Carbon Monoxide Hazards

Operator Responsibility

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Be sure that anyone who operates the generator receives properinstruction. Do not let children operate the generator withoutparental supervision.

Honda generators are designed to give safe and dependable service ifoperated according to instructions. Read and understand this owner’smanual before operating your generator. You can help preventaccidents by being familiar with your generator’s controls and byobserving safe operating procedures.

Know how to stop the generator quickly in case of emergency.

Understand the use of all generator controls, output receptacles, and connections.

Exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide, a colorless andodorless gas. Breathing carbon monoxide can cause loss ofconsciousness and may lead to death.

If you run the generator in a confined or even partly enclosed area, the air you breathe could contain dangerous amount of exhaust gas.

Never run your generator inside a garage, house, or near openwindows or doors.

Electric Shock Hazards

Fire and Burn Hazards

The generator produces enough electric power to cause a seriousshock or electrocution if misused.

Using a generator or electrical appliance in wet conditions, such asrain or snow, or near a pool or sprinkler system, or when your handsare wet, could result in electrocution. Keep the generator dry.

Do not connect to a building’s electrical system unless an isolationswitch has been installed by a qualified electrician.

If the generator is stored outdoors, unprotected from the weather, check the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) receptacle, and allother electrical components on the control panel before each use.Moisture or ice can cause a malfunction or short circuit in electricalcomponents that could result in electrocution.

The exhaust system gets hot enough to ignite some materials.Keep the generator at least 3 feet (1 meter) away from buildingsand other equipment during operation.Do not enclose the generator in any structure.Keep flammable materials away from the generator.

The muffler becomes very hot during operation and remains hot fora while after stopping the engine. Be careful not to touch the mufflerwhile it is hot. Let the engine cool before storing the generatorindoors.

Gasoline is extremely flammable and is explosive under certainconditions. Do not smoke or allow flames or sparks where thegenerator is refueled or where gasoline is stored. Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine stopped.

Fuel vapors are extremely flammable and may ignite after theengine has started. Make sure that any spilled fuel has been wipedup before starting the generator.

GROUND FAULT CIRCUIT INTERRUPTER (GFCI) RECEPTACLE

The ground-fault circuit interrupter will not protect against shortcircuits or overloads. The circuit breaker in the control panel thatsupplies power to the circuit provides that protection (refer to circuitbreaker on page ).

The ground fault circuit interrupter can be identified by the TEST andRESET buttons. The duplex receptacle on the GFCI can be tested withthe TEST and RESET buttons.

The 20-ampere, 120-volt duplex receptacle that has TEST and RESETbuttons is protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI)against the hazards of ground fault currents. An example of groundfault current is the current which would flow through a person who isusing an appliance with faulty insulation and, at the same time, is incontact with an electrical ground such as a plumbing fixture, wet floor,or earth.

GENERATOR USE

GROUND SYSTEM

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

CONNECTIONS TO A BUILDING’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Improper connections to a building’s electrical system can allowelectrical current from the generator to backfeed into the utility lines.Such backfeed may electrocute utility company workers or otherswho contact the lines during a power outage, and the generator mayexplode, burn, or cause fires when utility power is restored. Consultthe utility company or a qualified electrician.

There may be Federal or State Occupational Safety and HealthAdministration (OSHA) regulations, local codes, or ordinances thatapply to the intended use of the generator. Please consult a qualifiedelectrician, electrical inspector, or the local agency having jurisdiction.

Honda portable generators have a system ground that connectsgenerator frame components to the ground terminals in the AC outputreceptacles. The system ground is not connected to the AC neutralwire. If the generator is tested by a receptacle tester, it will not showthe same ground circuit condition as for a home receptacle.

If the generator is used at a construction site, there may beadditional regulations that must be observed.

In some areas, generators are required to be registered with localutility companies.

Connections for standby power to a building’s electrical system mustbe made by a qualified electrician. The connection must isolate thegenerator power from utility power, and must comply with allapplicable laws and electrical codes. A transfer switch, which isolatesgenerator power from utility power, is available through authorizedHonda generator dealers.

AC APPLICATIONS

Make sure that the electrical rating of the tool or appliance does notexceed that of the generator. Never exceed the maximum powerrating of the generator. Power levels between rated and maximummay be used for no more than 30 minutes.

If an appliance begins to operate abnormally, becomes sluggish, orstops suddenly, turn it off immediately. Disconnect the appliance, and determine whether the problem is the appliance or the ratedload capacity of the generator has been exceeded.

Make sure that it is in good working order. Faulty appliances orpower cords can create a potential for electrical shock.

Before connecting an appliance or power cord to the generator:

Limit operation requiring maximum power to 30 minutes.Maximum power is:

Substantial overloading will switch off the AC circuit breaker.Exceeding the time limit for maximum power operation or slightlyoverloading the generator may not switch the AC circuit breaker OFF,but will shorten the service life of the generator.

For continuous operation, do not exceed the rated power.Rated power is:

The total power requirements (VA) of all appliances connected mustbe considered. Appliance and power tool manufacturers usually listrating information near the model number or serial number.

HIGH ALTITUDE OPERATION

At high altitude, the standard carburetor air/fuel mixture will be toorich. Performance will decrease, and fuel consumption will increase. Avery rich mixture will also foul the spark plug and cause hard starting.Operation at an altitude that differs from that at which this engine wascertified, for extended periods of time, may increase emissions.

High altitude performance can be improved by specific modificationsto the carburetor. If you always operate your generator at altitudesabove 5,000 feet (1,500 meters), have your servicing dealer performthis carburetor modification. This engine, when operated at highaltitude with the carburetor modifications for high altitude use, willmeet each emission standard throughout its useful life.

Even with carburetor modification, engine horsepower will decreaseabout 3.5% for each 1,000-foot (300-meter) increase in altitude. The ef-fect of altitude on horsepower will be greater than this if no carburetormodification is made.

When the carburetor has been modified for high altitude operation, the air/fuel mixture will be too lean for low altitude use. Operation ataltitudes below 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) with a modified carburetormay cause the engine to overheat and result in serious engine damage. For use at low altitudes, have your servicing dealer return thecarburetor to original factory specifications.

EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM INFORMATION

Source of Emissions

Tampering and Altering

The U.S. and California Clean Air Acts

The combustion process produces carbon monoxide, oxides ofnitrogen, and hydrocarbons. Control of hydrocarbons and oxides ofnitrogen are very important because, under certain conditions, theyreact to form photochemical smog when subjected to sunlight. Carbonmonoxide does not react in the same way, but it is toxic.

Honda utilizes appropriate air/fuel ratios and other emissions controlsystems to reduce the emissions of carbon monoxide, oxides ofnitrogen, and hydrocarbons.

Removal or alteration of any part of the intake, fuel, or exhaustsystems.

Altering or defeating the governor linkage or speed-adjustingmechanism to cause the engine to operate outside its designparameters.

Tampering with or altering the emission control system may increaseemissions beyond the legal limit. Among those acts that constitutetampering are:

EPA and California regulations require all manufacturers to furnishwritten instructions describing the operation and maintenance ofemission control systems.

The following instructions and procedures must be followed in orderto keep the emissions from your Honda engine within the emissionstandards.

Additionally, Honda fuel systems utilize components and controltechnologies to reduce evaporative emissions.

Problems That May Affect Emissions

Replacement Parts

Maintenance

If you are aware of any of the following symptoms, have your engineinspected and repaired by your servicing dealer.

Hard starting or stalling after starting.

Rough idle.

Misfiring or backfiring under load.

Afterburning (backfiring).

Black exhaust smoke or high fuel consumption.

Follow the maintenance schedule on page . Remember that thisschedule is based on the assumption that your machine will be usedfor its designed purpose. Sustained high-load or high-temperatureoperation, or use in unusually wet or dusty conditions, will requiremore frequent service.

The emission control systems on your Honda engine were designed, built, and certified to conform with applicable emission regulations. We recommend the use of Honda Genuine parts whenever you havemaintenance done. These original-design replacement parts aremanufactured to the same standards as the original parts, so you canbe confident of their performance. The use of replacement parts thatare not of the original design and quality may impair the effectivenessof your emission control system.

A manufacturer of an aftermarket part assumes the responsibility thatthe part will not adversely affect emission performance. Themanufacturer or rebuilder of the part must certify that use of the partwill not result in a failure of the engine to comply with emissionregulations.

STORAGE

Cleaning

Fuel

Storage Preparation

Proper storage preparation is essential for keeping your generatortrouble-free and looking good. The following steps will help to keeprust and corrosion from impairing your generator’s function andappearance, and will make the engine easier to start when you use thegenerator again.

Wipe the generator with a moist cloth. After the generator has dried, touch up any damaged paint, and coat other areas that may rust with alight film of oil.

Depending on the region where you operate your equipment, fuelformulations may deteriorate and oxidize rapidly. Fuel deteriorationand oxidation can occur in as little as 30 days and may cause damageto the carburetor and/or fuel system. Please check with your servicingdealer for local storage recommendations.

Gasoline will oxidize and deteriorate in storage. Old gasoline willcause hard starting, and it leaves gum deposits that clog the fuelsystem. If the gasoline in your generator deteriorates during storage, you may need to have the carburetor and other fuel systemcomponents serviced or replaced. The length of time that gasoline can be left in your fuel tank andcarburetor without causing functional problems will vary with suchfactors as gasoline blend, your storage temperatures, and whether thefuel tank is partially or completely filled. The air in a partially filled fueltank promotes fuel deterioration. Very warm storage temperaturesaccelerate fuel deterioration. Fuel deterioration problems may occurwithin a few months, or even less if the gasoline was not fresh whenyou filled the fuel tank.

The does not cover fuel system damage orengine performance problems resulting from neglected storagepreparation. You can extend fuel storage life by adding a gasoline stabilizer that isformulated for that purpose, or you can avoid fuel deteriorationproblems by draining the carburetor, sediment cup (if applicable) and/or fuel tank.

Storage Precautions

Removal From Storage

If your generator will be stored with gasoline in the fuel tank andcarburetor, it is important to reduce the hazard of gasoline vaporignition.

Do not use sheet plastic as a dust cover. A nonporous cover will trapmoisture around the generator, promoting rust and corrosion.

With the engine and exhaust system cool, cover the generator to keepout dust. A hot engine and exhaust system can ignite or melt somematerials.

Place the generator on a level surface. Tilting can cause fuel or oilleakage.

Unless all fuel has been drained from the fuel tank, leave the fuel valvein the OFF position to reduce the possibility of leakage.

If possible, avoid storage areas with high humidity, because thatpromotes rust and corrosion.

Also avoid any area with a spark-producing electric motor, or wherepower tools are operated.

Select a well ventilated storage area away from any appliance thatoperates with a flame, such as a furnace, water heater, or clothes dryer.

If the fuel was drained during storage preparation, fill the tank withfresh gasoline. If you keep a container of gasoline for refueling, besure that it contains only fresh gasoline. Gasoline oxidizes anddeteriorates over time, causing hard starting.

If the cylinder was coated with oil during storage preparation, theengine may smoke briefly at startup. This is normal.

Check your generator as described in the PRE-OPERATION CHECKchapter of this manual (see page ).27

TRANSPORTING

TRANSPORTING

If the generator has been used, allow it cool for at least 15 minutesbefore loading the generator on the transport vehicle. A hot engineand exhaust system can burn you and can ignite some material.
