What is DNA?Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms and some viruses.

What is DDNA?DDNA contains the generic instructions and metadata that could be used in the development andfunctioning of Products, Designs and ArtWorks.

Structure of DDNADDNA is composed of spirits, spirits arecomposed of nodes, nodes are composed ofbits of information.

Coding the DDNAPseudo-DDNA (PDDNA)(Natural Language Expression)
Generative Pseudo-DDNA (GPDDNA)(natural language, with “Randomly Picked” or “Generated” values)
Sampled-DDNA (SDDNA)(physically demonstrated, mix media information)
Heuristic-DDNA(coded in XML Language, array of metadata)
Generative-DDNA(heuristic, with “Randomly Picked” or “Generated” values)

Simple Generated WorkDesigners’ Avatar “Dort”; created A series of “generated” abstract expressionist drawings by Onur Mustak Cobanli, seeded by words.

DDNA ConstructionWe need to define basic details such as shape, color etc. Here from the silhouettes of leaf, we define shape. From nature, we define possible colors.
![Page 11: Generative Design Using Design DNA](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5681682d550346895dddc854/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
DDNA ConstructionFurther, we study the technology and material so that we identify the restrictions, and possibilities that we can use in creation of a product.

DDNA ConstructionWe also define the functional focus, here fore example is “Outdoor Furniture”.
We have finished the DDNA Construction, but before we can have a generative design, we need to identify and define few more things:
1. What is the Algorithm to follow? ( A Pseudo Algorithm )2. Who/What runs the Algorithm? ( A designer )3. Desired typologies: Bench, Chair, Table, Chaise-Lounge etc.
![Page 14: Generative Design Using Design DNA](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5681682d550346895dddc854/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Process AlgorithmFor generating newdesigns from Scratch.
![Page 15: Generative Design Using Design DNA](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5681682d550346895dddc854/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Running the DDNAWe run the algorithm over and over again, and pick the “working” designs, which will serve as our product family.
![Page 16: Generative Design Using Design DNA](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5681682d550346895dddc854/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Tuning up the DDNASometimes it might be difficult to come up with a working product family, and in such case we need to play with the number of restrictions / free variables in our design.
![Page 17: Generative Design Using Design DNA](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5681682d550346895dddc854/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
DDNA ExtractionWe need to extract the DDNA from this design, and use it to design.
![Page 18: Generative Design Using Design DNA](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062302/5681682d550346895dddc854/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Process Algorithm for generating new designs from existing products or designs.

Product Family GenerationStarting with an initial design, we have extracted the DDNA and created a product family by Pseudo-Generative Approaches.
