A large majority of retirees are concerned with:• Outliving their money• Not having a strategy for today’s uncertain financial markets• Taking too much risk with their hard earned assets The question isn’t will the stock market pull back, it’s when will the stock market pull back. Most people are poorly served by simplistic investment strategies that are prone to volatility and possible interruptions to income generation. Experience and rigorous research suggests that the same strategies used by large institutions can be replicated successfully for individu-als seeking to balance growth and risk in uncertain markets. It is not necessary anymore to rely on luck or chase unrealistic performance expectations; instead, rely on a disciplined strategy that is designed for a dramatically different economic and financial world. Investment methodology should be based on the models used by major educational institutions and

other sophisticated institutional in-vestors who are seeking to increase performance while reducing the effects of turbulent markets. No one can successfully predict markets or completely avoid risk; instead, use complex models, advanced risk management tech-niques, and nontraditional investing principles to pursue success in all market environments.

Your approach to retirement plan-ning is anchored on four pillars that cover your entire financial picture:

1) Investment strategies that re-duce risk and create stable income.2) Tax minimization and efficient income distribution strategies.3) Asset protection and personal risk reduction.4) Estate and legacy planning to pass your hard-earned wealth to future generations.

Leave no question unasked and no financial issue unexplored when developing strategies for a comfort-able future.

According to the Centers for Dis-ease Control and Prevention, eye diseases related to aging are the primary cause of vision impairment in the United States. Many people consider vision loss a natural side ef-fect of aging, but there are ways men and women can protect their vision and reduce their risk of vision loss as they age.• Quit smoking. According to the National Eye Institute, smoking doubles a person’s risk for age-relat-ed macular degeneration, or AMD. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in men and women over the age of 50. It causes damage to the macula, which is the part of the eye needed for sharp, central vision. If the macula is damaged, vision may be blurry, distorted or dark.• Protect eyes from ultraviolet light. The American Optometric Associa-tion notes that UV-A and UV-B radia-tion can have adverse effects on a person’s vision. A short-term effect of excessive expo-

sure to UV radiation is photokeratitis, a painful condition that can lead to red eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and excessive tearing. Long-term ef-fects of such exposure include a high-er risk of developing cataracts and damage to the retina, which is the part of the eye used for seeing. When spending time outdoors, always wear sunglasses that provide protection against UV-A and UV-B rays.• Maintain a healthy blood pres-sure. High blood pressure, often referred to as HBP or hypertension, can contribute to vision loss as a person ages. The American Heart Association notes that HBP can strain blood vessels in the eyes, causing them to narrow or bleed. HBP also can cause the optic nerve to swell, compromising a person’s vision as a result. Eye damage that results from HBP is cumulative, which means the

longer it goes untreated, the more likely the damage to the

eye will be permanent. Men and women can

maintain a healthy blood pressure by eating right, exercising regularly and sustaining a healthy weight.• Take breaks from work. Com-puter vision syndrome, or CVS, is a legitimate condition that can develop when a person spends ample time staring at a computer screen. Adults and kids alike are susceptible to CVS, which can cause symptoms such

as blurred vision, double vision, eye irritation, and headaches. One way to reduce risk of developing CVS is to take frequent breaks from staring at the screen. A handful of 20-second breaks over the course of an hour can help prevent CVS. In addition, change lighting in the room where you work so you can reduce glare on the computer screen.

Baby Boomers make up the largest generation of Americans born in Unit-ed States history. Boomers include any-one born between the years 1946 and 1964, as the number of births began to rise as World War II veterans returned home from battle. The greatest number of Baby Boomers were born in 1957, when numbers peaked at 4,300,000. That equates to roughly 8 children born per minute throughout the year. By 2019, the last of the Baby Boomers, or those born in 1964, will be eligible for many senior benefits offered to people age 55 and up. Ten years later, most will be eligible for retirement.

CONFUSED BY MEDICARE? Are you like the millions of other chronologically gifted citizens that are confused by all of the changes going on with Medicare? Do your friends try to give you advice on what they have done to plan for their Medicare health plan and pre-scription drug coverage? Or do you just go through the stacks of solici-tations that come each September and October telling you that their plan is the best? A much simpler way to deal with Medicare annually is to use the ser-vices of a professional agency that has a staff of experts in Medicare planning. All at no charge to you. Many seniors think that Medicare planning is “set it and forget it.” For the first 40 years of Medicare that was basically correct. Then in 2004, everything changed with the Medicare Modernization Act. Now Medicare includes the option of prescription drug coverage. A research foundation found that over $600 per year is wasted by each senior who does not check on their Part D plan and shop for better options. Medicare found that 87 percent of seniors do not do this simple exercise. That leads to a lot of wasted money.

Prescription drug plans need to be simply reviewed each year to make sure that the formulary (list of cov-ered drugs) has not dropped your drug. But even more important – will the cost of your drugs or plan premiums increase dramatically come January 1? The wrong ques-tion is “are my drugs covered?” The right question is “are they cov-ered and at what total cost?” Part C of Medicare, called Medi-care Advantage, also came out in 2004. These very popular plans now cover over 17 million seniors. But there are significant differences between plans, even if the plans come from the same insurance company! Medicare Advantage plans often have provider networks that change, medical coverage that changes and premiums that change. A simple review of all of the options available to you can save you potentially thousands of dollars each year. And also save you major headaches in provider choices and flexibility. Plus some plans included free extra benefits like vision, dental and gym access. You can do some of the research for Medigap plans, Part D and

Medicare Advantage plans on the government website www.Medi-care.gov. However, you often will easily miss nuances and important plan differences, as the summaries there are very basic. All available plans can be viewed on this web-site. It truly is best to use a combina-tion of your own research and the assistance of a professional, licensed agent for Medicare plans.

The agent does not work for Medi-care, but serves and protects you. That way you and the agent can drill down on the plan differences and really become fully aware of what is being offered.Remember that you need to review your Medicare planning annually. The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is October 15 to December 7. The plans are available to the public on October 1.

TRAVEL BENEFITS FOR THOSE AGES 50 AND UP One of the best things about aging is being able to enjoy the fruits of your labor without as many obligations as you might have had when you were a younger adult. For example, many men and women have a lot more freedom to travel once they turn 50. Many of today’s older adults have a wealth of discretionary time, and those who focused on retirement planning from an early age have the money to fund a recreational lifestyle. Travel companies and other businesses understand that Baby Boomers and other seniors are valuable customers and are rolling out the red carpet with a bevy of discounts and perks. Many travel companies have dis-counts or other perks available to men and women over 50. All con-

sumers need to do is inquire about such benefits. When in doubt, log on to the company’s website or give their customer service depart-ment a call. Here are some other ways to secure deals on travel and other services.• Do some networking. Fellow seniors who log in to chat rooms or who are members of social clubs may have the inside scoop on age-based travel deals. Learn the ropes from others who have been there before you and take notes on which companies offer the best deals.• Read the fine print. Understand the details of senior discounts and compare them to other promo-tions offered to anyone, regardless of age. You may be able to get a

better deal or combine offers if you’re not locked into a senior plan. Also, check the dates when deals are valid to ensure you can travel when you want to.• Always carry proof of age. Whether it is a driver’s license, AARP card, passport, or birth

certificate, carry proof of your age at all times. You do not want to miss out on a discount because you cannot verify you are 50 or older. Though being mis-taken as younger could be a boost to your ego, it will not benefit your bottom line.• Explore airline perks. Men and women 55 and older may be eli-gible for “golden-agers” discounts at major airlines. Such deals are not typically advertised, so you may need to speak with an airline representative to secure the dis-count. Seniors also can request special services, such as baggage assistance, priority seating and a ride to the gate, at the airport.• Try negotiating with vendors. If you cannot find a senior discount, consider negotiating with vendors for deals. Local hotels or busi-nesses may prove more flexible than national

chains. It never hurts to ask for a senior discount.• Embrace flexibility in schedul-ing. Unlike students or business travelers, seniors tend to have freedom with regard to the days of the week when they can travel. You have the flexibility to go and come as you please without having to coordinate with vacation time or school breaks. Use this to your ad-vantage and travel during off-peak times when crowds will be small and rates may be lower. Don’t feel down if you’re ap-proaching another milestone birthday. Entering into your golden years gives you access to a variety of perks and discounts that can save you time and money on

travel.

EATING HEALTHY AFTER 50

GENERATIONS EXPO • Sunday, May 31, 2015

As people age, their dietary needs begin to change. Foods that were once staples of your diet as a youth may be restricted once you hit a certain age, while other foods you may have always avoided may now be necessary to fuel and support a healthy body. Eating healthy foods and exercising may not be enough to sustain health, as hormonal changes and other health effects as a person reaches age 50 can have a profound impact on his or her nutritional requirements. The following are a few things men and women over 50 may want to consider as they look to eat a healthy diet for years to come.

VITAMIN DBoth men and women age 50 and up have a reduced ability to produce vitamin D through exposure to the sun. Extra vitamin D will be needed from foods and supplements. Everyone over the age of 50 should take a daily vitamin D supplement of 400 IU (10 µg), according to Canada’s Food Guide. Without adequate vitamin D, bone strength and health can deteriorate because

vitamin D promotes calcium absorption. Vitamin D also has other roles, including helping neuromuscular and immune function and reducing inflammation.

FRIENDLY FATSPeople over age 50 should increase their intake of unsaturated fats and reduce consumption of saturated fats. Nutrient-rich unsaturated fats can guard against heart conditions, protect against stroke, keep skin supple, and even help men and women maintain good neurological health. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in nuts, olives, seeds, and fatty fishes.

INCREASE PROTEINAccording to Christine Gerb-stadt, MD, RD, a spokes-person for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as they age, men and women need more protein in their diets to maintain their muscle mass. The amount of protein needed at a younger age no longer may be adequate. Look for lean sources of protein from fish and poultry.

Beans are also a low-fat source of protein

that can help fulfill daily protein

requirements.

MORE FIBEREating more fiber can help with digestive and intestinal problems, such as constipa-tion. Constipation can occur when fiber intake is not enough, coupled with a more sedentary lifestyle. The best way to get fiber is through diet. Leave the skins on fruit and vegetables and choose whole fruits over juices. Whole-grain breads and cereals also are good sources of fiber. Dry beans and lentils can add a fiber boost. Always increase fiber slowly to determine your tolerance.

FEWER CALORIESThe National Institute on Ag-ing says women over the age of 50 need between 1,600 and 2,000 calories, depend-ing on how physically active they are. Men need between 2,000 and 2,400 calories per day. With each passing year there is a decrease in the energy required to maintain body weight, so caloric intake should be adjusted accordingly.

MORE WATERAs a person ages, his or her body may not signal it is thirsty as well as it once did, so it’s possible that you may not recognize when you are

thirsty or dehydrated. The Mayo Clinic recommends around nine

to 10 cups of beverages per day

to remain hydrated.

SENIOR LIVING OPTIONS ABOUND

Senior living communities often present an affordable and com-fortable option for adults over the age of 55. Filled with like-minded and similarly aged residents, these communities can be the right fit for individuals no longer interested in or capable of taking care of a larger home. Senior communities are lo-cated all across the country. Finding one that meets your needs takes only a little research. Although they are often moder-ately priced and offer a variety of amenities, senior living communities sometimes suffer from a bad reputa-tion. But such communities are not the “old age homes” that some people purport them to be. Rather, they’re entire living neighborhoods that cater to the needs of an active resident base. These communities can range from independent living private homes or condos to man-aged care facilities. Residents may be able to enjoy organized outings,

recreation, shopping, and socializa-tion without having to venture far from property grounds. Some com-munities offer food services or an on-site restaurant. Fifty-five and older communi-ties offer conveniences that many find irresistible. They’re frequently located close to shopping, dining and healthcare providers. Taxes, insurance, utilities, and mainte-nance expenses may be covered in one fee. Clubhouses, golf courses, lakes, card rooms, and many other offerings are designed to appeal to residents of many ages. Now that baby boomers have reached the age where retirement communities are a consideration, there has been an influx of interest. Those considering a move to one of these communities should research some information before purchasing a unit.• Determine the fees associated with a community. Can Medicaid or

long-term care insurance pay for all or a portion of the fees? Which types of services does the monthly fee cover?• Who is eligible to live in the com-munity? Some restrict all residents to a particular age, while others do not. Rules may be in effect that include an age cut-off limit.• Investigate the types of residents and who would be your immedi-ate neighbors. What percentage of people live in the community all year long, and how many are part-time residents?• Look into the particular home owner’s association rules. Bylaws may indicate that the property must be kept in a certain manner. You may not be able to paint exterior items a certain color, nor put up fencing or set up outdoor patio furni-ture. Get the details before you sign anything.• Is this the type of community where you can age in place? Mean-

ing, are there separate accommoda-tions if you eventually need assisted living care? Some communities offer living options that vary depending on residents’ ages.• Be sure there are activities or amenities that appeal to you. You eventually want to find your niche and get together with a group of friends who share the same inter-ests.• You may want to find a commu-nity close to your children or other relatives. This way you will not have to travel far to visit others, and they will be able to visit you easily in return.• Some communities are gated, which can increase feelings of safety. If this is a priority, look for housing under security.

Following these guidelines can mean discovering a community where anyone can feel comfortable for years to come.
