation of this tracking technology is a sign of Genesis’ commitment to ensuring that our donors obtain a high social return on their investment. Our grantees know that we will challenge them to achieve their potential, hold them accountable for their results, and demand a circle of competence.

Estructurar’s mission is to provide disadvantaged children with a comprehensive education. The organization offers full educational programs, from pre-school to secondary technical school, with an emphasis on design and graphic arts.

Estructurar was established in 1987 by the Rotary Club of Bucaramanga, COMAVSA, and the Chamber of Commerce. With an annual operating budget of US$130,000 the organization provides education to 440 children and young adults.

In the program, students are taught ethics and values and are given a basic knowledge of science and technology. Approximately 20 to 25 adolescents graduate every year, prepared to enter the work force as skilled employees.

Estructurar is recognized by the World Trade Organization (WTO) for its positive contributions to Latin America.

Needs AssessmentEstructurar has been a Genesis grantee since 2004. Estructurar found Genesis on the Internet and submitted an outstanding proposal in 2004 requesting support to help operate the school. Given their organizational capacity and the clear need for a preschool, Genesis made a second grant in 2005 to build and furnish the “Preescolar Genesis.” In 2006 Genesis provided funds to support the operations of the new preschool and the school.

Genesis’ grant is critical to sustainability of the high-quality preschool program.

Our grant is currently benefiting 62 preschoolers and 380 children enrolled in the school.

Every Person Influences Children (EPIC)’s mission is to provide effective programs and resources for parents, teachers and school administrators that help adults raise responsible and academically successful children. They offerworkshops for parents, teachers, and school leadership. Almost all of the programs are bilingual, offering materials in both English and Spanish.

EPIC was established in 1980. With an annual operating budget of $3 million, the organization serves 37,000 people each year through 50 distinct skill building workshops.

EPIC currently operates seven parent information resource centers in New York State. EPIC’s “Ready, Set, Read,” program is a bilingual literacy program focused on teaching parents how to better help their children learn to read and be academically successful.

Bogotá, Oct 4, 2006Mr. and Mrs. T,Respectfully, I would like to greet you. I hope you and your family are well. I am Julia Pérez, Diego’s mother. I want to thank God and you for helping Diego participate in the asthma program of the Fundación Cardio Infantil (Neumológica). My son has received treatment from the best specialists. Before Diego was admitted to this program, I suffered a lot because we had to run to the hospital at midnight and leave my other son Santiago alone at home. Ever since, I have taken Diego (to Asmaire) this has ended. I would also like to tell you that I used to be terrified of the inhaler, because people used to tell me that it would make him worse. I used to have to have him on medication all the time and hated to see him go through the (asthma) attacks. I couldn’t help him and used to cry a lot. Now my son is healthy. I want to once again thank you. Thanks to you my son and other children receive treatment. I hope God protects you in your journey.Sincerely,Julia Pérez*

Originally from El Carmen de Viboral, a small town outside of Medellín, Karol Alzate came to New York when she was seven years old. Unable to speak English, Karol began second-grade in a Queens public school without a single acquaintance. “I felt like an outcast my first semester,” she recalls. However, within in a few months Karol learned English and immediately began to shine academically.

A teacher recognized Karol’s gift and recommended that she apply to Prep for Prep, a highly competitive scholarship program providing talented students from communities that are traditionally under-represented in private schools, with academic training and a spot in a top private school. In fifth grade, Karol was selected as one of the 215 students chosen from the pool of over 4,000 to be a Prep for Prep Scholar. Karol is currently a seventh-grader at Saint Ann’s, one of the finest private schools in the country. Her two strongest subjects are English and writing. She is also studying French and Chinese. Aside from her academic work, Karol is a fan of music of all kinds and is learning to play the guitar.

Karol admits that none of her success would be possible without the constant support she receives from her family. Although language barriers prevent her parents from helping her with her school work, the two are always at her side, ready and willing to offer any support they can.

Despite her physical distance from her native Colombia, Karol keeps the land close to her heart. “I love Colombia. Colombia is where I began. That’s me. I don’t want to lose my roots.” Karol maintains her Spanish and anxiously awaits her yearly return home.

Unsure of the exact career path she ultimately wants to pursue, Karol knows that she wants to use her skills to help people and make the world a more just place.

The Genesis Foundation will provide Karol with a scholarship to attend Saint Ann’s through the ninth grade. We are proud to support such a remarkable young woman and have no doubt that Karol will continue to be a tremendous success.

The standardized tests in place, such as ICFES or Saber, have proven to be effective in measuring quality of education. However, they do not report on the quality of the educational processes—a key element to truly learn from successes and failures. The program has been promoted by UNICEF and has been successfully executed in other cities in Colombia including Armenia, Yumbo, and Medellín. Then the children are then given intensive tutoring to help them make up what they have missed in school and return to the grade appropriate for their age. Frequently Asked Questions

Page 72: Genesis Foundation

Non-profits that meet the preliminary criteria and would like to be considered for funding should complete and submit the Grant Inquiry Form that can be downloaded from www.genesis-foundation.org. Within a month, we will inform applicants whether their request for funding is aligned with our mission and is eligible for consideration. Eligible organi zations are then asked to fill out the Grant Proposal Form. Grant proposals are evaluated by the staff and Board of Directors twice per year, in May and November. Grant proposals and all supporting documentation must be received by March 15th or September 15th to be considered during the following review period.

We support initiatives operated by non-profit organizations working in the areas of formal education benefiting children 0 to 18 years old. While we give operating, capital, and capacity-building grants, we do not fund individuals, nor political or religious causes. Approximately 80 percent of our grant-making is devoted to Colombian entities, with the remainder allocated to projects benefiting Latinos in the United States, specifically in the New York Metropolitan Area, Washington, DC, and Southern Florida. We offer multi-year grants that typically range from $10,000 to $100,000, although at times we may consider larger grants. Go to www.genesis-foundation.org for further details.

Genesis was established in 2001 by a group of people committed to “giving back” to the communities that help them be successful. Since then, Genesis has invested in organizations that address the educational needs of disadvantaged children in Colombia and in Latino communities in the US. Colombia is Latin America’s oldest democracy, and had one of the areas most stable economies during the 20th century. With the exception of the year 1999, since 1930 it has experienced positive growth and has never defaulted on its international debts and obligations. In addition to the country’s economic stability, the Colombian government has a clear mandate to improve education. Likewise there are a wealth of well-run non-profit organizations that are effectively addressing the educational needs of the children. Given the country’s poverty, the educational needs are enormous. A dollar goes a long way to educate a child in Colombia.

Most foundations in the United States will not provide funds to organizations for more than two or three consecutive years. In addition, close to 50% of grants are directed to program innovation and may not be used for funding teacher salaries, paying electric bills, or any other administrative expense. Less than 20% of foundation grants may be used for capital improvements. Genesis has a different approach that better responds to the needs of non-profit organizations we work with. Non-profits in Colombia and in Latino communities in the U.S. operate with scarce funds from limited sources of funding. Their main need may be resources to continue to provide services, as well as build and expand their programs.

How is the Genesis Foundation different from other foundations?

Why Colombia?

73

Page 75: Genesis Foundation

Therefore, our model is based on strengthening the organizations that we fund and helping them become sustainable over time. We achieve this goal by:

--Basing our funding decisions on how effectively an organization addresses the educational needs of the children and not by how long they have been a Genesis grantee. We do not limit the number of years we will fund an organization. --Providing grants for day-to-day operations, for construction, for teacher training, and for implementing capacity-building initiatives, in addition to grants for program innovation. --Help our grantees pursue new sources of funding by leveraging our resources--Creating a network among our grantees, so that grantees can more readily collaborate and build on one another’s experiences.--Having two full-time staff members in Colombia, and one in the U.S., that not only help select grantees and monitor our investments, but also serve as a resource to them.

You may help by:--Making a donation--Volunteering for events, fundraising or special projects--Introducing us to grantees, or prospective partners and donors--Spreading the word about our work--Raising awareness of the educational challenges of children in Colombia and in Latino communities in the US For more information call 212-763-3703 or email [email protected]
