The FallGenesis 3

Has Anyone Explored?

• Search for ...– “Privileged Planet”

Last Week

• Finished Day 6– God created man in

His Own Image• Not from apes!• Adam = Representative

– Dominion Mandate• Not License to Abuse• Stewardship

– Multiply & Fill The Earth

• Day 7– Rest (For Our Benefit)

• Finished Creating• Perfectly Complete

• 1st Toledot (of 11)– What Follows From ...– Description of Earth– Formed not Spoken

• Lowliness + Dignity– Jobs: Caretaker

• Garden & Animals• Naming Animals

– A Partner Fit ForAdam

Day 6: Representative = Oh, it's AdamDay 7: He Stopped Creating and Now SustainsCpt 3: Formed (Let us make) Not Spoken into Existence

From Dirt & God Breathed; Spirit of God AddedWoman: Rib , not head or foot

Neanderthals

• Evolutionary Leftover Problems– 2nd week of February (study published in the

journal Science)– One bit of Neanderthal DNA can boost the

risk of tobacco addiction– Others can slightly raise or lower the risk of

being diagnosed with depression.– Past studies have suggested Neanderthal

DNA raises the risk of allergies

Admit N in H; Not separate speciesN > Boost Tobacco useraise OR lower? depressionsuggests increase allergies

Neanderthals

• This week in the journal Nature– Analysis of the remains of a Neanderthal

woman detected residual DNA from Homo sapiens, a sign of inter-species mating.

– The discovery by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology forces scientists to reassess the accepted time line of when humans migrated out of Africa to other parts of the world.

Inter-species mating!?Must reassess ... = always changingRead critically - Teach others to do so too

Last Week

• Marriage is Divinely Established– woman = 'ishshah; man = 'ish

• There was perfect harmony– between the man and the woman– between them and their Creator– between them and the rest of creation

• Now it gets ruined!

Word structure same in Hebrew & English

The Serpent?

• Genesis 3:1a (NIV)Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made.

Does this look right?

The Serpent?

• Genesis 3:1a (NIV)Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made.

• Genesis 3:14b (NIV)You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

Didn't snakes already crawl on their belly and eat dust?

The Serpent?

• Revelation 12:9 (NIV)The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

We really don't know.Be careful to stick with what is sure - there is more than enough.More later ...

Where Did Evil Come From?

• Not here on Day 6– Genesis 1:31a (NIV)

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

• Humans– Divine and Dirt– Free to Chose; Obey or Not = A good Thing

• No Freedom to Disobey = No Freedom to Obey

God gave His Creatures the ability to Love Him FreelyThat's the difference between Eden & New Heaven and Earth

Should God Eliminate It?

• Habakkuk 1:13 (NIV)Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong. Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?

• Habakkuk 2:14 (NIV)For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

Habakkuk asked this same question; and God Answered

He Will, In His Timing

• 2nd Peter 3:9 (NIV)The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

• Now? How Much?– Murders? But not disrespecting parents?– Read Romans 1-29-31

Romans 1:29-31 (NIV)[29] They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, [30] slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; [31] they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

Why Let Satan Live?

• Let's look at what Daniel Defoe say in his classic Robinson Crusoe (1719)

• The Fall of Satan– When?

• Had to be After Day 6: All was very good!• Genesis 3:8 (NIV) Tells us of a daily practice ...

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

It isn't that Satan will ever repent, but that if God were to immediately destroy evil, He would destroy all of us as well, and with perfect justice. But since He does not destroy us immediately, we should presume that He also has a good reason not to destroy Satan.

3:8 Had to be at least several days to establish a familiar pattern.Since A&E would have been obedient before the Fall & had no child yet ... Cain = 1st

Could not have been long

A Talking Serpent?

• Many people laugh at this, but ...

• Jesus says in John 8:44 (NIV)You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

• 2nd Corinthians 11:3 (NIV)But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ

• 1st Timothy 2:14 (NIV)And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

Again, it's history or the rest falls apart.

The Temptation

• Genesis 3:1-5 (NIV)[1] ... the serpent ... said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?”[2] The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, [3] but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'”[4] “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. [5] “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

The Temptation

• Genesis 3:1 (NIV)[1] ... the serpent ... said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?”

• Casting Doubt on God's Word

• Making it tougher than it really was

First 2 tactics

The Temptation

• Genesis 3:2-3 (NIV)[2] The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, [3] but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'”

• Eve answered correctly– Affirming God's Generosity

• Did she add to God's Word?– When did God tell Adam 'the rules'?– Who told Eve?

God told Adam (2:16-17) Before Eve was created.Did Adam elaborate? Tell kids don't touch flowers = don't pick them?

The Temptation

• Genesis 3:4-5 (NIV)[4] “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. [5] “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

• Escalation– Lies!

• Notice 'surely die', Satan knows the Word!– Attacked God's Goodness

• Disobedience will lead to a greater good

Genesis 2:17 (NIV) but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”Eve said (3:3) ... and you must not touch it, or you will die.

The Fall

• The most tragic verse in Scripture

• Genesis 3:6 (NIV)When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

The Fall

• 1st John 2:16 (NIV)For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.

• Three 'traps'– "Desires of the flesh"—"tree was good for food."– "Desires of the eyes"—"a delight to the eyes."– "Pride of life"—"desired to make one wise."

(Same kind of Temptations as Jesus)

• Eve was the first to make her analysis of data authoritative over God's Word

The Fall

• Adam 'dove right in'– He knew, and ate without an objection

• Some say Adam joined Eve because of his great love for her– That would mean he placed Eve above God

• He sinned before he Fell (ate = disobeyed)?• Different Sins, Same Results

– Hosea 6:7, 2nd Corinthians 11:3, 1st Timothy 2:14, Romans 5:12-21

– Eve was deceived– Adam openly rebelled

It didn't take Adam long to turn on her.Hosea 6:7 (NIV) Like Adam, they have broken the covenant—they were unfaithful to me there. Also, Adam was the responsible head

Consequences

• Genesis 3:7-8 (NIV)[7] Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.[8] Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

• Shame gives some hope of repentance

You will surely die: Death = separation1st Death: Death of contentment with themselves - shame

They wanted separation between themselves and everything elseNotice 8: We saw this earlier in regard to when Satan Fell.2nd Death: Separation between them and God

Consequences

• Our Sin Nature– We no longer can not sin– Romans 7:14-15 (NIV)

[14] We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. [15] I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

• Our Salvation– We are no longer slaves to sin– Romans 6:6 (NIV)

For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—

Consequences

• Adam and Eve were created with the ability not to sin.

• After the Fall, humans had no ability to completely avoid sin.

• In the Eternal State, redeemed humans will have no ability to sin.

Court is In Session

• Genesis 3:9-11 (NIV)[9] But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?”[10] He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”[11] And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

• God asks 'Where' Adam answers 'Why'– But is nakedness the real problem?– He is afraid - that is true– Of What?

They were naked with God before. They had covered themselves.

• His guilt is exposed!

Blame!

• Genesis 3:12 (NIV)The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

• It's Who's Fault?– First it's _____– Then it's _____

Who's fault really? Adam; we will get thereDo we ever do that? Guess we are just like A&E.

Blame!

• Genesis 3:12 (NIV)The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

• It's Who's Fault?– First it's God's– Then it's Eve's

Notice that he does confess to what he did.But kind of just tacks it on at the end. Did he mumble it under his breath?

Blame!

• Genesis 3:13 (NIV)Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

• It's Who's Fault?– The ______ made me do it!

But God chooses to follow the testimony trailAgain, blame another.

At least there is no blame on God or Adam. But there is the token confession at the end.

Blame!

• Genesis 3:13 (NIV)Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

• It's Who's Fault?– The serpent made me do it!

Anyone remember Flip Wilson?“The devil made me do it!”

Out of Order!

• Downfall– Serpent Influenced Eve– Eve Influenced Adam

• Responsibility– Animals were to be ruled by Mankind– Eve was to be cared for by Adam

• What order does God follow in Judgment?

God follows Downfall orderSource to End

Judgment!

• Genesis 3:14 (NIV)So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

• As mentioned earlier, the serpent had to be changed somehow

... crawl on your belly and you will eat dust ...

Eat Dust?

• The Bible is accurate in minute detail.– Snakes do deliberately and purposely eat dust.

• There is an organ in the roof of a snake’s mouth called the ‘Jacobson’s organ’.

• This helps the snake to smell in addition to its nose.• Its forked tongue samples bits of dust by picking them up on

the points of the fork• Then presents it to its matching pair of sensory organs• Once it has ‘smelt’ them in this way, the tongue must be

cleaned so the process can be repeated immediately.

• Therefore serpents really do lick dust and eat it.

Judgment!

• Genesis 3:14 (NIV)So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

• With the serpent, God went straight to judgment, no questions.

[12] After Adam ... God questioned Eve.[13] The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”[14] So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, ...No questions from God? Why?

Judgment!

• Hebrews 2:16-17 (NIV)[16] For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham's descendants. [17] For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.

• But the serpent was possessed by satan

There is no salvation for angelic rebels, only humans

Cursing the serpent = not fair?

Judgment!

• Remember 3:1?the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals

• Crafty– clever, subtle, shrewd, cunning, prudent– Not necessarily bad

• I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. (Matthew 10:16 NIV)

The serpent had characteristics that could be used for good or evil. Here they were used for evil and God must judge evilRemember, animals are not moral beings but they are held accountable for evil

Judgment!

• Genesis 9:5 (NIV)And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man.

• Killing a human is a capital offense - even for animals

And so, the evil of the serpent is judgedBut God has not forgotten about satan ...

Judgment!

• Who is the cause of death?– John 8:44 (NIV)

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

The devil is a murderer from the beginning ...He holds satan responsible for the death of every human! So ...

Judgment!

• Now God Judges Satan

• If verse 3:6 is the most tragic, 3:15 is the most hopeful

• Genesis 3:15 (NIV)And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

Judgment continues: Hope in the midst of rebellion and tragedyNote: Enmity not just between (some) women and snakes

but between a particular child of woman and satanWoman's seed requires no human father > Divine Father

Judgment!

• Note that we have– The beginning of sin– The beginning of death– The Promise of Life

• Genesis is indispensable!• Note the Fulfullments

– Partial: Cross and Resurrection• Christ's heel bruised' and not killed

– Final: Revelation 20:10

Revelation 20:10 (NIV)And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Judgment!

• Genesis 3:16 (NIV)To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

• Childbirth is painful– worse than having a finger amputated without

anesthetic

Dr Ronald Melzack, a leading expert in the field of pain and also says itmay be exceeded only by the suffering of some terminal cancer patients

Judgment!

• Your desire will be for your husband,– Same words as to Cain in Genesis 4:7 (NIV)

if you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.”

– A Drive To Control

• and he will rule over you.”– A Tendency for Despotic Domination

Judgment!

• Genesis 3:17-19 (NIV)[17] To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,' “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. [18] It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. [19] By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Now for Adam ...

Judgment!

• Ground, not Adam, is cursed!“Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. [18] It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.

• Adam was given dominion over the earth– Romans 8:22 (NIV)

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

Now for Adam ... Ground because ...3rd Death: Separation between mankind and the earth - his domainRemember there is hope in childbirth

Long-Agers In Trouble Again

• Thorns are in lower layers than dinosaurs– But evolutionists say

thorns developed as defense against herbivores

– We also have death before sin

• But per God's Word neither come until after Adam's sin.

Amazing Facts

• Leaves are Flat– Flatness is difficult (perfected)

• Internal and external growth must be coordinated

• Thorns are degenerative ...– mutant leaves or parts of leaves that didn’t

unfold properly– leaf bases that have failed to grow into leaves– left over when leaves fall off – failed branch development

Flat for best solar exposureThere are an infinite ways to make UNflat, but only 1 to make flat.

Amazing Facts

• Flat and Malformed

Examples of Flatness & notEven for spiny leaves, they are flat

Amazing Facts

Prickles: Like Hairs;

Spines: Modified Leaves or Leaf Parts

Thorns: Modified Branches or Stems

3 kinds of stickery things

Judgment!

• Ground Gives Adam Trouble[19] By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food ...

• The Earth Will Resist You– Weeds– Scratchy things– Hard Ground– Did Nutritional Value of Plants Decrease?

• Requiring more work to live

Now work is hard.

Judgment!

• ... until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”– Now we see Physical Death Established

• Separation Between Body and Spirit• It Begins Immediately But• Takes Time to Happen

• What is the Point of The Consequence if Death was Already Part of The Natural System?

First Human Physical Death?AbleAgainst Long-Agers again!

Moving On ...

• Genesis 3:20 (NIV)Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.

• Adam Give A Proper Name To ...– Previously Only Kind: Woman– Now Prophetic: Eve

• mother of all the living– Shows Adam's Authority Over Eve

Word Plays

• Evidence of– Single Writer– Hebrew or Similar Language of Original

• Examples:– chawwäh / chäy = Eve / Mother of Living– Adam / adamah = Adam / ground– arum / arumim = crafty / naked – More to come ...

arumim is also the plural form of the description of satan

More Amazing Facts

• Mitochondrial Eve

• 1980: Geneticists Analyzed mDNA Globally– Conclusion: All Descended From One Woman– Originally Concluded 200,000 Years Ago– Now saying 6000 to 6500 Years Ago

• Trends in Ecology and Evolution - 1997• Science - 1998

1 woman = Startling to evolutionists

More Amazing Facts

• Life is inherited only via whole functional cells– Mother’s functional body plan– Any mutation at this stage, the embryo dies– Each living Kind has its own unchanging

functional body plan (No Evolution Permitted)– Today’s species are built to the functional

body plan. They only diversify after the functional body plan has been established by the mother’s egg cell

Body plan = Front back, left, rightThis comes from mDNA from mothers cell, Not fathers DNA

More Amazing Facts

• Species Variations– Are Not New Information– Are Due To Damaged

'Switches'

• New Scientist article (2007) cautioned its readers: “If you want to know how all living things are related, don’t bother looking in any textbook that’s more than a few years old. Chances are that the tree of life you find there will be wrong”

* Stickleback fish normally have long spines projecting from their body. On the lake bottom, these are a disadvantage because dragonfly larvae latch onto them. However, some varieties have adapted to their environment. Due to a mutated genetic switch, they don’t develop pelvic spines, so they are much better at evading the grasp of predators

The Cover-Up

• Genesis 3:21 (NIV)The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

• Physically, He clothed their nakedness• Spiritually, He covered their sin by making their first

atonement• Lessons:

– To approach God, one must have a proper covering– Man-made covering was not acceptable– God Himself must provide the covering– The proper covering required the shedding of blood– God's grace provided for them

More Doctrine and Theology from Genesis!

The Merciful Expulsion

• Genesis 3:22-23 (NIV)[22] And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” [23] So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

• God did not allow us to live in sinfulness forever

The Merciful Expulsion

• Another Word Play– "reach out" & banished or "sent him"

• Both are forms of the Hebrew verb shalach– "take" from the Tree of Life / he was "taken"

• Both are forms of laqach

• Genesis 3:24 (NIV)After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

The Hebrew words sound similar

The Merciful Expulsion

• Who is On Watch?– Two Cherubim– And?

• Hint:• Exodus 25:22 (NIV)

• Luke 15:18, 20 (NIV)

The Merciful Expulsion

• Who is On Watch?– Two Cherubim– And?

• Hint:• Exodus 25:22 (NIV)

There, above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the Testimony, I will meet with you ...

• Luke 15:18, 20 (NIV)[18] I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. ... [20] So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
